Revisiting Realmuto as a Twins Trade Target
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’d guess it means they already know Realmuto won’t sign one and they’d lose leverage if he was forced to flat out tell a team it was never going to be an option while they control him. -
Twins Sign Left-Handed Pitcher Martin Perez
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was watching that chat and agreed until he threw Pomeranz out there. Pomeranz isn't any good either, at that point it sounded like he just had preferences between two terrible options and was disappointed that the Twins chose death by fire instead of death by drowning. Surely he could have found a better example than Pomeranz to support his view. -
Keys to 2019: Rocco's Modern Managing
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins can still play Buxton the majority of the season, it doesn't mean he has to be the focal point and the key cog in the machine. Steve Lobardozzi wasn't either of those things and he played near every day batting about where Buxton will to start the year too. You should build up your team with potential, you shouldn't build your team around potential. Build it around known commodities; if you don't have enough of that, you're work isn't done. This team's work isn't done yet. Buxton should be an after-thought at this time and if he comes out of his shell, a wonderful surprise that maybe can be built around at a later date.- 19 replies

I'd think they'd be more concerned about no longer being the primary television market for Santa Clara. San Jose too as it neighbors Santa Clara and is the largest city in the Bay Area. Oakland gets the east side of the bay, San Francisco gets the stuff to the south. Or at least I'm guessing that's how they see it.
-
I'm not comfortable making accusations, but things sure are shaping up as if the owners are collectively planning ahead for CBA negotiations. None of the big teams are jumping the cap threshold any more, and it's starting to look like all of the mid to lower revenue teams are staying in their lanes as far as market size and expected revenue/salary figures go. I mean wow, here's the current projected payrolls: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/ That lines up really closely to market size with the White Sox exceedingly low position being the only significant outlier (Ugh, Harper and Machado?) Looks to me like the teams are trying to establish base lines for lower salary caps and/or salary floor. I'd like a salary cap similar to every other pro league which the MLBPA would oppose, but the MLBPA absolutely should push for a salary floor, and a significant one, say $140M? If the owners push back with having a salary cap then they should push that floor figure higher somewhere within $40M of the cap the owners want, which should be no lower than it is now, with mandatory increases as revenue goes up.

Twins Sign Left-Handed Pitcher Martin Perez
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, I don't want Perez and a sinker heavy approach anywhere near this team. I am slightly intrigued due to the Kyle Gibson similarities. Also, I was looking through recent Texas starters for comps for guys who have left the team. There aren't many because the Rangers are awful at developing pitchers, but Derek Holland had the same silly sinker reliance. Now two years removed from Texas, just like Gibson, he upped his four-seamer and slider usage in the right counts and he turned into a real pitcher who can actually get outs all on his own. But if that's not the plan for Perez, dump him early. -
Keys to 2019: Rocco's Modern Managing
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm excited for Baldelli. I'm not excited that people keep implying that Buxton and/or Sano are the keys to success. There are lots of ways to win baseball games, I don't like the idea that we're pinning everything on one unproven young player. Just build the best team you can and if he contributes great, if he doesn't, deal with it and MOVE ON, he's just one out of 24 players on the roster.- 19 replies

I think Austin's strikeout issues are going to be too much to overcome; I think the fans would grow frustrated in very short order. His 2016 MiLB numbers show that he could draw a lot of walks and get on base, but he hasn't been able to replicate that at any level since. Even more so than the power, I think that would be the only avenue for him to compensate for the strikeouts. Well aside from actually cutting down on the strikeouts.

Twins Daily 2019 Top Prospects: 16-20
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Celestino is supposed to develop power? He looks very slight but he's young I guess. If he's supposed to develop good power I'm in.- 47 replies

Holland interests me no more than John Axford, Brad Boxberger, Tyler Clippard, Jake Diekman, Daniel Hudson, Ryan Madson, Bud Norris, Sergio Romo, Tony Sipp, Nick Vincent or Adam Warren. Also, I think Edwin Jackson and Wade Miley are going to look good in a bullpen once they're committed to staying there. Some of those guys have less interest to me than others, but Holland falls toward the bottom of that list as well. Also, the invaluable Zach Duke is still available. So I guess he needs to be on the list.
-
I doubt it would have gone over any better had Duke been traded for a a bag of cash or a PTBNL. He was a LOOGY, those guys have no value. There are still about a dozen better relievers than Holland out there. They just don’t have as big of a name.

Keith Law Top 100 - no love for Graterol
nicksaviking replied to SydneyTwinsFan's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If memory serves, you were a Turner guy? Kudos if so. Yeah Turner probably got hurt by prospect fatigue, where as Gordon got bumped by lineage excitement. -
Keith Law Top 100 - no love for Graterol
nicksaviking replied to SydneyTwinsFan's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I don’t agree with Klaw’s ranking of Graterol or Tatis over Guerrero, but he has always given guys who look certain to stick at shortstop extra favor and short right handed starters big demerits. I’ll disagree but he’s consistent, maybe stubbornly so. Predictable even, and that’s fine. -
I agree. My point is that 32-33 year old Kyle Gibson isn’t likely to be as good as 30-year-old Gibson was either. If we want to replace the production of Kyle Gibson at his peak, it shouldn’t be with Kyle Gibson post-peak. I don’t care if he’s extended, but if/when he declines people are going to want to get that production back. And if we’re complaining about salary now, having a $13M per year liability isn’t going to make things easier.

Well I’d think a 32-33 year old Kyle Gibson probably would be replaced by a Gio Gonzalez or Clay Buchholtz type.

It might not easily be replaceable, but he’s 31 so it’s also not likely sustainable. This team is most likely going to lose the good Kyle Gibson to age if not free agency.

If this team isn't going to sign free agents past one year I don't see why it would matter if these guys got paid toward the peak of their value. I'd do Berrios and Rosario now if they're willing, though they may not be. So far the others haven't shown they can be consistently productive. Gibson's different, he's too old. I wouldn't be upset about an extension, but I wouldn't be expecting him to be productive past another year or so. Still, this team isn't going to have any salary issues so dead money contracts aren't going to hurt. Also, Trevor May is currently very inexpensive at $900K and a free agent after 2020. Giving him a significant pay increase (relative to current earnings) over the next couple of years might convince him to be bought out of a couple free agent years. Just a dark horse extension candidate as he'd be rather painless.

Revisiting Realmuto as a Twins Trade Target
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect Garver to catch way more games than Castro this year. -
And surrounded by tons of people who still view pitcher success based on ERA and Wins. I had written Stewart off a couple of years ago and even after last year when he did get called up I thought it was nice but still put no stock into him being a piece of the future. I'm going to reopen that door though. Despite Ryan Pressly's gushing to the contrary, what Stewart described sounded quite a bit how Charlie Morton described how Houston dealt with the minutia in getting their pitchers to maximize their pitches in the right moments to the right batters. It also sounds like what the Twins did to get Kyle Gibson to discover himself.

Revisiting Realmuto as a Twins Trade Target
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think he was referring to a hypothetical situation. I agree, stud pitchers aren't available currently. It's hard to count on teams rebuilding in the offseason, some GMs and owners just don't see their teams in the same light as the rest of the league. But my money is that the Mets pitchers will be available this July. They've made some moves but that team looks like they are primed for disappointment. Perhaps that's based on little other than them hiring an agent to be their GM, but my spidey sense tells me it's a team fated for dysfunction. -
Revisiting Realmuto as a Twins Trade Target
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mauer, Posey and Lucroy all seemed to take a nosedive in their age 31 season. I'd bet that Realmuto is still decent for a couple more years, but I agree, I wouldn't want to pick up the check for his free agent contract or extension when he gets there. -
It certainly would make a nice impression with the new Pensacola affiliate. Being young and high top end talent, surely as per usual, Kirriloff and Lewis will be among the first re-assigned. I wonder if Rooker will get a longer look. There's a bit of a logjam ahead of him, but he appears much closer to being a legit consideration.

I don't think the Twins have much for 1B/3B depth in the upper minors. Vargas was finally set free and Austin is out of options. Tyler Motter, Brock Stassi, Gregorio Petit , Jordan Pacheco, Jermaine Curtis and Chris Carter were let go last year. Those spots are pretty bleak in Rochester currently. If I thought this would in any way lead to a shot at making the 25-man or block Brent Rooker, I'd be fairly upset, but I don't think it will, they just need some bodies for the corner bases.

Revisiting Realmuto as a Twins Trade Target
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well as I said above, if I'm trading top prospects, I want a great hitter, not a guy who's a good hitter for a catcher. I don't care about the position, find the best offensive talent and make it work. Realmuto is a good, not great offensive force. He's topped an .800 OPS once, his best season last year would have been at the low end of Mauer's and Posey's peak years. He's not elite, he only looks that way because the position is nearly an offensive black hole in today's game. With how everyone had starry eyes with the Brewers trade for Yelich last year despite them not needing an outfielder, I'd think that would be the model people would be most interested in. -

I don't know about "established". He's only been an All Star once. His career OPS is lower than the largely maligned CJ Cron.
