  1. It seemed to me that Meyer proved he was better than at minimum 3/5ths of the MLB rotation all year long. This team doesn't always let the younger, more talented player get his chance. They seem much more concerned about doing what is "fair" for the existig vet. I think the title of the thread is a bit off actually. The Twins haven't largely "rolled" with the young players they had in house in 15 years. They have seemed determined to "roll" with signing low ceiling, cheap stop-gap vets. They need to stop that ASAP. Go big, or stay home, but let's not pretend this team will ever go big. The Brandon McCarthys of the world need not apply. Besides, has anyone really looked at the free agent market this year? Aside from a couple of top end pitchers, it is sad and pathetic. There are not many upgrades, and next to nobody I'd want on anything more than a 1 year deal. Because it is so baren, those guys who may be any bit enticing are going to get overpaid in money, but more importantly years. Yuk. I've always been a free agency advocate, but not this year. This year is full of remorse and regrets.
  2. I agree, he wasn't the reason for the A's nosedive. That doesn't stop plenty of people from claiming his removal from the team was the cause.
  3. He's an above average fielder which is something people around here keep asking for, he's also generally an above average hitter, something that I want. If the asking price isn't too high I'd take him. Unfortunately, the asking price is almost certainly going to be more than he's worth. He's a big name, a two time HR derby champion and his absence caused the A's late season swoon (according to many ill-informed analysts). He's a solid MLBer but he's going to get traded and paid like a superstar and his play is not reflective of that designation.
  4. I would say that Schaffer is a lock for the 25-man next year but I said the same about Alex Presley last off season.
  5. I think the only fair thing to do is give all 22 teams that passed on Trout an F and the Angels get a B+, simply because Trout was their second choice.
  6. Which is why the team probably should have signed better quality free agents to 2-3 year deals in 2011-2013 who wouldn't block any young players. You then trade, offer a QO or let them walk, and began with the younger guys in 2014-16 now that the youngsters are becoming ready. I'm in the minority as I'm fine with a roster made up of cheap players under 30 years old now. I don't desire a large payroll this year. It should have been higher though during the years without a prospect heavy lineup.
  7. It would have seemed foolish at the time, but it's been clear for several years now that the Twins would have been wise to take the two comp picks for Johan Santana instead of getting the grab bag of players they got from the Mets. Can't play the hindsight game, but you can learn from it. We've said for years that the Twins had little leverage as only a couple teams were involved in the trade discussions. These days, the comp picks are leverage in themselves.
  8. SD is on to something. Clearly this should be the first question: http://www.itinthed.com/wp-content/uploads/whaddayado.jpg
  9. Well I'm pretty sure that's why there were a lot of players who didn't want to ban "Greenies." We'd probably have to check with Ashbury to verify all things narcotic, but taking speed was what many guys felt they needed to stay focused and intense for a 162 game schedule.
  10. I'm sure they wanted to acknowledge Gardy in some way. It seemed like the logical choice for an award for him. Even if there was a player who was good with the media (and Brian Dozier is) Gardy has been the point man for the media for years simply because he has the (surely frustrating) honor of hosting post game interviews after every single game.
  11. It baffles me that year after year Scott Diamond continues to get awards. I don't think he's been deserving since 2012. Interestig to see Jim Kaat get the community service award. Is that area community service? Or is this award going to him for service in New York or where ever he is living these days? I'm curious because I'd think we'd see him around the ballpark or in the paper from time to time if he was back in these parts.
  12. Ha, you might want to scrap this whole interview. I don't think you're going to get many questions from the peanut gallery that won't make both you and St. Peter feel unbearably uncomfortable! My question: Why don't you tie the TF beer prices directly to the winning percentage. I'll gladly pay $7.50 if the winning percentage is the same, and you'd likely have sellouts when the team's record is 20 and 35 ($3.63 beer night!)
  13. Funny stuff about the Lovullo being updated on the Twins mlb.com page. That would have been a record by a mile for that site. It seems to me the newest articles on that site are generally two weeks old.
  14. Aside from Thomas, the only one of those guys I would not be depressed seeing start is Rios. His speed and power were down last year but he may still have a bounce back year. He's already had three or four bounce back years, you'd think he's an expert at it by now.
  15. I have those concerns also. I've never known a business owner to voluntarily embace a technology that makes them less money. General econimics would imply that something that makes the owners more money will dictate said money comes from the consumer, particularly if the new technology is going to negatively affect advertisers.
  16. I'm not sure about the payroll disparity between 24th and 30th, but to your last point, yes I'd agree there is virtually no difference between Morales and molasses.
  17. I want to see Guerra retained, I'm still waiting for the payoff form the Santana trade.
  18. While there are plenty of stations nobody watches, it seems a la carte subscritptions are going to cost a ton more, particularly for people of a diverse household. I may only watch a dozen or so different stations a year, but my wife and her reality TV watches a different dozen stations and the kids watch completely different stuff. No way this stuff will be cheaper.
  19. Not sure if you heard, but Gardy was fired. We may see a more modern baseball roster.
  20. His success in TB was definately starting to fade, but that often happens once high first round picks start to turn into low first round picks. Still, he made some very nice trades and was innovative with his method of extending young players. It was always a gamble to extend 21-year-olds, but he understood that the future dollars were much less than what he was handing out in today's dollars. I do like a front office that is creative and agressive.
  21. Probably, but then that means they aren't taking offense seriously.
  22. I wonder how this pesimistic attitude translates during manager interviews. Quite well I'm sure. If they are going to refrain from spending the extra $40 million or so on free agents because they want to play the young guys, it seems the obvious answer as to how not alienate the fans is to declare that the savings is going toward lowering TF beer prices to $2.50 a brew.
  23. The fair thing to do would be to take out the high and low outliers. Sadly there isn't a low outlier because there were multiple terrible free agents.
  24. I don't think anyone has a problem with Steinbach. Most of us think this team needs a different perspective after 30 years of trying to play 1980's baseball. We have doubts that keeping the same personell will significantly change philosophy. I think many of us think Molitor, Steinbach and most of the crew are more than capable baseball coaches and managers, but perhaps they just aren't a fit for a club that needs drastic and dynamic change.
