  1. You've got to be kidding. Ryan has needed three interviews to get a read on Paul Molitor and he still hasn't made a decision. We're talking about a man Ryan has known for at least two decades. I highly doubt Ryan has enough intel on Maddon to rule him out as a logical choice for the position.
  2. At what point does this stuff move from coincedence to pattern? I'd still say this falls under the former, but I'm curious how many more injuries he can get before people start calling it a trend.
  3. That's the Twins choice that it makes up 31% of the payroll. If they had an payroll reflective of their new stadium and inferences made to fans, Mauer's contract would probably only make up about 20% of the payroll. If this team wanted to garner sympathy using this theory, they could simple continue to drop their payroll until Joe's salary eats up 50% all while saying it was Joe Mauer's contract that was forcing their hand. Mauer's contract is only an albatross when it's convenient for it to look that way. And to be fair, I don't recall the team ever indicating that it was.
  4. I'd like the idea of Buehrle a lot more if we viewed him as a mid-season trade chip, but the Twins have not seemed inclined to eat a contract for better prospects and I'm not inclined to offer the Blue Jays better prospects so that they would do it. He could be the Cy Young front runner come July, but if he's still got $9 million left on his contract, no team is going to give up much of anything for a soft tosser like Buehrle.
  5. No, this team needs pitchers who will not continue to stress the already overmatched defenders. Neither Capuano or Buehrle are fits for this club, but the team should not be looking to add more pitchers who will demand that the defense get him 86% of his outs.
  6. Kids have no clue, how about a wife? I have one. I can tell you that if I got a raise but told her that we were going to start putting 70% of my paycheck into our retirement accounts and we were getting rid of the internet, cable, and we were going to sell the cars and start riding the bus to afford it, that decision would not go over well.
  7. So Jim Pohlad has begun taking part in the interview process? http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/280564562.html Um, not sure what to make of that. If it's a lack of confidence in Ryan's decision, it probably means Ryan shouldn't be there in the first place. If he actually thinks his baseball IQ will be usefull in the decision, then I fear we may have a burgeoning George Steinbrenner or Jerry Jones. I guess option #2 wouldn't be bad if he started commiting payroll like an owner that views the team like a hobby. Not holding my breath though.
  8. Remember we had the WORST starting staff in the league by strikeouts too.
  9. Right, but this team has a history of giving the iffy pitchers a shot over real prospects. So Buehrle may simply be blocking Logan Darnell and Tommy Milone, but they in turn are blocking Alex Meyer.
  10. With May and Meyer on the cusp, I suppose the Twins are going to need to get creative in their efforts to stay at the bottom of the league in strikeouts.
  11. I don't know. The WS games in KC cost a fortune, but LaRussa is still rich enough to splurge for 25 of them even if they couldn't get a group discount.
  12. I understand the rationale, but if they have concerns about how Sano would be handled in the Domincan League, why would they ever send a player there regardless of health? In particular, they should then never send a pitcher down there. TJ surgery should have little bearing on the decision, especially if a collision is their greatest fear.
  13. Very true, however I'd think putting undue stress on the new ligament by throwing a baseball across the diamond would be the biggest concern. After all, as you said, collisions tend to cause broken bones, not ligament damage, and having TJ surgury almost surely would not render him more likely to break a bone.
  14. Great analysis. I agree that managers don't generally have a huge impact on the W/L record. Now general managers.... Still, there is something about new managers that is likely intangible. Why else would Buck Scholwalter, Terry Francona or Bob Melvin almost immediately turn around teams that the previous managers failed with?
  15. I'd also think more TV's are turned on in TB or Houston during baseball season simply because the summer months can be pretty unbearable outdoors where as Minnesotans are very active in the warm months.
  16. Awful news. It puts what seemed like a year of bad luck with the Twins prospects in perspective. One wonders about the good he may have been able to do for his largely impoverished country had he turned into a superstar and gotten the contract equivilant. Terrible loss for baseball and for the Dominican Republic.
  17. The Twins surely aren't the favorites, but is Maddon to MN really that much more outrageous than Francona to Cleveland.
  18. Collision?!?!?!?! Is Ryan working on his Spanish and collision is the Spanish word for "throw across the diamond?" I'm no doctor, but it seems to me collisions don't tend to be a common cause of concern for upper body ligaments. Is there something else we don't know about?
  19. Nick Blackburn, Jason Marquis and Mike Lamb have weighed in. They all agree that it would be foolish to pay a guy that kind of money who doesn't actually play in the games.
  20. II agree. But can we get a pass if the team hires Dug Minkavich as manager?
  21. Well the Twins have the advantage of not being in a precarious position with an existing manager. If they are interested, they need to get out front of this NOW. Don't allow the Cubs, or whoever else may be interested, to hide in the shadows and try to work out a deal subversively. If the Twins make a bold move, these other teams aren't going to have a lot of time to decide if alienating their current manager and his supporters on the team is going to be worth the chance at getting Maddon. Don't disregard the fact that any other team that wants Madden is takng a risk that he'll say no. That will be damaging considering the existing manager is still under contract. Just think how awkward the situation with Mattingly would be if the Dodgers made a play for Madden but he instead chose the Cubs. The Twins need to make these teams decide now if they are willing to show their hands, or fold altogether.
  22. No Guerra? If not, the book on the Johan Santana trade has now officially been closed.
  23. May and Meyer and hope for a prayer.
  24. He has, I agree and that's why I would prefer him most out of the internal candidates. I do think he's open to new baseball ideas. That doesn't change the feeling that he also has the air of a "my way or the highway" kind of guy. Though perhaps his, standoffish? stoic? icy? demeanor betrays him to some degree. I don't even know how to describe him exactly.
  25. He's open-minded. He's more than that, but really, that's enough to get me excited. No more stubbornness please. For some reason, some people lately have been promoting the idea that stubborness is a good trait, when it's basically the death blow to inovation and evolution. I'm not saying Molitor or Meintkiewicz would be bad managers, but to me they seem like the type that would be described as bullheaded and they'd be proud of that fact. This game's always changing, we need people who will adapt with it, not drag their feet and insist the game must be played the way they most feel comfortable playing it.
