Game Score: Twins 9, Red Sox 6

Cheap shot, but it was low-hanging fruit. Of course, according to this logic, it's been a wet summer in Minneapolis because it rained yesterday.- 41 replies

Ober and Jax?!?! What about Shoemaker, Happ, Maeda, Pineda, Duffey, Robles, Rogers, Alcala, Barnes, Gant, Minaya, Colome, Dobnak, Law, Stashak and Thorpe!?!?!?!?! My Lord. Do you really think the pitching staff and their coaches have done a satisfactory job this year?- 41 replies

Speaking of Torkelson, the Tigers' 2020 first round pick out of college is apparently in AAA. Meanwhile, Aaron Sabato, the Twins' 2020 first round pick out of college just got promoted....to high A ball. Shows you there's a big difference between those top 5 spots in the draft and the bottom 5 spots. Maybe tanking the rest of the year would be just what the doctor ordered?

That Robles trade is looking pretty darn good, eh? Impressed with Ober again, he's doing what's asked of him and then some. Agree with the sentiment above that Colome is the worst closer in Twins history. They have to DFA this guy no matter how you slice it. I'd argue that if the Twins care about this guy's career, they should do the humane thing and cut him now before he gets any more opportunities to blow leads. I think it's time to take a good hard look at replacing Wes Anderson. How can you not, with every single pitcher regressing? Has the Sano homer landed yet? Donaldson, Polanco, Buxton, Arraez, Kirilloff....I think we have a competitive offense in 2022.- 41 replies

Game Score: Red Sox 11, Twins 9

I don't think the FO really thinks differently. I was more speaking to the "Twins Fan Universe", including many here, who seem to have unrealistic expectations for what Jax's future looks like in a Twins uniform. If he's all we got, sure let's run 'em out there to get lit up once a week. But hearing all of these excuses ("Gee whiz Jax is good but he got jobbed by the ump") is like telling yourself that Fido went to live on a farm when instead he actually got the needle after he bit the social worker's finger off. Telling ourselves comforting lies about non-competitive pitchers is just kicking the can down the road. -

Gotta hand it to Theilbar, blowing the game immediately after the team scratches, claws, and wills itself all the way back into the ballgame in the 8th inning. *muah! - that's a vintage glass of '21 Twins Bullpen. As for Jax and Barnes: can we stop with pretending these guys are going to be anything except organizational depth already? These aren't top prospects, and unlike Hollywood, this isn't the point in the movie where they start to dig deep, find the fire in their souls, and throw no-hitters. They're just doing what any reasonable person expects of them: getting hit around pretty hard most of the time, with the occasional palatable outing. Unfortunately every single one of this team's top prospects are injured, so if you're watching the Twins the rest of the year, this is what you're going to be getting from their pitching staff. A steady diet of low-ceiling rookies mixed in with some 35 year-old waiver pickups. We all deserve better as fans of this club. -

It looks to me like Rocco is always trying to get away with playing his least competitive lineup so that the team can win tomorrow. Got Charlie Barnes on the mound? Might as well throw in the towel and field the worst lineup possible. I dislike this part of Rocco's managing style. He also does it during in-game situations. Twins down by 2 runs in the 6th? Instead of bringing in a shut-down reliever, Rocco puts in the worst bullpen guy so the Twins can save Rogers for tomorrow. But then tomorrow, the Twins lose 9-3. Also getting sick of seeing the Twins run out all of these has-beens and never-will-bes in a lost season. Forget calling up any of our top prospects, let's just sign Ubaldo Jimenez, Jeff Samardjzia and Hector Santiago to start the rest of the season. Maybe we can grab Melky Cabrera and Matt Kemp to fill in those OF spots. Watching a wasted season is terrible. Watching a wasted season and getting zero of the team's top prospects any experience is another. Kiriloff would have been fun to watch but he's injured. Larnach fizzled out, but at least we got to see the guy try. Right now Nick Gordon is the most exciting call up on the field. Give us something to get excited about, please. -
A Heartfelt Apology to Jorge Polanco
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've never understood harsh Polanco criticism - year after year, there are people who write terrible things about this guy, when all he's done is mash for his whole career. "He can't hit, has no business switch hitting, has a terrible glove and arm".....blah blah blah. Like what the heck? This guy's our best, most consistent player and has been a rock in the lineup for years now. At the very least he's solid. At best, he's the team's star. We've all been traumatized by the rollercoaster careers of our young core. Buxton, Sano, Kepler, Garver - all of them have, at one point or another, gone into very lengthy tailspins that have led fans to doubt their ability and value. We're conditioned to believe that all Twins players have some sort of deep, dark weakness that will eventually be exposed. Polanco doesn't fit into that category. Neither does Luis Arraez. Keep those two guys healthy, get a full year of Buxton in the lineup and spend money on pitching and this team has a chance at getting back to respectability in 2022. And on that team Polanco should be batting at the top of the lineup where he belongs. -

Bases loaded, nobody out, and the Twins go groundout-strikeout-groundout to suffocate the rally. Seen that movie one too many times this year. Great start for Ober. Cleveland's offense isn't exactly Murderer's Row, but they are an MLB team with Jose Ramirez batting 3rd. Nice work kid. Let's keep the theme going and win the 4th straight series today before going to dreaded NYC. -

Game Score: Twins 5, Cleveland 4
bighat replied to Nate Palmer's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Credit where it's due: this team is finding ways to win the past couple of weeks. Unfortunately it was the opposite for the first 3 months of the season. Twins are still a ways from respectability, but it's nice to see them trending in the right direction. Polanco is the team MVP and it's not close, great to see both Polanco and Donaldson step up the past few weeks. Maybe Cruz' departure has opened up a spot for Donaldson to be the veteran leader of the team, he definitely seems more emotionally engaged lately. Jeffers has come around. Kepler's seemed to turn the corner. Sano's in a little bit of a groove. Garver is playing very well. OK Jax, keep doing what you are doing. Amazing to see the Twins on this little mini-run with Barnes, Ober, and Jax in the rotation. Whatever works. -
100% - In a year like this we all like to see young players develop, and new pitchers test out their stuff, but in the end it's always so much more fun when the team gets a W. It's been a nice 1.5 weeks of Twins baseball.

Game Score: Rays 10, Twins 4

Just watched the MLB.com video of the Kiermaier HR - yeesh, yeah that's not good defense. Heck, some outfielders would turn that into a single if the batter doesn't have wheels. -

Heck yeah Polanco - dude is straight up carrying the team right now. That extension looks very, very good right now and is probably the only extension that's working out. Kepler's, Sano's, and Dobnak's, not so much. Nice to see the workman-like outing from Ober. Twins went 5-2 against the Astros and Sox, not too shabby for a last place team. I'm soaking it up and enjoying it while I can, these moments are fleeting in 2021.- 50 replies

bighat replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice outing by Jax. It's pretty cool to see Jax and Ober doing something with their opportunities. Puts pressure on Dobnak which is much needed IMO, as well as some of our prized prospects. We need some competitive pitching on this team desperately. Good to see it. And I'll be damned if I'm going to sit by and watch someone rip Astudillo on this thread after hitting the game winning HR. He's basically Santa Claus with a baseball bat, and he put the Twins up late in the game with a bomba. Huge defensive grab in the 8th for a double play, flashing leather! Oh yeah, Twins win. If you hate that performance, you must be the type of person who likes pineapple on your pizza. Cause that just ain't right. -

You're feeling wayyyy more optimistic about Ober and Barnes than I am. I see Ober as a Devin Smeltzer-type (up and down for a couple years, long relief, fizzle) and I don't see Barnes as having an MLB future at all. -

Everyone deserves a fair shake. I don't think Falvey or Levine should be fired. That said, they should not be immune to criticism. They made terrible decisions and those admonishing those decisions have every right to do so. -

Hamilton must have said something about Falvine's wife in Spring Training or something - no idea why he hasn't received a shot this season. I see he's got 41 IP this season in AAA, 25 total appearances - did he get hurt? Guy's 26 and all of his numbers look great. Saw him in ST and definitely passed the eye test. I guess the Twins are doing diligence on guys like Burrows, Law, etc but it's painful to watch. Speaking of painful, check out this list: Cody Stashak Devin Smeltzer Luke Farrell Randy Dobnak Edward Colina Jorge Alcala Derek Law Look at this list of names. What do you do with these guys? All of them are injured, all of were supposed to be a piece of a puzzle - and now nobody's sure if they're worth anything at all. They've all struggled at the MLB level, and most have had more bad games than good. Seriously, what the heck are Twins pitching coaches doing to these guys' arms?- 25 replies

Week in Review: New-Look Rotation
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You're right - I was just mainly throwing it out there and saying "if it were 1982 this kid might be an every day starter somewhere". Not saying he should be one now. Just sort of tossing out a random thought that came to me. Sometimes I just post some musings here. I'm not here to talk about Gordon for Debate Club, or argue one way or another, or say "I'm right and you're wrong". I'm just posting thoughts. Again, my thought was that maybe in another era, Gordon could have had a career. Interesting to think about. That was really all I was saying.- 37 replies

Week in Review: New-Look Rotation
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand why Gordon's being sent down. I'm just saying that with some seasoning, the kid could probably hit .250 and steal 40 bases. Maybe seems like the type of player who could have had a chance to play a few full seasons in the 70s, 80s, or 90s. I'm not saying he should be here, or even deserves to be here in 2021. Just observing and bringing up a conversation, nothing more.- 37 replies

Week in Review: New-Look Rotation
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wonder what Tony Gwynn, Ozzie Smith, or Rod Carew's barrel % was? Seriously, were those hits all barrelled? Would guys like that get a chance to play in 2021? Greg Maddox won 15 games in 1990 (along with 8 complete games). In 2021, would he have been sent down to AAA because of he only averaged 5 strikeouts per 9? Not saying barrel % and k/9 don't matter, just wondering how many great players from the past wouldn't have been considered roadkill in today's all-or-nothing game.- 37 replies

bighat replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Credit where it's due - nice job by Jax. Wish the team could have piled on a bit more after the big inning, but we've seen enough to know that's not how it's working in 2021. We'll take a win over the 'Stros any day. Would be nice to see the Twins win this series. Robby Ref picking up right where he left off, in the middle of all the offense. -
Yep, Polanco is definitely the #1 hitter and pretty clearly the best offensive player on this team. Might be time to start thinking about him as a guy to build around. Where the heck is Donaldson? Has he played since the trade deadline?

Game Score: Cardinals 5, Twins 1
bighat replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'll agree, Nancy. Jax's strikeout/walk numbers pedestrian, his FIP is 6.16. I can't picture him being a long-term part of any team in any role at this rate, maybe he'll be on the shuttle bus next year but I think that'll be it. Also would love to be proven wrong. His last two starts have been serviceable, good for him. He's clearly learned something and we might as well keep running him out there.
