    This is discussed in the rules of baseball, 4.03. Interestingly, it also says all other fielders must be in fair territory when the pitch is delivered. This would negate the "invite pitch" made famous in The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings.

    How extreme can a shift be? Is there any rule requiring the use of a catcher? Theoretically, if no one is on base, there could be an advantage to putting the catcher into the field. The umpire probably wouldn't like it, but is there a rule saying you have to have a player catch?

We can't get baseball players to show up for the baseball world tournament, and when they do, they don't really try. If I owned a soccer team, I'd tell FIFA to get bent.

    I had no expectation for the boys this year. Of the three games, I've seen in person, two were real, real, good. The team looks like they believe in themselves, and if they try hard, good results can happen. It's a nice, nice change of pace.

    Listening to far off baseball from an AM station through static and storm, trying to get in an inning before the signal drifts away, is a magical joy our children will never experience in this digital age. Besides the NBC Game of the Week, once upon a time the only chance to experience out of town baseball was the radio.

    1.) You pay your 20 dollars. But now you can pay month by month if you choose. 2.) You can listen either on your computer, or on a smartphone/tablet with the "mlb at bat" app. 3.) You can listen to either teams' radio broadcast. In the case of last night's game, you could also listen to either teams' Spanish language feed. You use that to select your audio feed.

    The news of the day is that David Moyes, the replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson, is out as manager of Manchester United. 1.) Is Manu out of Champions League next year, and also out of Euro League? 2.) Was Moyes put into an impossible situation? 3.) To what degree are the American owners of Manu responsible for this failure? 4.) How much schadenfreude is permitted? Some, a lot, or a whole lot?

    Such an odd world baseball is; breaking a man's leg is clean play, but bunting is unsportsmanlike.

    OK Easy 10, here's a question. What movies about association football can you recommend? I've seen two: Bend it Like Beckham, and Green Street Hooligans. There's lots of movies about baseball. I'd like to see more about soccer.

    This was the first game I attended this year. It was just as I remember them from last year.

    Sometimes a hit is better than a walk. They build statues for men who play that way. Two of them are on the grounds of Target Field.

    Before every home game, the Liverpool fans sing You'll Never Walk Alone. The Wednesday after the Hillsborough disaster, a European Cup semi-final game between A.C. Milan and Real Madrid was played. The referee stopped play two minutes into the game to hold a minute's silence for those who lost their lives at Hillsborough. Halfway through the minute's silence, the A.C. Milan fans sang Liverpool's "You'll Never Walk Alone" as a sign of respect. This is one of the greatest examples of sportsmanship I have ever seen.     I like everything about soccer, except the soccer. I like the excitement of the crowds, the controversies, the passion, the blatant diving. The WAGS. In supposedly socialist Europe, soccer is a true meritocracy. There is promotion and relegation. Success is rewarded, failure is punished. There is no draft, no salary cap. There is no limit to the size of your team, only how many you can dress for a game. There is no competitive balance. The good teams are much better than the poor teams. The actual games I fast forward through until there is a goal. I can only imagine what a soccer fan, used to continuous action, thinks while watching a baseball game. Ten men standing around, usually doing nothing. For three hours. Of course, to a baseball fan, there is more to it than that. There are subtleties, and the anticipation of impending action. The one thing I will never understand is MLS. Who wants to watch a league of Americans play soccer, might as well have a league of Americans play hockey.

    You can't win if you don't play. I have a distinct memory of being in Las Vegas, Nevada in December 1990 and not betting the Twins at 60 to 1 to win the World Series.
