  1. It's not the money, it's the roster spots. I don't care about signings, I care that the best players for now and/or the future won't or perhaps already haven't gotten on to the field because of these long term deals. If Hughes or Santana pitched as poorly as they have and had Pelfrey's contract they'd already be in the pen, traded or DFA'd.
  2. I originally wanted to roll with the youngsters, that's what I wanted. Ryan went out and bogged down the roster with unmovable bloated contracts to vets. I truely hope Ryan does want to move forward with youngsters, he still gets a D in my book for handicapping the process with tons of aging and declining vets. It's another reason I say he's indecisive. He wants a team full of experince, yet also doesn't want to trade away the prospects. He seems to struggle commiting to one path or the other. You could combine the youth and experience, but not very well if most of your experience is on long term deals.
  3. The handsome soda, Chris Colabello
  4. I haven't seen anyone mention what Hicks' injury is? I didn't see the game, what's going on with him? Also, Daniel Norris is way overrated from my view. A 91 MPH fastball and a mere 2.59 K/BB rate in the minors? That's the kind of stuff that tends to get results in the minors that major leaguers just laugh at. Toronto knew what they were doing.
  5. Aside from May's botched BP experience, I think Pressly was by far the 2nd best option in the pen this year. Edit: I feel confident enough after looking at the stats that I will strike this part from my statement.
  6. I'm sure they do. However I also feel they may be too far into the forest to see the trees as well. I think the front office views the gulf between the unproven players and the veterans as much larger than it actually is. I mean the guys in the minors would have to pitch to historically bad levels to be much worse than what the current bullpen is doing.
  7. I'm not sure why it should be assumed that anyone who wants a new GM hates Ryan. I also don't believe that people who want to see Mauer replaced hate Mauer. Subjectivity needs to be removed from most business decision, heck personal ones too. If your favorite band is Judas Priest it's OK for you to still acknowledge that the Beatles are the most important band ever.
  8. Yes, finding a star is remote with the Rule V, however is that the bar to set? Shouldn't the goal simply to upgrade either now or the future? Even with last night, Graham has yet to be the worst guy in the bullpen one time this year, and before he got hurt, Pressly was the only guy aside from Perkins that I had any interest in keeping. Neither guy is exciting, but I'd rather have them than the rest of the circus.
  9. The median leaguewide K/9 has risen by 14.5% since the first decade of this century, meanwhile the median HR/9 rate has dropped by 6.5%. Offenses are more willing to take a strikeout while trying for HRs which are no longer as common. Yet the Twins pitchers K rates are declining AND they are giving up more HR meaning they aren't taking advantage of the free outs. Baseball has changed, the Twins didn't change with it.
  10. I would like to add another issue. While it has barely come into play lately due to all the poor starts, the 100 pitch rule still seems to be in effect. The bullpen needed a rest and Pelfrey had been pitching pretty well all things considered. Why the hell was he pulled after 5 1/3 just so O'Rourke could pitch to the bottom of the Yankee order? I say just start bringing up the hard throwers, who cares how they've been pitching in AA or AAA. See if you can catch lightning in a bottle as there is a lot more margin for error when you throw hard and can miss bats. Besides, the results could not be any worse than what they are currently getting. Are Meyer, Burdi and Chargois likely to get torched? Yes. Are Achter, Duensing and Fein likely to get torched? Still yes.
  11. I don't think you really want Anthony, he's still young enough that he could hold onto the job for a long time. I've always thought Ryan was too indecisive, and the last time that he was put under this much pressure he balked when it came to making decisions regarding the extensions of Hunter and Santana, and soon after stepped down which intentionally or not allowed him to avoid similar extension decisions of Mauer and Morneau. I'd bet he will strongly consider walking away again, or taking a different job within the organization this off season. I find it pretty hard to imagine that he's been enjoying his job much lately.
  12. And the youngest of the bunch is 29-years-old. Maybe it was getting rid of the PEDs, maybe it was getting rid of the "greenies" maybe it's just pure Darwinism, but this is clearly a young man's game. The overwhelming odds show that you want players who are on their first contract. If you don't have enough internal young players who can help, it seems one of the best alternatives for getting them is by signing free agent vets to tradable 1-2 year contracts. It's not even about the money, that's six freakin' spots on the 25 man that are inflexible, and in most of their cases there's no real solution other than cutting them, and that's not happening.
  13. Why? Seems MN pitchers always strain their necks in NY.
  14. Might be a cultural thing. Is a Canadian chicken as dissimilar to regular chicken in the same way Canadian bacon as very sadly not bacon?
  15. Why does Dick continue to make a big deal about Graham being a Rule V guy? He has four times the experience O'Rourke has.
  16. Wow, I think Suzuki's pitch framing has improved?
  17. Man, let's sign that guy who is 9-for-19. That would be a revelation right about now!
  18. I would think the poor results compared to other clubs is largely due to the fact that other clubs are often able to make the batter walk back to the dugout with his bat in his hand after an 0-2 count. This team has to find a way to get outs without putting the ball into put into play. Also looking at some random stats, it does look like there are quite a few other teams that see more Yankee batters per game than the Twins (39.25), however only Detroit is allowing more HR per contest to the Yankees (Twins HR/game 2.0). However last year the Twins did only give up 4 HR in 7 games to these clowns. I wouldn't have guessed that, though seems fair to assume A-Rod would have hit four more himself had he not been suspended.
  19. I'm not sure that he's cooked, but I'm pretty sure that this team could not handle another un-cuttable 4 year albatross contract if he is. I've said it before, it's not the money that's the issue, it's the length of the contracts and the roster spots they are taking up that is the problem. The team needs more flexibility with all the young guys they need to audition.
  20. Nunez isn't good, but he never was considered the long term answer. He's a stopgap in a season in a nosedive so I'm not too concerned. I of the opinion that his decision to throw to first may have been the result of him knowing the run would score and the game was over, however getting the out at first would save him from getting dinged with an error. Pessimistic? Yes. Accurate? We will never know.
  21. Glen Perkins says no. Though I hope no decisions are run through Perkins at this point. With the extreme catching woes this team currently has, he really should be given another chance should his health permit it, even if previously the team had silently taken that option off of the table.
  22. Very interesting monthly splits. Clearly something happened in June, BABIP sure wouldn't explain the one time spike in BB% and dip in K%. Just playing assumptions, his approach changed in June. It sure looks like someone told him that he needs to start taking more pitches, which as a weak hitting middle infielder is something that likely seemed like common sense. It looks like the numbers reverted closer to previous levels after June. So what does that mean? In the first part of the year he was swinging at everything, in June he swung at nothing but in doing so he started to learn to wait for better pitches to hit? Could all just be a fluke, but at least it's a fluke in a positive direction.
  23. Seems to me, most modern closers fall into one of three catagories. The kind that miss bats until the day they hang up the glove (rare these days, but Billy Wagner for example) the kind that start to lose the ability to miss bats but figure out how to get outs other ways (Trevor Hoffman, Jon Papelbon) and the guys who start to lose the ability to miss bats and ride out the rest of their career on a series of rebounds and busts (Francisco Cordero, Jose Valverde, Troy Percival). Perk looks almost certainly to be in one of the later two catagories. As he tends to have pretty good control, one would hope that he can learn to pitch to his limitations, but there is a long history of pitchers flaming out once their velocity leaves them.
  24. Every year Perk's strikeount numbers plummet in the 2nd half. Even if in past years he has held on to his other attributes, his diminishing strikeouts were bound to become a problem. This isn't new. If there's anything we can take away from this, it's to trade him come the deadline next year after he regains his value.
  25. I can't speak for other nights, but his opponent probably had a lot to do with this. The Yankees are a flyball team and are among the leaders in lowest GB%; with their ballpark, this is obviously by design. Gibson's sinker likely will have little impact on these uppercut swings. Still, it's best to go after them instead of nibbling and loading the bases with free passes. Another sinkerballer, Pelfrey is going tonight, could be more of the same. A team full of veterans who will foul a half dozen pitches off if you can't make them swing and miss really highlights the problems your club faces when you can't strike batters out.
