  1. http://msn.foxsports.com/north/story/fox-sports-north-plus-channel-information-011214 This says 254. 254?? Once upon a time Bruce Springsteen wrote "57 channels and nothin on" Things change. When I was a kid in South Dakota we had two channels. One of them had baseball.
  2. 1. Leave "baseball information" up on some of the scoreboards in between innings. Between innings you get a little break and it's a good chance to catch up on other games, and update your scorecard if you've missed something. But they take everything down for the sake of ads and promotional gimmicks. 2. Have an "adult swim" even once a year. I know that they have lots of guys whose livelihoods are based on game production, but it all is very loud, and very much the same game in and game out. Have even one game where they drop all of that, and concentrate on baseball. 3. Get rid of Sue Nelson and hire a better organist. There. I've said it. Now I can burn in hell.
  3. Hasn't this been true for about 90 years? Weren't the Washington Senators "First in war, first in peace, last in the American League?" Isn't the book The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant and the play Damn Yankees, all about how unstoppable the Yankees are, and the only way to beat them is to sell your soul to the devil? The more things change, the more they stay the same. There's a certain comfort in that.
  4. What if they look at one part of a play and see something overturnable in another part of the same play? http://d3j5vwomefv46c.cloudfront.net/photos/large/817148387.gif?1382574825 In the 2013 World Series umpires overturned this play, Dustin Pedroia sliding into second base. This is just the sort of play that would be reviewed via instant replay with the new rules. What if, in reviewing whether Pete Kozma caught the ball from Matt Carpenter, the review umpire decided that Pedroia went out of the baseline and should be out? (This should be a gif animation. The picture loader inexplicably changes the extension to jpeg.)
  5. Zack Hample is a notorious ball hawk. His blog has several visits to Target Field. http://zackhample.mlblogs.com/2010/05/08/5410-at-target-field/ http://zackhample.mlblogs.com/2011/09/22/91611-at-target-field/ http://zackhample.mlblogs.com/2013/06/13/61113-at-target-field/
  6. Zero balls: The first year Metrodome was open, after a few innings, I got up to walk around and check the place out. During my journey, a foul ball bounced off of the very seat I had been sitting in. A couple of years back at Wrigley Field, a ball came very close. It was rather mesmerizing; you see batted balls all the time but this one came right for us. My wife held up a Cubs blanket she had bought to defend herself. Fortunately a guy sitting to our right reached over and grabbed the ball. Last year at Target Field I was sitting in one of those concrete troughs near the field for people with limited mobility. A foul ball bounced maybe 10 feet from me. I had brought a glove but made no try to snag it. It was a high pop up and the daytime sun was blinding. One bat: After the last game of the 2011 season we were standing next to the field. Drew Butera walked by, his arms loaded with gear. My wife put out her hand. Drew handed her a bat. A Louisville Slugger "Genuine I13" model Delmon Young. Has pine tar on it. The bat is next to me as I type this.
  7. He's been taking a LOT of heat for that.
  8. My list: 1 Bashar al-Assad 2 Muhammad Ali 3 Scott Putesky (Daisy Berkowitz) 4 George H. W. Bush 5 Amanda Bynes 6 Glen Campbell 7 Fidel Castro 8 Dick Cheney 9 Verne Gagne 10 Superstar Billy Graham (wrestler) 11 Scott Hall 12 Valerie Harper 13 Steven Hawking 14 Clive James 15 Warren Jeffs 16 Kim Jong-Un 17 Casey Kasem 18 Teresa Heinz Kerry 19 Jerry Lewis 20 William "The Refrigerator" Perry 21 Prince Philip 22 Keith Richard 23 Jake "The Snake" Roberts 24 Ariel Sharon 25 Randy Travis Jake The Snake looked remarkably fit Monday night. Might be a wasted pick.
  9. MLB.com writers have released their HoF ballots. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/how-mlbcom-writers-voted-in-hall-of-fame-balloting?ymd=20140106&content_id=66341930&vkey=news_mlb It's always interesting to see how seriously people take this matter.
  10. Is it too late to amend my list?
  11. It's a Hall of Fame, not a Hall of WAR. Entry shouldn't be governed by any one statistic, especially such a new, synthetic one that different people calculate in different ways. Those who have distorted the record book by using PEDs get to keep the records, and the money, but that's all.
  12. It's free but blacked out in the Minnesota market. A game not on local TV. Guess they're just doing me a favor not letting me watch it.
  13. Am necromancing this thread in hopes that Slowball is still around. The 2014 schedule is out and if you're still planning on making a visit to the US/MN now's the time to start penciling in dates. Bring lots of money. We need all we can get.
  14. To compare and contrast, here is a link to the infield fly called during the playoff game between St. Louis and Atlanta last season. Atlanta Braves 8th Inning Infield Fly Rule Controversy against STL Cardinals | LIVE 10-5-12 - YouTube There are people who will, with a straight face, tell you that both calls are correct. Never loan them money.
  15. No group of people do their job worse than major league umpires. Not butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, doctors, lawyers, or Indian chiefs.
  16. Kobs is correct. Do you know what your dates of travel are yet? Opening day is different every year. Will you be visiting cities besides Mpls./St. Paul? Are you interested in seeing baseball in any other cities? I ask because you will be in Chicago and New York City. Are you traveling with others?
  17. "The mind is a strange thing, men. We must begin by asking it what is losing. Losing is a disease, as contagious as polio. Losing is a disease as contagious as syphilis. Losing is a disease as contagious as bubonic plague. Attacking one, but infecting all. But curable."
