    If you mean Dobnak, Thorpe and Smeltzer, I'm Ok if they're discouraged. If/when fully healthy, the Twins should have Berrios, Maeda, Odorizzi, Pineda, Hill, Bailey and Chacin (iif he's still around) plus the Dobnak/Thorpe/Smeltzer crew. They're missing a Kershaw obviously, but it looks like they are building their staff similar to the Dodgers. They should be able to shuttle any or all of those starters to the pen for a stretch to keep them fresh, and they're a long way from being forced to use a Dobnak in game three of the post season.

    Maeda was put in the bullpen because the Dodgers had more starters than than they had spots for and Maeda's wipeout slider will play up in a relief roll. I like Maeda as I'm a big proponent of strikeouts. If others more fancy ERA, I'd ask, would you trade Fernando Romero or Stephen Gonsavles for Maeda?

    I have always really liked Graterol, but my red flags about him have been up all off season when Lavine were interviewed by Park discussing the internal options for the #5 rotation spot and the candidates listed were only Dobnak, Thorpe and Smeltzer. Good luck to him, but I had already moved Balazovic ahead of him on my internal pitching rankings as I'd already begun to think the organization doesn't see Graterol in the same light that I had.

    I could stretch my definition of the word interesting to include Taijuan Walker, and Danny Salazar may get a solid, "Hmmmm OK". Everyone else I see on the free agent list probably earns an "Eh, let's just hand the job to Thorpe instead" from me.

    I kind of get the feeling that my definition of the word "interesting" is going to be different than Dan Hayes'.

    I also heard him say on Hot Stove that he does NOT enjoy DH'ing. He said he likes playing in the field as much as he likes hitting and he doesn't feel like he's playing if he's not always moving his legs and running around. So if he doesn't want to DH, that should be a good motivating factor for him to be the best defensive 1B that he's capable of. Also, he was a fantastic interview, you could tell how much effort he's put in to communicating in a second language. Hopefully the effort he's made in that area is indicative of the effort he's been putting into continuing his on field improvements.

    Kent Hrbek OPS'd .934 in his age 27 season and he got a World Series ring. I only ask for our new 1B to match that.

    Man, his last two full season, Donaldson has walked 100 times. I mean, Polanco, Sano, Kepler and Cruz are excellent at working a count and drawing a free pass, but Donaldson is in a completely different conversation when it comes to that skill. I don't "love" walks, but it always seems like to me, the guys who are able to do it at an elite level are basically slump-proof.

    I still think this team tries to get starting pitching and as they’re at a record payroll and even at arbitration value or team friendly contract prices, starting pitchers ain’t free. I’m predicting Rosario and his contract are being shopped to offset that hypothetical pitching.

    Also in 2017: Home OPS: .812 Road OPS: .834 I have no doubt they were cheating, and I'm not against any or all possible penalties for them, but I don't know that we can draw any definitive conclusions as to what degree the cheating helped. Which if the cheating didn't actually help, getting busted for it and penalized for it makes me smile even more.

    $5M is the max a team can be penalized according to MLB's own bylaws. And they can't take away player's salaries, that would be against the CBA, and likely completely illegal.

    Well I like that Morrison accused a former team of cheating in the Yankees, but not the Twins even though he would have had knowledge if the Twins did. Kind of puts me at ease that the Twins won't get caught up in this. But I'm skeptical of Morrison's claims. Sounds like Carlos Beltran squealed like a pig and the Houston system was pretty much all his and Cora's doing, neither of whom was in Houston in 2014, a team that lost 92 games by the way. Morrison's stuff kind of just sounds like office rumors, which tend to originate from wish-fulfillment, jealousy and excuses.

    I'd call up Alex Bregman's agent and see if he wants to win a legit WS and if so, he should demand a trade to the Twins. Also, they should do this while Houston doesn't have a GM and they have a bunch of interns running the show. I'd generously offer to absorb Carlos Correa's hefty arbitration figures as part of the deal as well so Houston can get to rebuilding properly.

    Yeah in 2020 $14M for a 1B/DH type isn't going to be terribly far from a ceiling. If he played SS that'd be another thing.

    If Rich Hill is healthy and as effective as he’s been the past four years, he’s hands down the Game 1 starter as it stands now.

    Interesting stuff. My main thoughts: -The Twins supposed offer sounds like it’s much higher than original projections for a Donaldson this off season but Donaldson’s camp is valuing him about 80% higher than those projections. -If the Twins won’t budge off of “assigned value” how will they ever get an “impact” pitcher? Those guys don’t sign for “assigned values”.

    Whether they openly say they didn't meet their free agency goals or not, they'll probably have to wait until Donaldson officially is off the table, even though they clearly didn't meet their goals considering Donaldson isn't a pitcher. I want them to move on with trades, but that also probably requires a Donaldson decision as well. Because if by some miracle Donaldson does sign, it wouldn't preclude the Twins from still trading for pitching, but it may impact who the Twins are willing to part with as a guy like Rosario and his arbitration pay and Sano and his lessened positional relevance may be more tolerable for the Twins to move.

    I don't think the problem isn't that no one wants to play here, it's that they have other destinations they have their eyes already on. But as far as the NFL goes, they have a salary cap and salary floor, players can't be as particular where they go. But I think equally as important, the Midwest is not significantly behind other regions in producing football or basketball players. It's why the Big 10 is competitive in football and basketball, but they're always a doormat when it comes to baseball. The Pac 12, SEC and ACC kick their butt every time, I don't think it's a coincidence that those are the same regions the pro players also tend to lean towards.

    I tend to think Ryu chose Toronto because they gave him the best offer; with his injury history I'd find it quite likely that no other clubs, including the Twins, were willing to match the years they gave him. But if he did happen choose Toronto in part because of non-monetary reasons, I might think their indoor stadium may have played as big or bigger role than whatever we are using to measure the size of various city's Korean communities.

    If Berrios could pitch in the 2nd half as he does in the 1st half, he'd probably already be close enough to an ace for us all to be happy. When I think of pitchers fading in the 2nd half, I tend to assume they are tiring, which was always a concern with his size, but he's not losing velocity as the summer goes on so I'm encouraged that this is not an issue and correction is possible.

    Another similarity; the Dodgers haven’t won the WS in 30 years either. The Dodgers have been consistently good for quite awhile, but I’ll guess their fans are equally as frustrated with their FO for never making that big move to put them over the top.

    No interest in Boyd, I think he’s not fit to be a starting pitcher. I’d rather roll with Dobnak or Thorpe. And I don’t want to roll with those two either. I’d take Sale, but if the Sox want salary relief I think the prospects going back may be too high. After Archer’s last season I kind of think even Rooker is too much, but I’d still do Archer even if that’s what it took. I’d take Syndergaard, but I don’t think he’s available.
