Easy, but not effectively. I'm anything but a Terry Ryan apologist, but he was good at grabbing other team's cast off relievers. This front office has had a terrible success rate with that, while conversely having good success with the starter-turned-relief arms already in the system. I'd like them to stop throwing away money and more importantly roster spots on guys who can't be optioned.

Like others, I'm also not interested Angel bats. Unless we're talking Mike Trout, all the Angels have are complementary pieces, which is pretty much what the Twins offense is already. Trade for a difference maker bat or start promoting the prospects. Stop with the half measures. Even less interested in Tyler Anderson and pretending his early season smoke and mirrors success is anything more than an aberration. Come the trade deadline, I put ZERO stock in what guys have done in a measly three months this season, I'm looking at track record. Also no on relievers. They're too flakey and winners or losers based on small sample sizes. This front office strikes out on other team's relievers just about every time. Only guys I'd be interested in are Patrick Sandoval and Reid Detmers, both of whom have been terrible this year, but FIP says they've had bad luck. Both look like they could be pretty decent starters and both might need a change of scenery.

No kidding. We always hear the offseason free agent talking points from fans (not just Twins fans) that all you have to do is offer the most money to get a player. Some guys, sure, but not all. Plenty of places I'd have no interest in moving to, even for a raise.

A starter with good command and at least three pitches. I used to worry about velocity, but the Twins continue to show they can bump it up a few MPH once the guy is in the system. So Whitney is my favorite out of this group.

I wouldn't have an 'untouchable' tier, but he'd be ahead of Lee for me. Possibly by quite a bit. His offensive ceiling is just so much higher from the looks of it. I'm also excited for Jenkins, but Rodriguez is doing exactly what we can only hope Jenkins will be doing. I know people give Lee extra points for playing SS, but barring injury, he won't be playing there at the majors. Meanwhile Rodriguez has a clear path to CF. And again, that offense. His production trajectory through the age 21 season, including the improving strikeout and batted ball numbers looks like Gunnar Henderson's. Except for Rodriguez's vastly superior on base skills.

Reed was a big part of that resurgent 2002 team that finally made it back to the payoffs, but he never did endear himself to Twins fans. I remember seeing this quote awhile back here on TD thinking it was kind of funny; “I wish I could’ve ended my career in New York. When I was traded, I was torn up. I can say it now that I’m not playing. That’s how much we loved New York. Did I compete when I went to Minnesota? Absolutely. But there’s no place like New York.” He may not have said those specific words while he was playing, but everybody KNEW he didn't want to be here. I remember him being surly and aloof and every fan, announcer, reporter and even Gardenhire seemingly implying that he didn't' want to be here. It also didn't help that the Twins traded Matt Lawton for him, who by 2001 had become the de facto offensive veteran face of the franchise.

This offseason, the Twins emphasized the position's defensive side and signed Carlos Santana. Going to have to disagree with this part. They didn't emphasize defense, they emphasized thriftiness and Santana just happened to be more glove than bat.

I'm actually not surprised. The Twins have been putting quality young hitters on the field regularly the last three years. When they give them a chance. -
Cleveland may be a playoff team, but they're not a legit WS contender. Great bullpen, but too many holes in the lineup. And unless the previously unknown 32-year-old Ben Lively has blossomed into a full season stud, they don't have the horses at the front of the rotation. I like the Twins rotation better, but mostly they're in the same boat. Still, I'm not afraid of Cleveland winning the division simply because I don't care about winning the division. Neither team appears to be a championship caliber team, but if one were to transform into one, I guess I'd put my money on Ryan and Lopez becoming the horses needed to win it all over Bibee and Lively.

I want the starter. I've seen what this team thinks qualifies as a middle of the order bat and it'd probably be someone like 60-year-old Starling Marte.

I'd give him some leash, but I'm not holding tightly to anyone who doesn't look like they are an above average player. As for the guys I wouldn't sweat removing from the 40-man: Margot, Farmer then the relievers in this order, Boushley, Funderburk, Winder, Theilbar (ducks), Henriquez and Okert (his numbers look fine, but he isn't good). Obviously you don't ditch all the relievers, but any of those guys would make sense. And controversial take, I'm good removing Severino. I don't see a scenario where his strikeouts will ever allow him to be usable at the MLB level. I'd remove Vazquez for Camargo but obviously you need a backup catcher so there's no logic in removing him just for the sake of clearing 40-man space. Note, as much as I disliked the Carlos Santana signing and think little of his performance going forward, I'd keep him over these guys.

I can find a half dozen guys I would gladly remove from the 40-man. These guys are no better than what's floating around on the DFA front and have lower ceilings than the guys waiting to be promoted. You don't lose anything by calling up a guy like Keirsey and seeing him flop because Margot is already a flop. The front office really needs to get over this hang-up.

His career caught just the beginning of the era of offensive explosion. Had he started and ended his career a half decade later, he might have been the DH to break the HOF barrier. His OPS really took off in the second half of his career. I always hated that late century Yankee dynasty, but I still was happy to see Davis win. I always thought of him fondly. Kind of like the Dusty Baker situation with the Astros I suppose.

I was looking to move the lower ceiling, but still exciting Lee for Miami pitching this past off season, I'm still on board. Maybe you'd still need to, but Festa is the guy I'd look to flip now at what is possibly peak value. I know he's been great, but I don't feel confident in the Twins fixing a starting pitcher with command issues. I don't think this front office has ever done that. Miami has done well with these types of pitchers however.

No, fans tend to value the prospects more than teams do and teams value controllable MLB contributors more than fans do.

And salary caps going through the roof, this won't in any way be a burden. In two years, Jefferson probably won't even be top 5 in WR salaries. I hope Lamb tries to top it, because Dallas on the other hand CAN'T afford it.

I'm not opposed to sending Julien down to catch his breath. I'm opposed to rostering Farmer. And Vazquez. And Margot. This was an easy opportunity to rip off the band aid.

So my question is, if the front office deems Julien is the guy to get sent down, how do they deem that Baldelli was justified in batting him leadoff up until a week ago?

1988 Topps and the Minnesota Twins
nicksaviking commented on Al from SoDak's blog entry in Al from SoDak
Fond memories of theses cards. I remember opening a pack before school stoked to find Kirby Puckett. An older kid at school asked check them out to see what I got and the Puckett card mysteriously disappeared. I had (still have) more than one, but I still wonder which federal penitentiary that kid resides at these days.- 4 comments

Yeah, there are a handful of relievers that are having issues with inherited runners. -
For sure, and I'm willing. As to the second part, that's where I'm leery. He's put up great numbers, but that command doesn't seem to have developed. I'm nowhere close to writing him off, far from it, but I'll be holding my breath when he comes up. I'd hate to see 5-6 walks per outing and the fans and the rest of the league recognizes it as an uncurbable wart.
