  1. Who's got the most trade value in July? That's who I want on a 1-2 year deal. And I don't want to sign anyone to platoon with Schaffer. If you can't find someone who can push Schaffer to the 4th OF spot completely, you might as well stay out of free agency all together.
  2. I'm glad the plan at this time is to start in Chattanooga. After getting pulled from winterball, I had the idea that for some reason he may not be ready to start the season and would end up at extended spring training. Also glad he's staying at 3B. He needs to play there until he proves he can't.
  3. Probably a hard steal considering his relationship with that club. Still, he was among my top preferences to get the manager's job, though to be fair my knowledge of his baseball philosophies is lacking. I liked that he was a catcher, I liked that he can relate to Hispanic players and I liked that he was a veteran of the AL Central, even though that last factor has more to do with the entertainment value of rivalries.
  4. An external guy would be someone who didn't get the job due to promotion.
  5. Great stuff Parker, I'll bet this one gets picked up by national sites that enjoy knowledgable baseball analysis. This kind of research shows why analytics are important. Not so much because of the data they produce, but more so to demonstrate that traditional long-standing philosophies are not always accurate or no longer accurate. This game is always evolving, every assumption made earlier than a week ago should be re-evaluated.
  6. Good for him. I'm sure he'll do a fine job. Still, it's getting a little frustrating that so far this club isn't hiring external candidates. Pitching coach will have to be, and since Glynn is the 3B coach, not the bench coach, bench coach looks like it might be external. Steinbach could still be a possibility I guess, but one would think he would have already been named if he was the top choice. Could still be Mientkiewicz too.
  7. I like Arcia but I'd do this trade. I doubt St. Louis would though. If St. Louis needs to fill a hole, they go and shore it up in free agency, they don't typically trade away young players unless they are clearly expendable or redundant. I'm not sure Miller is at that point. He still has more value and upside than Joe Kelly. Strange I know, seeing as they are merely a mid-market franchise.
  8. Also waiting for the Hispanic perspective, though considering the current makeup of the country club I guess any Hispanic perspective is also an outside perspective.
  9. So when will the Rockies file tampering charges against the Mets? Because there's no way in hell Cuddyer turns down that QO and signes this fast unless he already had a deal in place.
  10. What St. Peter said: "The Twins have a proud tradition and believe the team's uniforms have long been among the best in baseball. We are excited to introduce a new contemporary primary home uniform which evolves our brand via the introduction of a gold accent color representative of our home state, as well as our home ballpark." What he should have said: "Hey, check out these new uniforms." What would have been more entertaining for him to say: "Getting new uniforms was the fans fault. They didn't buy enough season tickets and we had to look for another revenue stream." Or "Check out these lovely new uniforms. Payroll won't increase so we have to distract you with these. What was that Jim? I've been told to tell you to forget that I said that last part and that there would be no limit on payroll just as there is no limit to the number of these fine jerseys you can buy. Joking aside, I did apprecieate him taking time to talk to TD.
  11. Pretty sure those are the lyrics to one of the songs sung by a supergroup of muscians in the 80's to promote some kind of world-wide cause.
  12. I'm trying to decide if they remind me more of what orderlies in a mental hospital wear or what you'd see at a Klan picnic. I'm also tying to figure out St. Peter's thought process behind his quote: "The Twins have a proud tradition and believe the team's uniforms have long been among the best in baseball. We are excited to introduce a new contemporary primary home uniform which evolves our brand via the introduction of a gold accent color representative of our home state, as well as our home ballpark." The team's old uniform was among the best in baseball, thus we have decided to change it!
  13. Say what you will about the Twins front office (and I sure as hell do!) but they don't seem nearly as shortsighted as the Mets. They are the first team that doesn't have their pick protected (15th) and they give it up to sign a 36-year-old who couldn't stay healthy last year? Classic Mets! I love Cuddyer, but I thought he would be crazy not to try to work out a deal to stay in Colorado. I thought free agent hitters had foresaken Queens with the hope of not fading away into obscurity. You have to think they're going to try to be like the Orioles from last year. Now that they've already lost their #1 pick, they're going to say "screw the draft" and try to sign a buch of players with a QO. I'm guessing most free agents are going to be wise enough to stay away though unless the money is stupid.
  14. Yeah, well people here last year were saying the same thing when the Twins would have virtuallly been trading Nick Burdi for a washed up and useless Stephen Drew.
  15. So far it's looking like the Twins are batting 0-1 with those. Looks like I'm in the minority, but I love the list. Those are exactly the kinds of guys I'm interested in, I love playing the pitcher lottory even if the odds are stacked. Last I did the math, the three big named pitchers have something like 2 million innings pitched on their arms (though my math could be slightly off). I wouldn't want a single one of them for more than a few years and you'll be getting them for at least a half decade. The only pitcher worth a long term deal is a young pitcher and you generally only get those in-house. So get these upisde types, hope they come through for you this year and either flip them or cross the QO/extension bridge next offseason. Ryan has shown the willingness to eat the contract of a player on a one year deal. No way will he do it for a guy on a 3-4 year deal.
  16. I don't believe that is insular to people's opinion of Joe Mauer's toughness. My first thought is to go on a "back in the day" bit about how people are more stubborn now and think changing one's opinion is a weakness, though it sounds wildly inaccurate to credit past generations open-mindedness, so I guess we just have to leave it up to classic human nature/lack of education debates.
  17. I don't know that Mauer is all that tough of an athlete, however to be fair, it's probably not something that should be determined by weighing pro/con voices in the media or fandom. After all, the media get more hits the more critical they are of local athletes, and of course the fans opinions are (sadly) all too often formed by what guys like Souhan says.
  18. Any unrealized Costa Rican talent we can have Dozeir scout?
  19. If so, she should start texting us some interesting pics.
  20. Can your wife come hang out with my wife?
  21. Ha, yes I was wondering how this conversation took such a u turn. What happened to blaming the trainer for not keeping these guys healty? Who knows what's going on here. One minute we're blaming Ryan and Gardy for criticizing Baker for not playing through what turned out to be an injury that would require TJ surgery, the next we're blaming them for coddeling Mauer. It's possible after the team misses something like Baker's injury they over-react and play it cautious with the next guy. Or it's possible every situation is different and simply put, you'll never get them all right.
  22. Yeah, some of those names really stick out. I'm guessing some of the bigger names just like to travel and others might just like the oportunity to play baseball. Either way, it's good for the game to have a few of the bigger names travel. Though you have to wonder if a team like KC really wants Jeremy Guthrie to actually pitch. They guy has hardly had a break from baseball this year.
  23. And the greatest tragedy of all would be if that career in medicine ended up becoming a commentator on the embarassing ESPN.
  24. Drew Butera on an All-Star team huh? That roster looks like it has at least a half dozen players that will at some point in their career play in Japan full time.
  25. I wonder if it's the Good Cop/Bad Cop routine, or if it's like when two people get accused of murder and their respective attorney's advise them to blame it on the other guy in an effort to create reasonable doubt with the jury.
