  1. And that Michael Cuddyer was a super utility player.
  2. Good stuff Parker. One other thing that sticks out to me in the videos: He looks thinner in the later. Perhaps white is just more slimming than grey, (I know jack about fashion but I thought black was the "thinning" color) but he looks like he's in better shape in 2014. Not only is it logical to think that improved conditioning could help his game, but a concerted effort to get in shape usually indicates a concerted effort to better oneself in all stations of life, possibly including a more intense focus on his occupation.
  3. I love these kinds of lists. Mostly because I like to pick apart these kinds of lists. I always find it funny that people makes lists based on what they consider faulty perception, then use their own subjective perception for the evaluation. Is Kyle Seager really underappreciated? As far as I can remember, he was considered one of the best 3B last year by just about everybody and the Mariners just gave him a huge extension buying out his arb years. Legares was given a Gold Glove last year, seems to me that shows a great deal of appreciation. And in what world is Ben Zobrist not known as one of the best all round players in the game? Sure my mom doesn't know who he is, but everybody who follows baseball does.
  4. That seems like too many 30-year-olds to me. It's only a 25-man roster and it looks like they're going to have at least 10 players over 30, probably only a coule will be 25 or under. It would be different if the 30-year-olds were Mauer, Perkins and even Duensing, a few organizational guys who the club wanted to build around, but a majority of the 30-year-olds are new to the team. You don't normally see that from rebuilding clubs. I think it might work out, but this isn't rebuilding. Ten veterans is a hell of a lot different than zero, there is some middle ground.
  5. If the Twins can get out from under the three additional years of Nolasco, I'd certainly listen. This team isn't rebuilding as it currently stands, they have way too many 30-year-olds. They seem to be doing the "restocking" bit, though that generally is only done by winning teams that want to keep their momentum and large market teams that can more easily absorb bad contracts. I'd also listen on Milone. His talent looks to be very minimal and I really don't want the siren sound that all lefties seem to have to enchant this team. There is better upside just about everywhere you look though I worry his soft-tossed whispers will put a spell on someone who ought to know better.
  6. I'm against the PED users getting inot the HOF, but if anyone is voting that way based on the "morales" clause, I'd have no problem if they decided to up and revoke Griffith's membership. Man, he was like the worst parts of Carl Pohlad and Marge Schott combined. I'm not a Carl Pohlad fan, but even I feel guilty saying his name in the same breath as Griffith.
  7. Yeah it sucks. Those picks are reserved for small market or small revenue clubs like St. Louis.
  8. I prefer a "baseball guy" to run the organization too, but even if we use MacPhail as the template, there might be issues in what we consider a "baseball guy." As far as I can tell, the MacPhail clan's only on-field experience is Andy's stint playing DIII ball. He got started in the business because of his dad, who got into the business because of his dad. Patriarch, Larry, was a lawyer who bought a minor league team for what seems like just a hobby. If we're being critical (and I'm really just playing devil's advocate) the only reason anyone would think of the MacPhail's as baseball people is because of generations of nepotism started by a rich lawyer who went to law school with Branch Rickey (who would also then not be a "baseball guy"?) So along those lines, would Bill Smith's kids automatically be considered "baseball guys?"
  9. Agreed. He's a natural on TV also. Thankfully for those of us who still prefer reading he didn't succumb to the dark side.
  10. There is only four years left on Mauer's contract. I don't think we're going to have to worry about him blocking Minier and Diaz should it come to that.
  11. That's funny, because if one only watched him when he pitched against the Twins, it would be the other way around.
  12. I'll listen when I get a chance, but I have to say I'm a litle disappointed. From the title of the thread, I thought Terry Ryan went on an uncharacteristic rant against Souhan.
  13. I agree with those drumming up his BB abilities. He hit well but didn't walk much at the MLB level but was pretty good at getting on base in the minors. A switch hitter with power potential will stick around for a long time if he can get on base, even if can only (barely) play 1B and his average drops. A guy like that who can't walk will flame out in no time however.
  14. I have to say, no matter how one feels about the job St. Peter does and the oft ill-timed comments, he certainly is a friend of TD. It's great he's granted more face time.
  15. Great, so now we have to pick multiple days?!
  16. I think Pudge has more whispers of PED's than Piazza since Canseco wrote in his book that he personally injected him with steroids. We can believe it or not, but that's more than whispers. Also, when everyone was waiting to see who the 103 players would be on the Mitchell report, Pudge acted like he assumed he would be named. It turned out he wasn't, but many writers were reporting the way he acted when asked those questions might as well have been an admittance. He might get in, in fact more than Bonds and Clemmons, he might be the one guy who breaks the PED glass ceiling as he was both revered and respected, but I think it's quite likely that anyone who played for those Ranger teams will be blackballed for the time being.
  17. April 16th vs the Royals. It's the 9th game of the year and it's a day game. About the perfect time for the team to give Hicksie his first break from batting .190.
  18. I always liked minor league singings, next to no risk. On the other hand, there are lots of power arms in the pipeline, too much AAA filler could block legit MLB arms from getting promotions to Rochester. I don't see that happening here though. There has been a lot of effort to draft power arms for the pen recently, I think they finally realized their importance and won't let a guy like Boyer block them.
  19. OK velocity but disapointing K rate. If you can't strike batters out with men on base, you shouldn't be in the pen. The team already has better options, I think he's a long shot to get more than some fill-in time at the majors in 2015.
  20. I don't think that's a big issue any more. Perhaps Johnson isn't quite on Griffey's level, but Maddox surely is and he didn't get the spotlight to himself.
  21. Pretty good haul for the HOF this year. Any voter who complains about not getting enough players in AND voted for PED players should probably give up their votes though. Like it or not, voters with any reasonable statistical skill are going to realize that players aren't going to get 75% of the voters to forgive their PED use. You want Trammel, Raines, McGriff or Mussina in? Don't waste your vote on the PED guys who have no chance of getting in. They can make a political statement advocating for PED users, or they can do all they can to get their favorite borderline guys in, they can't do both and be taken seriously.
  22. With the logjam, getting four in is actually surprising. After all, the more viable candidates there are, the more the votes will get split up.
  23. Everyone should notice that Seth listed the 99.999% for Meyer for 2014. It might have been an oversight, but that number sounded pretty close to accurate this time last year too.
  24. This team is too old to be considered a rebuilding team.
  25. I was a Michael Restovich guy. Hunter and Jones were established in the OF with Restovich, Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel and Brian Buchanon the options for RF. I was backing the worst of the possible horses it seems.
