  1. The tighter purse strings were a surprise this year, and then they got their TV money late in the offseason after there were no good free agents left to spend on. I think the odds of them expanding the payroll are lower than 50/50, but I'm not writing it off completely. A deep playoff run surely wouldn't hurt next year's TV negotiations, and after last year, surely they know starting pitching is the best bet to get there.
  2. The Rangers had a loaded roster last season, how were they a surprise champion? The lineup was stacked and they traded for Scherzer and Montgomery at the deadline. They were on everyone's radar. And AZ ran out of gas and got toasted in the World Series. They would have had to win four series against superior teams; they got close, but as expected didn't pull it off. Anything DOESN'T happen just by making the playoffs. The best team doesn't always or even usually win, but ONE of the best four or five teams pretty much always does. The goal needs to be one of the favorites, not just a scrappy underdog who got a ticket in.
  3. Agreed. If the Pohlad's are willing to re-open the wallet, Eovaldi seems like he could be a playoff starter. No interest in Lorenzen. He's always been a smoke-and-mirrors pitcher, I don't want him anywhere near the mound come October. And if the Twins need him just to get to the playoffs, then this team isn't a legit contender anyway. Andrew Heaney wasn't mentioned, but didn't the Twins try to sign him a couple years back?
  4. I'm disgusted by this country's toxic super capitalism, but it doesn't happen every time. His contact is for 4.8M, 800K of which was already paid as a signing bonus. An NFL team withholding 4M in in today's market would be worse for them than paying it. It's peanuts to these owners; the good-will alone would be worth more than 4M. The only reason they wouldn't pay is for salary cap reasons, but I'm sure they could work something out easy enough where they cancel the contract and just cut a check. So yeah, feel free to be heartless about corporate USA, but not because they won't pay, but because they may be doing it for the wrong reasons. But again, the Vikings keep getting top marks for how they treat their players, there's no reason to think the Wilfs won't realize the Vikings make 4M every other day from the franchise and think it's the right thing to do.
  5. Not sure what they'll get, but the Vikings keep getting top ranks for how they treat their players. I'd bet on them to do some degree of right by the family. But you're right, hardly the point at this time.
  6. I didn't like the Santana signing, but I'll be happy for him to continue to prove me wrong. But garbage titles like this is what is wrong with discourse in our society. Not enough people are willing to change their opinion on a topic despite evidence elsewise anymore. A certain demographic will NEVER admit they were wrong about something, but condescending finger waiving only makes the people who may be open to change, double down on their positions harder, it doesn't bring them around to see your side.
  7. Doesn't much matter which order you get the wins in. Except when it comes to claiming fan interest. The TV situation is brutal, but even when fans could watch them, slow starts were always bad for season-long attendance; they might want to figure that out one of these years.
  8. Raise the ceiling, not the floor. This sounds like a trade just for the sake of making a trade.
  9. Awful news, such a young guy.
  10. I think teams have gotten much more adept at realizing the difference in value in improving the 'floor' as opposed to improving the 'ceiling' of their teams. A guy like this likely only minimally improves the team more than a waiver claim guy like Caleb Boushley or whatever the Brewers have floating around AAA and AA. Adding someone you could stick at the top of your rotation is still going to cost a pretty penny I'd think.
  11. I like Waller, but the Twins are good at developing this type of player. If they can package him for high upside starting pitching, I do it. Doesn’t have to be him, but I’m not saying no if he’s what is asked for.
  12. Most of the Cubs rotation is filled with guys who despite being lesser known, may have the upside to be a top of the rotation arm. Some are currently injured but none sound serious. They have a couple bigger name guys too I guess. Obviously not getting Imanaga. Anyway, they have more starters than they need considering how terrible they are.
  13. It's definitely trying to be more experimental with it's episodes this year, so the folks who were most into the drama are likely turned off somewhat. But it's season three, even if it was great, the backlash was predictable in today's TV world. Season 1: A few people find a great new show and tell everyone they know about it. Season 2: It starts to build a sizable following and everyone awaits the next season. Season 3: The reviewers and original fans get resentful because they liked when only they were analyzing and talking about the show, and it's way more popular to be a contrarian than to be the last person to think a show is still fun. I'm not saying there's not criticism to be had, but if Breaking Bad season three was playing right now, people would be jumping ship in fear of being accused of being passé.
  14. I really like Joe Ryan, and I'm not anticipating a dramatic 2nd half fade this year. But I still really want another playoff starter. Not a Carl Pavano or Ervin Santana or Michael Pineda; a guy this team knows isn't a post season ace but is willing to settle for to squeak out a playoff berth. I want an actual strikeout-capable, high-upside starter who when you put him on the mound against Max Scherzer or Gerrit Cole you think, OK, maybe we have a reasonable shot here. If Joe Ryan is that too, all the better. I'm not expecting to get another guy like that, but that's what the goal should be.
  15. I don't follow Kornheiser's math. The question was who was the best player to never win a championship, not get to the playoffs. Only one team wins it each year, all things being equal, the odds are the same. Which actually is inaccurate. There are more teams now than their used to be. It would have been easier for Ernie Banks battling only 15 other teams than it is for Mike Trout fighting against 29.
  16. I failed in that regard, none of my kids have any interest in watching, it's a huge bummer. I'd blame MLB and the Twins for their terrible TV situation and inept marketing, but my kids aren't interested in watching any sports. Not sure what happened, I watched every and anything ESPN had to offer back when I was their age.
  17. Yeah, my kids are older now and mostly do their own bedtimes, but I remember how frustrating that was. Growing up, it seemed most Twins games started ASAP after the local news, but I could be remembering that wrong.
  18. Still you're not wrong. West Coast teams COULD start an hour earlier, and on Saturdays many hours earlier, but it's a pretty solid competitive advantage not to. Seems to me the Mariners and Angels are the West Coast teams that NEVER do Saturday day games for traveling time-zoners, even though Saturday day games are pretty common.
  19. The D-Backs didn't win the World Series, the loaded Rangers team won in 5 games, and that's the problem. The underdog D-Backs would have had to win FOUR series against significantly more talented teams to win it all. I am beyond tired of the Twins doing just enough to get to the playoffs knowing they'll just about every time be the underdog. Get in and cross our fingers. They've largely done this the entire century and it has not worked. Last year was such a refreshing change of pace where while they weren't a favorite, they were good enough to get picked by some analysts to win it and they were at least a favorite over Toronto. The Twins need to improve the number of players with top end talent, not add more average players, or they're just going to be doing more of what hasn't worked for years.
  20. We don't know which team will win the World Series each year, but I bet at the start of every post season we can accurately pick the 4-5 teams that have the talent to actually have a shot. All 12 teams do not have a reasonable chance at winning.
  21. The Twins have had a good relationship with Boras recently, but who Lewis' agent is really isn't an issue and I think people need to stop using Boras as an excuse if something doesn't come to fruition. Boras works for Lewis, does anyone really think he'll force Lewis to do something or accept something that Lewis doesn't want? If Lewis wants to bet on himself and play out his contract, or the Twins don't want to pay him market value, that's on the player and the team. On the other hand, if Lewis wants to be here and is willing to structure a deal in a way to accommodate the Twins current payroll situation, Boras isn't going to tell him, "Tough luck, you're going to New York whether you like it or not."
  22. I'm saying token playoff appearances do nothing for me. Theo Estrada and Graham Ashcroft may make it more likely that the team makes the playoffs but they don't make it more likely they'll win the World Series. If they aren't or can't trade for actual difference makers, call up the prospects instead of these non-impact trade suggestions. Even if there's only a slim chance those prospects turn out to be elite, at least there is a chance. I would rather try to win the World Series and end up missing the playoffs than try to make the playoffs knowing my team has no shot at winning it all.
  23. If they aren't good enough to get into the playoffs without these low-key trade targets, they sure as hell aren't good enough to win a World Series. If the goal is only to make the playoffs, they need new leaders who will set the bar higher.
  24. I'd be interested in Finnegan or Harvey, but I just don't see what the rest of these kinds of players accomplish. None of these guys, even the good relievers, make the Twins a World Series contender and isn't that what it's all about? The Twins have a roster chalk full of guys who are decent but not superb players I don't see why they need more. Unless the goal is simply to be a first round underdog again, they need to replace the current middling players with BETTER players. They need high upside swings. Either trade for a stud or someone who has stud potential, or roll the dice with the prospects who may have less likelihood of being that difference maker, but none the less at least have A chance.
  25. I don't think he got screwed over, an agent wouldn't do anything that his client doesn't want. I also don't think it's the owners, I think it's the GMs. The elite free agents are still getting paid, but the front offices have started to realize that paying for good-not-great free agents isn't worth it any longer.
