  1. How is it bogus? The team should act ethically in terms of unwritten roster manuevers but not in terms of unwritten rules involving new stadiums and commitments to fans? Do we need to live in a world are shenanigans against other billionaire owners is more of an injustice than shenanigans agaist the taxpaying peons? If it's bogus, you should probably clarify why instead of just throwing that word out there, otherwise it seems like it just doesn't fit your narrative.
  2. Kind of like the obivous spirit of the rule that says when the taxpayers build you a new stadium which you claim you need to become an equal to your peers, you open up the wallet to compete with said peers to put the best possible team on the field.
  3. I'm a pretty big fan of another Gorgism. The one where if you have AP you really don't want a better QB than Ponder.
  4. Which city?! Perhaps it's just because I haven't watched SportsCenter in about five years but I have a hard time believing people are saying Jeter is better than Ruth, Gerhig or Mantle unless you're polling teenage girls.
  5. I hate the Yankees, and I've disliked Jeter simply by association. So I'm pretty annoyed that this taunt of a thread makes me a Jeter apolgist. His defense was overrated but only in terms of Gold Glove kind of voting where the award really goes to the best SS who can hit. Everyone knew he was never the best defensive SS, it's not like the media gave him a pass on that just the rubes who vote for the biggest name. But defense? Who gives a crap about defense anymore especially in this day where most teams strive to strike out the batter as opposed to letting them put the ball in play? Offensively he was one of the top 3 SS ever. He had great players around him, but seeing as he was batting in front of them, providing a career .388 OBP and yearly double digit power from the top of the lineup, I'd be more inclined to say HE made the sluggers behind him look better.
  6. Wolfson may be right, but he has been all over the place this offseason. I can't remember if it was Hughes or Nolasco that he said the Twins weren't in on, then only a couple of days later they signed. Then last week we had him saying the Twins were expressing zero interest in Aledmys Diaz: Then said the exact opposite six days later:
  7. I hope so. I was already hoping the Twins were trying to find a taker for Duensing, Diamond or the new guy Kris Johnson as it is. I thought this team was done stockpilling swingmen but this team certainly seems to have a soft spot for soft-tossing lefties. Duensing's improved K/9 is making him look pretty darn good in this mess, even with his arb payday.
  8. It's sane to go after the younger guy you may be able to include in future plans, who is more likely cheaper and doesn't require a draft pick. It seems much less sane to give three years at $10 mill per to an injury prone, 31-year-old who skated by on RHP and home splits which mask a clear and quick decline into what should be a bench/utility role.
  9. Why would you trade for one if there are options other than having to give up a prospect? Also any GM who doesn't consider a free agent SS because he MAY draft one in six months should not have a job. For one, Turner may go before the Twins pick, for another, he may not be that good and may not be worth the #5 pick. Plenty of people have Turner a lot further down the draft boards.
  10. Agreed, there's not nearly the hype on this guy as there was for Abreu, his price should be much less That being said, if the Dodgers, Yankees or another big club wants him, we probably can't kid ourselves, the Twins would have to overpay to pry him out of the big market, contending team.
  11. I understand all that, and don't want to lose our stars before their prime, but as a guy who enjoys the historical aspects of the game, I hate it. Robin Yount wouldn't be a member of the 3000 hit club if the Brewers had made him wait until he was 21 to get to the big leagues. Ted Williams and Eddie Mathews would not be members of the 500 HR club. We would have missed the best season's of Tony Conigliaro's tragically short career. Sandy Koufax only pitched 12 years in the MLB, and only in the last six was he anything other than an average pitcher. Would he ever have become the pitcher we know today if he was stuck in the minors those first six seasons "figuring things out?"
  12. I'm all in on this guy assuming he can stick at SS. Probably can't answer those questions though until his showcase at the earliest.
  13. St. Louis has been doing this a lot lately too. I'd rather see future rotation hopefuls like Meyer and May in the pen building up confidence and getting some MLB innings than past rotation duds like Diamond and Worley. Not going to happen though unless the Twins are able to move some of these swing guys. They don't want to lose them for nothing.
  14. The second coming of Nick Putno snagged $4 mill per year. The third coming of Nick Punto even got $2.75 mill per and he just signed in November.
  15. No kidding. Other teams will be looking at his full body of work last year but why would the Royals? Most aquiring teams would likely evaluate a player based on what they did for THEM after the trade, and in only 42 games he put up a 1.2 WAR with a .352 OBP and .700 OPS. That kind of production from a jack-of-all trades utility player seems pretty reasonable to me if I'm a member of the Royals front office.
  16. I would hope 2.5 isn't enough to box anyone out in this day and age of baseball, but refusing to overpay for a utility player may be more of an issue of principle.
  17. I'd guess Law wouldn't normally even rank a player in the top 100 if he truely thought they would take six years to make it. I suspect that his extended timeline prediction was at least in part due to his perception that the Twins are ultra-conservative with their players. In other words, would Law still be predicting six years if Stewart had been drafted by the Mets? Probably not.
  18. Yes, I agree. Just because Garza, Santana and Jiminez signed/are signing late doesn't mean the Twins would get a bargain on them. Last year Ryan was telling the MLB Network that he couldn't get guys to come here. For all we know, these three would be the kind of arms who have no interest in coming here for whatever reason. Besides, I've been one of those complaining that Ryan was too passive and conservative, I'm certainly not going to hypocritically flip sides now. It does seem like the Twins don't have luck on their side though. Usually the free agents that wait until February to sign are either very questionable or out of the Twins price range. Now the one year the Twins were willing to spend money, these guys look to be taking late season discounts; alas the bankroll has been depleted and the roster spaces are nearly full.
  19. I thought it was meth and he was going to be the star of a new show called "Breaking Bats"
  20. No, it's always been Sano and Rosario. They've been like Batman and Robin their whole trip through the system. Arcia was always ahead of them a level or two.
  21. I'm just fine with the Twins not being the Cubs. I have no problem with attendance being tied directly to the performance on the field, that should keep everyone honest and competitive. Jobs may finally be tied to performance if performance is also tied to attendance.
  22. I hope the Glory Days referrence isn't any indicator of Barrios success, because it seems to me the implication of the song is that the guy never made it and his best days were behind him. Long Live the Boss!
  23. Agreed I forget the exact breakdown but until about seven games left last year the Twins could have gotten as high as three in the draft or as low as 16. There's not much difference among the have-nots these days. Power rankings are silly, but if the writer is 17 I'll give him credit. Writing a sports blog is probably a more productive way to further his career goals than what I did. If I recall correctly my path was basically sitting around looking for excuses to be unproductive and answering " I don't know" when someone would ask me what I wanted to do with my life.
  24. While I'm not a big Presley fan, I think it's safe to say he'll be making the team regardless of any bench pieces added. You need to compare Bonifacio to Mastroianni and/or Escobar. If it's OPS you want (from a utility guy? I simply hope to get him on base) those two need to be purged from the discussion.
