  1. Will the Twins be so proactive? Should they?
  2. I wasn't denying the claim, I just didn't recall anyone projecting him as such. I haven't read every write up on these guys.
  3. Does Newcomb remind anyone else of Jon Lester? I haven't seen any scouts compare the two but surely someone else has mentioned it.
  4. I'm just curious, who said he was a perenial all star? Jackson, Gordon, Newcomb, Toussain and Holmes are all pretty much tied for me right now, but that's only on the condition that Jackson is put in the OF day one. HS catchers have nearly a 100% bust rate over the last dozen years, I want no business of trying to develop one at the possible or even likely expense of his offense.
  5. Is Romero going to start out of the gate? If he's going to start in the pen, perhaps that's why he got the nod over Gonsalves. Aren't we still waiting for Yorman Landa to get a chance to start? Unless he's already been written off, the CR rotation is still kind of full to promote two new starters.
  6. No disagreement, I'll give the staff a chance to let the next wave prove them right. One thing that is concerning though, while I like that they have traded for what looks to be two quality power arms in Meyer and May, they still have been pretty terrible in identifying and developing their own. It's not surprising that Boer, Boyd, Summers, Bashore, Melotakis etc haven't panned out yet, what is surprising is that none of them could miss bats and/or maintain the velocity that was expected of them. That aspect of their game should have been somewhat predictable even if overall success was a long shot. Hopefully Berrios, Thorpe and Stewart also prove them a changed team in that regard.
  7. I'm sure Parmelee will get plenty of chances to shine sitting on the bench in favor of Jason Kubel. I'm all for emulating the best aspects of teams like the A's. The problem is that the A's are very good at identifying, drafting and developing young pitching to fill the top and/or middle of the rotation. Perhaps adhering more to the A's philosophy would help the Twins, but there's probably a strong chance it's less about philosophy and more about baseball accumen. The A's just may have the personell to find these pitchers and the Twins perhaps do not. Hard to overcome that if personell change is not an option.
  8. I agree, though I'm starting to like Newcomb. I don't think I'd be upset with the pick. Not sure who I want most outside of Aiken, Rodon and Kolek, but Newcomb, Jackson, Holmes, Gordon and Toussaint are probably the only other five I'd want considered right now.
  9. Nice work Jim! Another masterpiece picked up by MLBTR: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/draft-links-padres-ryan-phillies-jays.html
  10. I'm all for the Twins being trailblazers. They've been among the last teams to adopt any new baseball ideas for abuot a decade. If the slider is shelved while he develops his other pitches and he becomes better and stays healthy because of it, great, I like the plan. I like it a lot. But by being a trailblazer, you also will have more questions than answers until it's time to show your finished results. The Twins are already synonymous with strikeout futility. Fair or not, if they screw this up and turn Stewart into another arm that can't miss bats, they are going to have some explaining to do. Again, I have no problem with them trying this approach, in fact I like the idea of them trying something different, but that doesn't mean there isn't some concern.
  11. Well I wouldn't expect him to say much different. "“I’d like to see us take more left-handed pitching. That would be my preference. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the first guy, but that wouldn’t bother me either." I think Newcomb is legitimately in play.
  12. " But when you look at the five starters currently comprising the rotation, you can't really argue that any are deserving of a demotion." "Samuel Deduno hasn't been spectacular since taking over for Pelfrey in early May, but certainly hasn't done anything to put his job in danger." "You can't really punish a guy for being unlucky. Correia is doing what he needs to do." I'm certainly not arguing against anything in the article, but these passages imply reactive management as opposed to proactive management. I also don't mean to imply these are your feelings as clearly this is something we would expect from the Twins. Maybe it's not fair to Deduno or Correia to lose their job, BUT if there is a guy in AAA who appears to be better, fair needs to be tossed in the trash. After all, it's not fair to the players in the locker room, it's not fair to the fans and it's not fair to the sport of baseball to keep a superior pitcher in AAA for the sole reason of doing kindness to the guy at the majors. How do we weigh fairness for an individual against everyone else? If hurting Correia's feelings MUST be avoided at all costs, the Twins could do what the Cardinals do and bring him up to get his feet wet in the pen.
  13. I think putting them in a "college" like atmosphere could be beneficial. These guys are missing out on a pretty key developmental stage, both socially and educationally, in most peoples lives. Of course I found that dark auditoriums were best used for sleeping, but I heard others got a lot out of those classes.
  14. This is a fun question. What exactly would people here give up for the 39th pick? The Marlins are getting ripped for giving it up for a (below) average reliever, but odds are that 39th pick would be lucky to become a (below) average reliever. Personally I'd give up most of the Twins relief corp for the 39th pick, but I might have to think long and hard about whether it's because I truely think the pick will turn out to be a good player or simply because getting extra draft picks is awesomely fun.
  15. Great stuff, this should be fun. Another name I believe the Twins are looking at for the #2 pick is Jake Stinnett. I like Reed though. Think they will be able to go back-to-back HS kids? Gordon doesn't look to be the easy sign guy he did a month ago.
  16. When I heard the slider was shelved I felt a little better. Still there is some concern. There's really not much historical precedence of strikeout pitchers at the MLB level who couldn't manage strong K rates in A ball.
  17. I care more about the bat than the position. I'd rather have Manny Rameriz as a corner outfielder than Alan Trammell at SS. Their WAR is pretty identical. The position bonus for WAR is weighted way to heavily. Offense is still, and always will be more important than defense. Rameriz has over a 200 point edge in career OPS. No defense in the world makes up for that.
  18. The Twins have been watching him a lot recently. I think he's a legit option.
  19. Beede is a hard throwing, uncontrollable project. Wimmers was "MLB ready," threw in the low 90's and got strikeouts due to his control; numbers which generally don't translate at the MLB level. Wimmers may have been drafted lower than Nola will likely go, but they appear to be very similar pitchers.
  20. But when have the Twins ever added a couple of ticks to a fastball or improved strikeout rates? If this were the Cardinals or A's, yeah maybe it would be a good pick as they have a history of getting more out of already well regarded pitchers. The Twins don't. It's been since 2005 that the Twins took a pitcher that even met expectations, that being Matt Garza. I think if you want a front of the rotation arm, they have to get one that already has the velocity and movement like they've done with Meyer, May and Stewart. They aren't sure things, but at least there's a chance.
  21. Man, it never occured to me until now that high schoolers have never seen Kirby Puckett play. I guess that also means there are kids of legal drinking age who didn't see the last World Series championship. Depression setting in. On topic: Good ideas.
  22. I do think of Brad Radke and smile. I don't think of aiming for a Brad Radke at #5 overall and smile. It's like aiming for another division title knowing it has next to no chance of turing into a World Series title.
  23. I think it's the opposite, actually, Nola's floor is being upplayed. I like Gibson, but he's not going to be a #2 pitcher with a 5.0-6.0 K/9 rate. He doesn't have the stuff to miss bats and it doesn't appear Nola does either. These guys at best look to be middle of the rotation guys and at #5 you can and should shoot for better than that.
  24. Well Reusse gave Plouffe props for his RBI total so I'm guessing WAR may not be something he is looking at. More likely he sees the .247 BA and is giving him demerits. Old school stats for Ruesse.
  25. Outrage may not be the best word, but one would have to be a pretty passive fan to not be disappointed and upset that their team is in a four year relationship with losing. Emotionless and passiveness are not two of the better upper midwest behavioral stereotypes. Still, I think booing is dumb and says more about the fan that it does about the player. In my book, booing means "I want attention for my displeasure and I'll do it loud enough so everyone can hear and appreciate me!" Or "Well, everyone else is doing it!"
