    Polanco was supposed to sit today before Marwin came down with a toe injury.

    Cleveland now 7 games back. They play the Royals on Wednesday. A's have a great record against above .500 teams this year and they're now just 7 back of Houston. A win tonight would really right the ship. Hope Rocco has a motivational speech in his bag of tricks, might come in handy. Nice to see the bats heat up yesterday, but pitching has really not been what it once was earlier in the year. Twins need help, soon. The more bad outings the starters have, the higher the price gets for pitchers. Trade talk will be the significant focus of this board until the end of the month. How soon will the Twins add talent? Here's a look back to last year's trade dates: July 27: Escobar for Duran, De la Trinidad, & Maciel July 30: Lynn for Tyler Austin & Rojo July 30: Duke for Chase De Jong & Costello July 31: Dozier for Forsythe, Smelztzer & Raley It will be nice to be on the other side of the fence this year. Just hoping our front office makes some deals before July 27!

    The White Sox GM has all but confirmed the Sox aren't going to make any additions at the deadline. They're almost done with their rebuild and aren't going to tear anything down. Look for the A's and Rangers to go hard at the WC though - two teams the Twins face very soon.

    For as human as the Twins have looked this June, the Indians have only gained 1.5 games in the standings since June 1st. The Tribe is playing better and with Kluber and a few other starters on the mend, I don't think they're going away. That said, they might not be making a hard charge, either. Consecutive 13-0 losses at Baltimore must have felt like a gut punch, especially when the Twins were treading water. They lost their weekend series against an inferior opponent, just like Minnesota. Miguel Sano put the ball in play and didn't strike out. Cautiously optimistic he's working out of that hole. Buxton had a double (great play by the Sox reliever to nab him at 3rd). And a great catch, glad he's back! Gonzalez is back and working off the rust. Cruz is on absolute fire. Gonna be a tough series in Oakland. The A's have a very good record against teams over .500 and they have been playing great ball, working themselves into the WC picture. They have a lot to play for right now.

    There have been some great articles about all of these targets - thanks TD for putting these together! Seriously where else could you find this kind of comprehensive covereage? Free? Anyway, out of all of these options, Kennedy is definitely not my favorite. Guy's been around since the Carter administration, it seems. Always reminded me of a Kevin Correia for whatever reason. Just seems that with so many other options, Kennedy should definitely be Plan C or Plan D (if other deals don't work out or the cost is too high). I wouldn't mind if he showed up in a Twins uniform, but I hope he's not the headliner of the summer. I see others here think differently and that's cool.

    For those that don't want to include Lewis or Kiriloff - here's your third choice: Yankees win the ALDS matchup 3 games to 1. It sucks to lose guys we've hoped to see in a Twins uniform but maybe their best contribution they can make would be as trade pieces. What if the Twins would have traded Sano for Max Scherzer a few years back? Remember that no prospects are sure things, no matter how high they're ranked.

    Right, grounding into a double play or lining into a double play is worse. But we can't assume a double play, as the old saying goes. Point to you though, you got me. So did you understand my point? Striking out isn't "just like any other out". Striking out can be bad. Striking out is worse than outs which move runners over or get runners home.

    A sacrifice fly is much better way to make an out than striking out.

    When the bases are loaded with 1 out, a strikeout is the worst out. When there's a man on 3rd with 1 out, a strikeout is worse than most other outs. I can go on and on. Strikeouts are indeed worse than other outs, in many cases. You have to take into account that the Twins were cruising WITHOUT Sano this year. The Twins also will have other options at 3rd: Gonzalez, Astudillo, Adrianza and even Arraez. This is not a season where the Twins can just let a guy go and figure things out for a season while we rebuild. This is a team that needs to win the division and can realistically compete for a WS title. Sano is a beloved player by many of us and we all want him to succeed. But we can't all just sit around and be Pollyannas about everything just because he's wearing a Twins jersey. He's got issues and striking out 40% of the time shows it.

    Amazing seasons for both Polanco and Kepler - right after the Twins signed them both to long-term deals. Fantastic both for the players and for the franchise, can't understate how much those contracts help this team. Jorge deserves the nod, glad he got it. How on earth did Lamonte Wade Jr. not get an at-bat this game. It's 18 innings and the team has scored 2 runs...what could you lose by putting him in? Maybe he'd make contact or drill one to the gap, seems like he should have at least got a chance. Nice to see Perez right the ship! The last extra-inning game against the Red Sox had out boys burned out for a week. Let's hope they learned something from the first experience...I don't think they'll have as big of a letdown as they did last time. Who's being reinstated? Buxton? Adrianza? Gonzalez? Corresponding moves? Is the Rochester Bullpen Shuttle leaving the station? Here's hoping we hear something from the Twins on activations and moves soon.

    Honeymoon's over, dude. We've been hearing this for the past 5 years. Trevor May will be turning 30 years old before the season ends. He's got a career 4.79 ERA in over 250 innings pitched. What you see is what he is. There's no more time to develop. He is a average-to-fringe bullpen guy who, when he's "feeling it", can strike out anyone in baseball. He is also going to give up runs, period. We all like the guy but it's time to stop pretending he's going to change.

    Elias Sports Bureau has a stat called "Productive Outs" - basically shows when batters succeed when they have an opportunity to make a productive out. Schoop's 9.5% rate is the lowest on the team - Sano's the next lowest at 14.3%. Schoop has been up in 21 such situations and has only made a productive out twice. Bunting or not last night, we shouldn't be surprised he struck out on 3 pitches in that situation. Schoop's found his way down to the bottom of the order for a reason. I think taking cheap shots at Rocco for Schoop's ineptitude is passing the buck. He's a decent defender and he'll suffice, but I've been souring on Schoop for a while now and that bat AB last night is on him. Great to see Cruz come through! What an addition he's been. Odorizzi's shaky, not worried yet. May once again shows why he doesn't belong in close games. Rogers was money once again! Rosario had been on absolute fire and his absence will hurt. Hope he gets well soon.

    I think the Twins are so deep that they're pretty insulated - at least on offense - from letting the injury bug really bite them. Good article.

    Indians melt down in the 9th and lose, Twins cruise. Garver and Schoop go deep, Eddie gets 4 hits, Astudillo goes 3-for-4 and has a great defensive play. Sano K's three times. He's got 53 strikeouts in 109 ABs this year. Kepler, gotta assume he sits tonight. Tough loss. Hope that guy gets an All-Star reserve pick, dude's on pace for 38 HR and 100 RBI.

    Yeah. And I worry that the few premium arms that are out there (ie: Smith, Iglesias, etc) will be available but only for a king's ransom. The bidding wars for those guys will be high. The real winners at the trade deadline will be the Giants and Reds, no question. Remember when the Twins traded Fernando Abad a couple years ago? He was a so-so middle relief guy who was pitching with an ERA in the mid 2's. Not a flashy name. Twins got Pat Light for him, BTW. I think that's the type of guys we'll see come over here. Names that aren't on the top of the list, maybe just some more average guys without a big price tag. Frankly I'm not sure they'll be any improvement on what the Twins already have. Personally I think at this point with Perez absolutely dragging this team into the ditch, the Twins have to spend those high-level prospects on a starter. I just can't see them paying such a huge price for a BP arm.

    Got news for you Arraez fans, he's going to be the guy we send over for Bumgartner. It would have been nice if we could have hidden him in the minors, but he's played himself into a major trade piece. If we've seen it, GMs around the league have too. His value is as high as it ever might be. It's too bad because I'd much rather have Arraez at 2nd than Schoop at this point. I'm beginning to think his "sore leg" was more of a phantom injury to sit him down for a while. Same goes for Marwin and Adrianza - I think the Twins are just resting the vets right now with this big lead. Look for Cron to take a 10-day break with a sore shoulder in the next couple of weeks. The way things are going this might be the last rest they get.

    Completely agree. This article reminds me of all the Trevor May hype that seems to come along every spring. May, Duffey, Morin, Magill, etc - these are just "serviceable" guys. The only reason to like Duffey right now is that he's pitching like an average relief pitcher and not getting shelled. But let's not crown him the next Josh Hader just because he's put together a couple of scoreless outings. As one AL Scout recently said about the Twins bullpen: "They have got guys, just like everybody else has guys, just not consistent guys". When you're hungry and you've got no food in the house, all of a sudden that old can of refried beans in the back of the cupboard looks like a suitable meal. It's got some protein and if you're drunk enough it'll taste just fine with some stale tortilla chips and that half-empty bottle of cheeze whiz. Just be careful you don't get that meal confused with the Butterknife Steak at Murray's.

    I think it's best to keep this board politics-free, there are lots of places we can talk about Trump, Bernie, and Biden but I'd rather not see it here on TwinsDaily. I think we can all agree to that.

    Sano has actually 2 options remaining so he could be sent down. Problem is with Adrianza and Marwin Gonzales on the shelf, the Twins would have to bring up a guy on the 40-man roster who can play 3rd base. The only guy on the 40 who could even think about filling in would be Nick Gordon. Do you want to call up Nick Gordon to play 3rd base for a handful of games in his MLB debut? Actually I kinda would like that haha! But I am pretty sure the Twins would not. I'm super concerned about Sano just like everyone else. His homerun was absolutely the difference in last night's game but honestly he's looked absolutely lost. Although that K in the 9th inning featured 2 terrible strike calls against him...but I just don't see how you can play a guy going through a slump like this. Sano makes Joey Gallo look like Tony Gwynn. I'm way more concerned about Perez. It's pretty clear that his early season success was indeed a fluke and he's back to being that pitcher who pitched to the tune of a 6.62 ERA last year in Texas. The Twins can't trade him, and can't move him to the bullpen as he wouldn't help there. I checked and it appears that Perez isn't out of options, so I think the logical move would be to send him down as soon as the Twins trade for help. Bumgardner fill his shoes nicely.

    Taking out my crystal ball - this is what a playoff series with Boston would look like, except the Twins wouldn't be playing all 3 of these games at home. Twins couldn't get to any Boston starter the entire series when it mattered (and they missed Sale!), couldn't get hits when the pressure was on, struck out a TON and played like deer in the headlights. Stop trying to hit homers every time because it puts more pressure on the guy behind you after you strike out. Pitching wise, the poster above talking about walks was dead on. Make 'em swing the bat and tip your cap if they get a single, but do not walk these guys! Right now I think the Twins would lose any best-of-five series 3-1 if they played the Astros, Yankees, or Red Sox in the ALDS. Luckily we've got some time to make adjustments. Overall I enjoyed the series despite the offensive disappointment. I am glad to see the Twins cut their teeth against real competition. It's nice to have a fat 9-game lead while they take stock and get a feel for what moves they need to make. The latest round of injuries (Buxton, Adrianza, Marwin) is troubling. But to have La Tortuga and Arraez available is a luxury. Nice work at 2b by Astudillo last night, wow. Cave is trying too hard and that long, uppercut swing isn't going to get him anywhere. He's looked like an AAA guy this series unfortunately. Poppen is Mr. Double Play!

    Just sour grapes. The Sox lost the game by not capitalizing on opportunities (they had a lead in the 13th and also had a man on 3rd with no outs at some point in extras, I believe). For them to whine about Eddie's left foot touching the chalk on a bunt attempt is PATHETIC. That said, you can't blame 'em for being just super deflated losing that game. Sano. We all saw it, it was talked about extensively in the game thread. Yeah it's bad and I'm guessing management is starting to worry about whether or not this guy is a liability. I wish so bad he'd just get it together. Garver. As a poster earlier said, that just can't happen. The good news is that he's not broken and he'll be fine. He just made one mistake (a costly one) but that won't follow him to the plate the next time he plays. Nice job by the 'pen - but they did give up 12 hits in 10 innings of work. Out of 8 relievers, only Rogers didn't give up a hit. They were tightroping it - Red Sox are a great hitting team though. Glad they got it done!

    Makes me sick to see guys here piling on Polanco. Dude actually did his job - something most Twins hitters didn't do! A normal grounder to the right side by Cruz, a sac fly by Cruz - pretty much anything aside from a nubber to the mound and we're tied. Criticizing Polanco is like criticizing Berrios for giving up that 1 run. There are lots of hitters to blame for last night's loss, none of them are named Polanco. There are lots of games left, I know losing 2 in a row makes everyone grumpy but these things happen. The Twins coaches will have to start coaching and getting guys to make adjustments pretty soon but this team should be fine.

    I fear the league has figured out Perez's new bag of tricks. He's rapidly transformed back into the normal ineffective Martin Perez that Texas chose to let walk last year. I think we should all be happy he had that early season success, but right now he's back to being the 5th-ranked starter on this team. He's also performed poorly out of the bullpen, and nobody will want him in a trade, all of which leaves this team in a tough spot.. At this rate I can't see the Twins picking up his option at the end of the year.
