  1. I am not suggesting Gonsalves has to have super control, if he has a walk rate around 3 bb/9 innings with his stuff that is fine with me. I was just saying he might want to improve a little so the Twins don't mess with him like they are doing with Berrios and Santiago. If Gonsalves improves on his own he won't need the "corrective" coaching of the Twins MLB staff.
  2. Biggest thing for Berrios is to just r e l a x. Once he did that in Rochester he was back to his dominant self. He has the stuff and command, if he isn't amped up. We all know he is a hard worker and wants to do well, he just has to "do" it. I don't know if pitching in the bullpen will help, it might though especially if Berrios can get a clean inning or two. Obviously I am not suggesting on turning Berrios into a reliever, but have him in the bullpen until he's got the confidence in himself to start. I mean it worked for Johan Santana and Fransico Liriano it could work for Berrios too.
  3. Another great start for Gonsalves. His ERA is now down to 1.78(!). Now, I really think Gonsalves could be a really good pitcher. But for this year he needs to finish in AA, because he needs to improve his control. His last 3 starts have shown some of his control issues as his balls/strike ratio isn't where it should be. It'd be good for Gonsalves to work on control in the off season as we've seen how the Twins staff "fixes" pitchers with questionable control (Hector Santiago, Jose Berrios). Let Gonsalves start next year in Rochester and then go from there.
  4. I am more concerned Neil Allen can't develop prospects than coaching veteran pitchers like Santiago. Berrios isn't just struggling he looks bad all together and Tyler Duffey looks less and less like a quality starting pitcher. A quality pitching coach you'd think could be able to get better results from a prospect like Berrios. I mean it's not like Berrios is a typical mid to back end of the rotation prospect. Allen seems as inept as Rick Anderson in developing starting pitchers.
  5. Another solid start for Romero. Honestly he should be in AA by the start of next season. I think he could be called up to Chattanooga this year, but with the season coming to a close soon for the minor leagues and Romero getting closer to what ever innings limit he may have there is no need to promote him this year.
  6. Do you think Thorpe will pitch any winter baseball in Australia to get him ready for next season? Not to pitch for 2 years with his repartore doesn't sound like a good idea especially with him feeling comfortable with his curve and slider.
  7. I don't mind Stewart, but how the Twins have developed Stewart bothers me. Out of high school Stewart was seen as a power arm with a power repetoire of a mid 90's fast ball, slider, curve, and developing change. Instead of nurturing this the Twins introduced the sinker as Stewart's out pitch. Now unless Stewart is to have a power sinker ala Kevin Brown, Brandon Webb, or Carlos Zambrano there is no reason for Stewart to use a sinker. I don't think making Stewart the next Kyle Gibson, Carlos Silva, Derek Lowe, Aaron Cook, or Jake Westbrooke is a smart decision by the Twins. It's like the Twins were worried power pircher Stewart might have some bumps in the minors so the had Stewart develop the sinker to get "easy" ground outs. For a pitcher who's out pitch is the sinker either you are hittable, have low k numbers, and rely on the defense behind you, or you can have a power sinker that is un hittable with higher strike out totals, but your shoulder may give out by your 5th year in the bigs. I just wish the Twins molded Stewart into the power pitcher we hoped he'd be when he was drafted, not some ground ball inducing sinker ball pitcher.
  8. This!! Love the kid, but like you said on his own admission he knows he's got some work to do. If he spends extra time in the minors to work on his mechanics and control he might be a monster when get gets here. I'm just willing to be paitent, I really want to see him succeed.
  9. Also from what I've heard from post game recaps recently is that he has been able to trust his breaking pitches (curve and slider) a lot more this year even though his fastball and change command hasn't been where he wants it. If I remember right MLB scouts wanted to see more from Gonsalves curve/slider and it looks like Gonsalves has responded.
  10. 16 of Gonsalves walks in AA came in 3 starts. In Gonsalves 7 other starts he walked 12. In the 3 starts he walked 4, 5, and 7 batters. In other words he has improved his walk rate.
  11. I don't mind Gonsalves ending this year in AA to help him improve his control. But you are absolutely right, there is no reason Gonsalves shouldn't start next year in Rochester.
  12. I'd get rid of Milone, Plouffe, and Santiago at season's end. And Gibson looks to be a decent trade piece at some time next season. With a pitcher like Gibson who could be slightly better, it's best to sell high as there is more talent that should work their way into the majors next year (Gonsalves, Mejia, Stewart).
  13. So yeah, in his 3 August starts Gonsalves has an ERA of 0.00. While I love what he is doing I am fine keeping him in AA for the rest of this season if anything to help him improve on his control/command because he won't have as much challenge with AAA hitters as many of them are either washed up MLB vets or struggling MLB youngsters (see Byron Buxton) who may have less plate discipline than they should have. Honestly if Gonsalves doesn't start in AAA next year there is something wrong. It also seems this year Gonsalves has had a lot of success with his curve and slider this year leading me to believe that he has improved those pitches a lot this year. I'm excited to see him with the big league team next year.
  14. Fun fact...in all 3 August starts Stephen Gonsalves has pitched 21 innings given up 1 run and no earned runs meaning his August ERA so far is 0.00. Wow...
  15. And oddly enough Gonsalves looks far better in AA than Berrios did initially. In 2014 for New Britian Berrios went 3-4 in 8 starts with a 3.54 ERA and only 28 strike outs in 40 innings. I honestly expected Gonsalves to "struggle" like that, but instead he has gone from an A+ call up to the ace of the staff in Chattanooga in 10 starts. He HAS to be better than what his scouting report said at the beginning of this year. Of course he still has to work on his control. But if that is really all that is keeping him from the majors he defiantly might be even better than we imagined even going into this season.
  16. Romero has pitched about half the innings Gonsalves has. I believe in fact his 77 innings pitched is a career high for him with him literally out for almost two seasons. But his stuff sounds down right over powering. Had Romero not had TJ and knee surgery he might be an even better prospect, but with his injuries his development has been delayed. I feel the more he can work on getting his pitches better and attacking the batter more the better he will be. We will have to see how next year stacks up, I'm hoping he's up for the challenge.
  17. Agreed! As of now IMO, Romero has a higher ceiling than Gonsalves or even Jose Berrios at this point. I believe as long as health isn't an issue Romero could be a bonafide ace. His stuff is amazing, plus the command and control are already great. I look forward to see how much progress he makes next year.
  18. I really can't wait to see what Gonsalves can do in the majors. I doubt we will see him this year, but I expect we will see him at sometime next year. Honestly, judging by his rapid adaptation from A+ to AA ball (he has transitioned way better than even Jose Berrios did in 2014), I think Gonsalves will have some rough times adjusting, but he has everything going for him to adjust quicker. I mean to be fair Berrios even in the minors could be homer prone if he didn't have command of his pitches. Gonsalves? His career high for homers given up in a season is 4(!). Shoot in his first 3 starts in Ft Myers he gave up 2 of his 3 homers this season. Plus Gonsalves strikes opponents out just as well as Berrios.
  19. From everything I have heard about Romero I have to believe that based on potential Romero is our top pitching prospect. All he needs is to improve his secondary pitches and continue to learn how to pitch (keep in mind he only has like 160 or so career innings pitched). He sounds like a completely over powering pitcher with his upper 90's fastball, upper 80's to low 90's breaking ball and an improving change up.
  20. It might seem real aggressive but I would consider calling up Stephen Gonsalves. He has been the best starting pitcher in the minors this year and in AA his ERA is a minescule 2.01. Plus at 115 innings pitched he has plenty of innings to go this season.
  21. If I remember right even in the minors Hendricks averaged around 6.5 k/per 9, plus Gonsalves careers ERA is very low for any minor league pitcher at 2.17, so there has to be something more than him being left handed or just a good minor league pitcher. Plus Gonsalves career k rate is as good as Berrios' k rate.
  22. I have to think that the emergence of Kepler has taken some of the load off of Mauer. I don't know, maybe Mauer isn't pressing too hard or with a potent bat or two in the line up it is taking some pressure off of Joe allowing him to get back and play the best way he knows how.
  23. Agreed. Gonsalves should finish this season in Chattanooga. Now when next year comes around we will have to see how he pitches in spring training. If he shows even better control then yeah, he should start the year in Rochester. Just my $0.02...
