  1. I am 100% with you on that. June, if not sooner in some cases, is going to be very interesting from a personnel standpoint, probably on both the 40 man and active rosters. Most likely, we'll see how strongly they are committed to the future vs making a mistake of letting go of pieces that aren't performing or aren't part of our future.
  2. If I used the word acceptable instead of wise, would it be fair or true? I am not sure if you are watching these guys postpone decisions that really should have been made already. My fear is the motivation is that they are hoping for circumstances to arise to make the decision easier. Rip the bandaid off already. They are afraid they will be ripped for their decision. Reality check, they are going to get ripped, period.
  3. The context of the article is a little problematic. If you change the context to, you are paying a guy $23M for 49 RBI's, then Jack's comments resonate well. In my opinion, you can talk all day about what what you would like Mauer to do, but the reality is the what the Twins do is far more important. For whatever reason, our leadership feels it is wise to play a guy based on what you need rather than what they are capable of. Mauer is not capable of 100 RBI any more, Buxton has not proven himself in the majors, and there are several other examples of this mentality. Don't put Mauer in the 4 hole. Give other batters, the right ones, chances against lefties. Keep Buxton at the bottom of the order and for god sakes make Perkins prove himself at triple A before you bring him back. Please stop being hopeful and start being more pragmatic.
  4. I read this piece and was quite excited to do so as I am greatly interested in understanding the concept of pitch framing. http://www.twinkietown.com/2017/4/9/15222762/pitch-framing-jason-castro-salvador-perez-best-catchers-minnesota-twins-kansas-city-royals-mlb As I started reading the article I thought it was going to be amazing, the perspectives on Perez were going to really translate into strikes for the Twins. But, I am very disappointed. Granted, Perez is not a "quiet" receiver. However the writer compared Perez's bottom of the strike zone to the top of Castro's. If you compare the bottom of both catcher's strike plot you see a host of green diamonds. The ump was not giving strikes at very bottom edge of the strike zone, but he was at the top for both catchers/pitchers. My conclusion, not sure if I am right or wrong, is that Rob Drake (the ump) had a very consistent strike zone for both teams and, Castro is a more quiet receiver than Perez, but I am not sure if he added many strikes. Can some help me understand this better?
  5. I didn't think much of the batting order but I did appreciate the gift the Royals' pitching staff graced us with. I wonder how many times teams have walked in 3 runs in one inning. What is Molitor going to do? Bring in Escobar, Santana or Gimenez on Opening Day? Early in spring training they talked about protecting Mauer against tough lefties. So opening day they throw him in clean up, because they have no options That should have been Park in the 4 slot, but he is not available right now. I suspect we have very little flexibility and you won't see much of Santana or Gimenez until somebody needs a day off. Escobar may get more chances to give Sano a day off in the field and move him to DH. I can't wait until they figure out the rotation. I expect to see Duffy starting by May.
  6. Obviously we have the flexibility to accommodate our current situation injuries and development. I really would like to understand the end game. It seems we are postponing decisions for something?? Hughes health and ability? The emergence of Berrios, Chargois, Wimmers, Tepesch, Park or Vargas?? I think that if you had a strategy for this team these decision would be clearer. I don't see how Santana fits into the future in any scenario. Probably the same could be said for others.
  7. 2-7, 3-6 after the first 9, keeps the door open for a 70 win season. I think it is an extremely remote possibility of going 0-9 again butIf this young group gets down on themselves early, we are in for another 100 loss season.
  8. Well, I guess I can buy that perspective... but how long of a leash do you give him? 5 outings, 10? No doubt the downside risk here is why we are carrying 13 pitchers. I really don't like the notion that because you are paying him a lot, you have to play him. If he is not ready, get him ready first. Then play him. I don't think anyone has high hopes for this optimism to turn into reality. Can this guy even create some value in a relief role?
  9. I really don't know what his value is. Essentially he is a body that can play (poorly) an number of positions. So in case some body get's hurt we are covered for one, maybe two games. After that you have a 40 man roster to fill those gaps. Extremely low value in my opinion. That should be Park's spot. On the 13 pitchers, Santiago is probably behind schedule and Hughes is a question mark. The bullpen could see extensive use in 40% of their outings. I am uncomfortable with a short bench, but I understand it.
  10. There is a lesson here. One mistake or false hood can derail your entire message, which might be correct. In the context of an outside-in perspective of the Twins, it is generally correct. Essentially they are fielding the same team as last year maybe trading a little defense and pitch-framing for a little offense. Falvey is banking on better luck and better health and improvement in his young players to win at least 11 more games this year. Some how he believes the optics of a 70 win season and the prospects of adding more players in the next off-season is improvement. To this fan it doesn't work that way. 100 losses is possible, but I really hope they don't start the season 0-9 again where the entire team realizes how bad they are and ensure it will happen! BTW, The Twins front office get's zero credit for any improvement of wins, Terry Ryan's 2016 team could have achieved the same with a change in luck. Off Season/Spring Training GRADE, D+!
  11. I would really like the Twins to establish a culture that includes a "meritocracy". Although I agree that Sano is going to be one of your better players is lack of commitment and effort needs to be confronted directly. As a result of the awful spring training result, he should start the season batting 7,8 or 9. He is letting the team down. The editorial shots that come from the front office are weak and inappropriate. WHEN, Sano hits better then move him up. Park should bat 4 until Sano beats him out.
  12. Meeting the projection for this team is probably a big challenge. I guess we would have to take it but I am not sure that makes us competitive, even in a weak Central Division. Two years ago we over-achieved. Last year we under-achieved. I guess it would be nice to know if we are on the right path with the new management more than anything else. That won't be clear until the middle (or end) of next season.
  13. The mindset behind the pitching staff seems to be tied a little too much to the decision making from the past. I want to believe that this organization is future minded and we will see more younger players crack the rotation. Obviously if guys like Hughes, Breslow, Tonkin and Perkins can pitch well, great. If they struggle, move on. We need to find out about pitchers like Berrios, Haley, Mejia and Duffy.
  14. I like what you are saying here. To me the core of our success was based on good fundamentals. I understand the game has changed, but I prefer to watch a good fielding team. Also, there is a good chance our pitching staff will pitch a shade better knowing they have a good defense behind them. It would also help to know they are going to get a bunch of runs behind them, but I don't think that can happen this year.
  15. I am taking the under.
  16. Maybe Vielma is not ready and this makes sense? It seems like window dressing to me.
  17. If the first 4 things happen, I would consider that progress and be satisfied. I would like to add to my list that Sano improves on defense and Polanco handles short reasonable well. IF, all of that happens and we still don't win 70 games, I will still be happy.
  18. Good article and there is nothing wrong with Falvey's approach to the team as long as you are not a season ticket holder. With the exception of one outlier year, the Twins have not been relevant since 2010. With the low benchmark of 59 wins, it should be easy for him to show season on season improvement. If the ownership gives him 3-4 years to rebuild, why not take it. Lower risk for him and his new team. Unfortunately for the fan base the franchise will have been on a 10 year hiatus by the time we are a factor again. OUCH!
  19. Yeah, I should be more up-beat, Thanks for the nudge. I was hoping for more in the off season and was letting off a little steam. My point had nothing to do with Suzuki or Plouffe but the fact that we did so little in the off-season that we didn't even replace the 100 RBI that they produced. Also, our prospects were on the verge of bust status, according to the vibe I read following them. Were it not for a strong finish by Buxton and some and an improved off-season workout program by Sano, the dialogue would be different. If Sano's glove is not better he will be a DH soon.
  20. I appreciate the call for an optimistic chord, but the reality is that with the start of the spring training being a couple of weeks away, the stark reality is that the new management has not had a successful off-season. There are very few high points on which to have hope. Almost a hundred RBI between Plouffe and Suzuki probably won't be fully replaced. Reduced run production and below average pitching is not the recipe on which I was hoping to start the season. I am sure the new management is better than the old management but at this point nobody can tell if it is even a reasonable improvement. At least the timberwolves have potential stars. I can't wait until this fall! Go Vikes!
  21. Not much of a rebuttal to Mr. Froemming's article. Simple math tells us the Twins should have only lost 96 games in 2016? Things can't go that bad again? Personnel changes should net out and our young guys will get better. Man am I excited for this season. #wemaynotlose100games.
