  1. With Ryan's previous comments about how he uses Goin when necessary, I actually have concerns. His comments sounded to me that he uses Goin when Goin tells him something he likes or agrees with. I don't think this half-measured approach will work; I think you need to be willing to commit to it even when it gives you data you don't want to hear.
  2. Another great articl Parker, I can't wait to see which sites pick up on this one! The paragraphs discussing Gardy being resistant or having to be convinced to use infield shifts is why this club needs to be careful about selecting a new manager. After all, is there really a point of sending an analytics guy with the team if the manager is going to drag his feet regarding the suggestions for improvement? For the most part, I don't think these analytics are something you can pick and chose what you want to adhere to. I think you have to either buy into it or ignore it completely. You can't begrudgingly use infield shifts but still insist on bringing in a soft tosser from the pen who tries to hit the outside corners.
  3. Yes, I hope Goodrum's move to 3B was soley for the development of Polanco. Goodrum did split SS duties with Anderlin Mejia once Polanco got promoted. Goodrum has next to no prospect luster if he remains at 3B, though a .672 OPS doesn't look good at any position. Let's hope it's just due to the curse of the Florida State League.
  4. I'd probably still rather have Branca than Frankie Rodrigez or Rich Robertson.
  5. Sure he gave up 5 HR and 5 BB in 2 IP, but I heard his OF defense was terrible.
  6. Yeah, I was hoping the discussion was merely thinking about temporarily putting less stress on his elbow. If you move Sano from 3B to the OF, wouldn't that signifiy the end of Arcia? I don't see this team fielding those two both as corner OF, but I'm nowhere close to being done with Arcia myself. I think his bat has way too much potential.
  7. Yup. They also have to do better in the draft at identifying power starting pitchers who won't kill you with their control and they have to do better at identifying free agents who best fit the team, the ballpark and the LEAGUE they play in. All of this is easy to say, and all of this is what Mackey was trying to say (I think). But really, duh. The Twins first need to identify HOW St. Louis is doing this, or WHY the Twins can't. I don't know and St. Louis isn't going to spill company secrets, but this front office still can't emulate anything until they have a step-by-step blueprint. If you weld a Cadillac hood ornament on a Kia, it's still just a Kia.
  8. If payroll doesn't make a difference, the team should have stayed in the Metrodome. They had a hell of a homefield advantage there. I wonder why the team wanted to leave that place?
  9. Yeah, I hate to say it, but I don't think this is an issue with MLB being greedy. Network televsion doesn't want MLB unless it's on the weekends and not going up against more than one NFL game. Fox used to have most if not all of the games. Fox didn't get out bid by ESPN, and they certainly didn't get outbid by their minion station FS1. Sports are popular, but they are still a niche attraction, particularly baseball. Network TV does not cater to niche programing. They have dumbed down fair to try to grab the lowest denominators. It's the reason any television junkie will tell you that almost all the best written and produced scripted shows are on cable now. Network TV just doesn't want baseball anymore. I suspect that will now only change if MLB changed the playoff rules so the games only fall on weekends. Even the big bad NFL has this problem. Don't forget that Monday Night Football got dropped from ABC and got relegated to ESPN.
  10. Yeah, can you imagine the the hellfire that would rain down on the Twins if they had Liriano and Martin (and their Pittsburgh production of course) and they didn't either re-sign or give a QO to both?
  11. Gibson isn't the problem, much like Kevin Correia wasn't the problem in 2013. The problem is that the Twins rely on them to be at the front of the rotation when a normal playoff team would be deciding if these guys would make the post season roster as a long man in the bullpen or if they'd be left off completely.
  12. And how'd that work out for this club? If Gibson, or a Gibsonesque pitcher is the #2 going forward, we're going to be having managerial searches every year.
  13. The Twins never buy and flip free agents. At least not good ones. They should. They haven't. And if a guy like Masterson has a good year, why do you think the Twins wouldn't be involved in extension talks when you suggest they should sign the same or better caliber free agents for that kind of money and years now? Why would the Twins go after James Shields for 2015 but not Justin Masterson in 2016? I sincerely doubt Masterson could get a $100 million deal in 2016, but if he did, think about how good his 2015 season would be. His one year deal in 2015 for $10-14 million deal would be a bargain and he almost certainly would be worth a qualifying offer in 2016. If the Twins signed anyone on a one year deal this offseason and that player turned into a $100 million dollar player come 2016, that means the Twins hit the jackpot.
  14. I think the question he was asked at the press conference was something along the lines of 'With the influx of Latin talent, do you think it would be a good idea to consider a Latin manager?' He then replied yes, that a manager or coach (which dishearteningly seemed to be the emphasis) would be considered for that reason. So I think he already answered that question. Besides, if average fans like us can understand the benefits of a Hispanic influence, I'm sure Ryan does as well.
  15. I agree with everyone saying the Span for Meyer trade was just what this club needed to try, even if Meyer doesn't work out. I do think Mike has a point however in that our expectations need to be rewarded once in awhile. Ryan has not made a trade that panned out in a long time. We do have several that are TBD involving guys like Meyer, May, Milone and Gilmartin but pending future results, Ryan has not scored big on a deal in quite awhile. We need to have our patience rewarded, and I'd think soon. The GM doesn't get a free pass for trade failures in perpetutity becase he made some shrewed ones over a decade ago. But for the record, I think both Meyer and May are going to work out.
  16. Right. Surely the Cubs are much more happy with their Scott Feldman and Jason Hammel signings the last two years than they are with the Edwin Jackson deal. Heck, I'm sure the Cubs are happier with the Scott Baker deal than the Jackson deal.
  17. In Gardy's farewell press conference Mr. Ryan stated that the club would consider hiring a Hispanic manager or at least a coach. Have any been interviewed at this point?
  18. All free agent pitchers fail more than they work out, at least these if these guys fail, they do so only for a year or two. Also, I'm not sure why a guy on a one year deal wouldn't help you if you want to get better now. That's exactly what they are brought in to do. Scott Kazmir, Edinson Volquez, Fransico Liriano, Dan Haren, Scott Feldman, Ervin Santana, Bartolo Colon, Jason Hammel, Hiroki Kuroda, Tim Hudson were all guys with some upside signed to 1-2 year deals in the last couple of years. There are plenty that have failed, but I bet we can come up with more names that have worked out on short term deals than we could find for long term deals and it wouldn't even be close. The only long term deals that seem to work out are basically extenstions for guys still under contract, Cole Hammels, Felix Hernandez and Clayton Kershaw. These seem to have better success rates (though really the jury is still out on these) likely because these guys are still young. Show me a young free agent arm, like Phil Hughes, and I'll get on board a longer term deal. I used to be all for signing big time free agent pitchers to long term deals, but it's looking more and more like a house bet. You just can't win. Very few pitchers are among the elite and healthy year in and year out once they get past their early 30's.
  19. Did the decision to replace Gary Lucas have anything to do with a change in organizational pitching philosophy? Which bald character from Breaking Bad do you most identify with?
  20. I've always been a big Shields fan, but he's going to cause his next team a ton of buyer's remorse. When you first see he has 8 consecutive seasons of 200+ IP, (sometimes very +) you think that's awesome. But it's only awesome because it's not expected anymore. So now the buying team is supposed to expect 9, 10, 11 and 12 or maybe 13 seasons of 200+ IP? No way. With that significantly declining K rate, he's a disaster waiting to happen. Let the big clubs make more foolish decisions with Shields, Lester and Scherzer. If they want to continue to make poor choices, don't stop them. Go for the higher upside guys on short deals. There are plenty out there. Learn from the Pirates, not the Yankees.
  21. I was totally behind the Royals, maybe because subconsiously I thought they had no chance. Now with every win, I'm kind of at the point where every Royal related thought that comes into my head also comes with the accompanying depressing thought, "The Royals have won more playoff games than the Twins in the last decade!?" and "The Royals have won more playoff series than he Twins in the last decade!?" It's going to get dicier if those thoughts become, "The Royals have made it to the WS more recently than the Twins ?!" and "The Royals have WON the WS more recently than the Twins ?!" Go Royals?
  22. I don't think you fix the rotation by spending $100 million on a 34 year old with a plummetng K rate.
  23. For some reason there seems to be a minimum 12 month delay of recovery for concussions in Minnesota. It doesn't seem to occur elsewhere, maybe it's something in the water. Normally I'd be right with John on this topic, but perhaps Buxton needs shake the cobwebs out for a bit drinking some of the water polluted with factory runoff in industrial upstate NY befor coming West.
  24. The only reason I would care if the Twins had a manager lined up before free agency started was if they thought they needed one to entice a particular free agent. Say if Yasmani Tomas would be more inclined to play here if his manager was Sandy Alomar Jr.
  25. I guess it's safe to say that Thorpe will not be on BA's top 100 list then.
