  1. What a difference 1 month makes, eh? I say most probably not. I don't think his numbers (especially his lack of plate discipline) lend themselves to putting up MVP-caliber numbers on offense any time soon. BUT, a conversation we might be having a few years from now: How much should defense be factored into MVP consideration? I think most people would argue it's very important, yet most MVP winners in the past couple decades are all about offensive numbers. For example, Miguel Cabrera should not have won over Trout in 2012 and 2013, in my opinion. Hopefully the surge of WAR, other advanced statistics, and defensive metrics, will favor amazing defensive players like Buxton in MVP discussions in the future.
  2. I was amused the other day that Colon promised his mom that he would pitch until he's 45.
  3. On a related note, something I've been wondering for a while: It's always looked to me that Kennys uses a bat that's too short for a man of his size. Maybe he's just so big that the bat looks small? Does anyone happen to know what bat length he uses? I always think in contrast the huge bat Alfonso Soriano used to use. Small guy, but generated a lot of power and didn't need to bend over to reach low pitches (always seems to me like Kennys is hunching over to swing at pitches).
  4. Some have compared Vargas to the David Ortiz situation of past, given the similar body size, fielding difficulties, and supposed mis-handling of playing time, but simply, David Ortiz was a .950 OPS hitter in AA/AAA, and Vargas is around .800. Vargas has not proved himself in the minors or majors to have an adequate bat for a 1B/DH. One might argue that they would take an .800 OPS 1B over Joe Mauer, but Mauer's recent OPS in the mid-.700's with Gold Glove caliber defense at first, I'd take Joe over Kennys. (and that's not even considering the huge contract, face of the franchise, veteran seniority, etc).
  5. People have been asking for this for a while, great move!
  6. Putting Bartolo at #9 is bold. I'd put Sano above Dozier because I feel he and Ervin Santana are the biggest reasons the Twins played well early in the season and are in playoff contention at all now. But that's nitpicking. Also, as impressive as Rosario has been lately, isn't it sad that our #1 in the power ranking is only ranked "11th among qualified left fielders" for wRC+?
  7. Ah I forgot about that! I'm not accustomed to the 40-man only having 38 on it. Usually 39 or 40.
  8. I'd say: Garver Turley Palka/Vargas Probably Granite Vielma only if injury to infield. Nick Gordon is in AA and not on 40-man, so not happening. Gonsalves I would argue against bringing up b/c he's not on the 40-man roster. Who to DFA? Recker? And especially if Perkins comes off the 60-day DL at some point this season. They don't have room to add both. Unless Chargois goes to the 60-day DL?
  9. If the Front Office expects to use current minor leaguers to improve the bullpen next year, then they need to actually use some at the MLB level this year. The only one I've seen a sufficient amount is Hildenberger (future 8th-inning or maybe closer if nobody else steps up, IMO). If the Twins stay in contention though, don't expect to see much of these young relievers in September. Then that would leave too big of a question mark going into next season. So, I see: ( a ) Twins stay in contention, don't utilize young relievers, need to shop FA market for relievers this winter (or waiver trade soon-ish). ( b ) Twins fall out of contention, trade Belisle, callup and use young relievers in leveraged situations. Young pitchers play well. Don't shop FA RP market much this winter. ( c ), Same as b, but young relievers perform poorly. Shop FA RP market more heavily this winter.
  10. Don't have time for a detailed matchup analysis, but I've noted that the Indians roster has generally sucked against Colon (.713 OPS) and the Twins have rocked against Salazar (.971 OPS), and my magic 8-ball likes the Twins' odds: http://www.indra.com/8ball/animatedgifs/c16.gif
  11. Regarding Buxton's catch, can someone explain to me how it had an 86% hit probability, but a 65% catch percentage instead of ~14% (100-86=14)?
  12. Possibly Molitor did not want Enns starting today. Possibly Molitor was playing the splits on Manny Pina in a crucial situation: .347 this year against lefties, .259 this year against righties. Possibly Enns was on a low pitch limit we don't know about. Possibly Molitor knew Enns was a bit taxed after running way too hard for that infield hit. Thankfully the bullpen was fairly rested so they could manage the 6.2 innings!
  13. Enns supposedly has a deceptive release and the Brewers strike out a ton. I like Enns' chance tonight for a nice debut.
  14. "For the next Twins promotional giveaway, we are excited to announce that we will be giving away the leaked scripts of the next season of Game of Thrones to the first 10,000 fans"
  15. Someone should do a chart of keywords "Twins"/"Buy" and "Twins"/"Sell" on Twitter or TD the last month to see what the rollercoaster looks like. It'll be like the High Roller at ValleyFair... Up-down-up-down-up-down with a few small thrills in-between.
  16. Mientkiewicz Jake Mauer Gene Glynn? Chris Gimenez so we can get him off the 40-man roster but keep him in the MLB clubhouse?
  17. Ah yes. But , at this point, would you rather take Santiago over the alternatives? ERA ~ 8 since the beginning of May.
  18. 08August2017 Twins leadoff hitter hits Twins' first grand slam of the yearRed Wings leadoff hitter hits team's first grand slam since opening day
  19. This just in: I just realized Mejia already went on the DL. So, Gee likely to get a start or two, and we have a glut of decent AAA starters who can fill in as long reliever for Gee. Enns, Jorge (AA), and Turley would be the leading options as they're currently on the 40-man.
  20. Let's see if they can hold on until September 1. With the roster expansion, they have several decent bullpen arms (Baxendale, Rucinski, Wimmers, Melotakis) as well as AAA starters which can come out of the MLB bullpen, depending on who's put on the 40-man roster. Honestly if Gee can pitch decently, I'm not too concerned about our bullpen the rest of the year. I'm fairly concerned about our starting rotation. If Mejia goes on the DL, and Colon and Gibson stink it up, we're screwed.
  21. Several will uproar about the Twins unloading Garcia and Kintzler now that the Twins are 1.5 back in the Wild Card. I say: The Twins unloaded Garcia and Kintzler and are still only 1.5 back in the Wild Card; that's great! If we can stay in the thick of things and also have those extra pitching prospects for the future, then things worked out just dandy.
  22. I don't believe I've ever seen someone with a clean steal of home with the pitcher looking directly at and focusing on the runner, and pitching out of the stretch? Someone else correct me if I'm wrong? I don't think he could have made it cleanly. Even if he's half way down the line, a perfect sprint to home would be about 2-2.5 seconds, based on 28 feet/second sprint speed plus acceleration. A delivery to home out of the stretch takes about 1-1.5 seconds? Any decent throw and he'd be toast.
  23. That was a killer for the Twins last year too, at .239 w/RISP (well, and their pitching). They just need their pitching and hitting to line up for a little bit and extend this 2-game winning streak to get back near the top of the Wild card or division races.
  24. Wow Enns looks very, very similar to Gonsalves in that video.
  25. Sorry I'm jumping into this late, but I'd presume the Yankees regard Sonny Gray higher than Santana, especially given that Gray is 27, so they probably figure that they would never give any top prospects for Santana, because they could instead give their top prospects for Gray. If Santana was the only good SP on the market, then we'd be in a better spot.
