  1. I disagree, just look at Jose Berrios. Stud starter until this year and mysteriously the Twins can't translate Berrios' top tier talent into a top tier starting pitcher. It'll be the same when Stewart, Jay, Gonsalves, and Romero come up to the bigs. Pathetic, really...
  2. Rotation for 2017? Well the Twins need to part ways with Ricky Nolasco and Tommy Milone for sure. That leaves us with Ervin Santana, Tyler Duffey, Kyle Gibson, and Phil Hughes. If Berrios is not on the opening day roster next year something is terribly wrong with the Twins organization. Personally I would trade Gibson next year unless he becomes a great pitcher this year (which I doubt will happen), so that opens another spot in the rotation. So our 2017 opening day rotation should look like this: Santana, Gibson, Berrios, Duffey, and Hughes. I'd expect Jason Wheeler and DJ Bexendale will be early season "fillers" if a Twins pitcher gets hurt or traded (most likely Gibson) with Kohl Stewart or Stephen Gonsalves pitchers most likely to make the September call ups next year.
  3. I agree with the article. It really seems there is a HUGE lack of accountability on this team from Jim Pohlad all the way to the scouting department. How a team can be this terrible and unapologetic about the failure is beyond me. I agree we have a stacked minor league system, but we don't have any coaches at the big league level that can finalize the potential of the Twins prospects. A few failures I can expect, but for practically every prospect failing (or falling short of potential) as a Twin since 2009 is outrageous. For example, if Jose Berrios ends up as a failure or on the low end of his potential that is on the Twins and their inability to properly develop top tier talent (same goes for Buxton and Sano IMO).
  4. I agree about Romero. I think if he stays healthy he has more upside than any starter prospects right now. As long as Romero improves and adjusts well in each level of the minors he may be a bonafide ace prospect.
  5. Understandable. In my opinion with him overpowering A ball hitters it would be good to send Romero to Ft Myers, but then again he had what 3 starts in '14 so they might need to see more of what he can do. If healthy next year I think Romero could challenge how fast he gets promoted, especially if he dominates other levels like he is doing now. Upper 90's fastball and low 90's slider, sheesh if he develops right he could have a higher ceiling than Berrios, Stewart, Gonsalves, Jay, or Thorpe. My concern is Romero throws the slider so hard it might take it's toll on him.
  6. Great starts for Jay and Romero. On the topic of Romero, what would be his timeline to be promoted to Ft Meyers. It's not like Romero is in Ceder Rapids because he has not pitched well, he is there now due to injuries that kept him out since 2014. I think he could be a pitcher they move through the ranks more aggressively due to the fact injuries are his only issue this far.
  7. I agree on Jay, he looks to be as good if not better than advertised. I think Jay will end up as a higher ranked starting pitching prospect than even Gonsalves, eventually. Don't get me wrong, Kohl Stewart has pretty much done all that has been asked of him, I just don't see a huge improvement from last year to this year. And if Gonsalves' fastball is clocked as fast as 97, he might still have even more potential than most Twins brass might see.
  8. Well despite the loss Gonsalves dominated his last start, went 7, gave up 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), no walks and 8 k's. Is he going to be promoted after the FSL All Star break? Not to hate on Stewart, but Gonsalves has been much better than Stewart has been in every minor league stop thus far. I might be in the minority, but as of right now Gonsalves is a better prospect than Stewart.
  9. That's kinda depressing. With Berrios regressing, Kohl Stewart not progressing that much, and Stephen Gonsalves "hitting a wall" of sorts, I felt Thorpe returning this year would be a plus. Now, even if Thorpe remains with the Twins the earliest debut he would have is probably 2021ish. And who knows if he'll ever make it all the way back.
  10. Just wondering, has Lewis Thorpe been pitching recently. Last I herd he was pulled from EST because he felt tightness in his pitching shoulder. I am anticipating his return a bit.
  11. I hope so. The track record for the Twins starting pitching is horrible. The last pitcher the Twins drafted who panned out well was...Brad Radke. Look at the starters who have failed since then: Fransisco Liriano, Matt Garza, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Liam Hendricks, Kyle Gibson (jury is still out on him). You'd think at least one of these guys could develop into a good MLB starting pitcher.
  12. One important thing for me is a GM who has player development as a high priority. The Twins have far too many prospects, especially starting pitchers who do well in the minors and fail miserably. Since the Twins won't ever sign an ace, they need to fully develop a pitcher who can meet those credentials. Also with player development, when you have a top talent (see Buxton) you actually develop him more thourghly so he is ready to take on Major League pitching.
  13. It helps that the Twins absolutely SUCK at developing starting pitching. If they could have coached up/developed Berrios better he'd still be with the Twins. Same goes with Meyer. Until the Twins can develop starters from the minors better we are stuck with this junk.
  14. With such limited options for replacing Nolasco, its my guess we are stuck with him for most of the season. IF the Twins actually coached and developed Berrios right he may not have the control/command issues he has now. Or they could have helped Berrios FIX his issues he has had this season. Not surprising from one of the worst teams in terms of developing starting pitchers. After Berrios you have Meyer, Milone, and Jason Wheeler in AAA. And our best pitching prospects after that are in A+ ball (Stewart, Gonsalves, Jay, and Felix Jorge). So in short the Twins don't have any one to replace Nolasco.
  15. So disappointing to see Gonsalves and Berrios struggle so much. I mean since we can't just go out and buy an ace it would be GREAT if we could have a highly touted pitching prospect ACUTUALLY turn out. I mean then in reality who do we have that can be a potential staff ace if not Berrios or Gonsalves? Kohl Stewart? Well strike outs are not as much as his first few starts of the season. Tyler Jay? Maybe, but at the same time it is not known for sure if Jay can remain a starter. Lewis Thorpe? Well most of the questions on Thorpe will be answered next year since if healthy ge should get a whole season to pitch. Bottom line, Berrios and Gonsalves right now represent the Twins best hopes for a near top to top of the rotation starter. If they fail, the rest of the higher ranked pitching prospects have as more questions yet to be answered than Berrios and Gonsalves.
  16. Personally I question the over all coaching, especially the pitching coaching from the minors up to the majors. I mean I get Jose Berrios was going to struggle, what I didn't expect was for him to suck that bad. I just question whether he has truly been coached up to improve his command at the minors or if he is just getting away fooling AAA hitting (since a good deal of AAA hitters are failed prospects or simply MLB filler players). Or you could look at Stephen Gonsalves (2nd best pitching prospect behind Berrios), he has improved a bit, but still struggles with control and has a hard time getting into the 7th innings of games he starts, and finally there is Kohl Stewart, started the year out strong, looked to be a better strike out power pitcher and while he has done well he has tailed off in K's and while he looks like a good pitcher, he does not resemble the ace we hoped he would be when we drafted him. If we have a better collective pitching coaching staff from rookie ball to the majors perhaps some of our prospects can actually make it when the get to the bigs, just like St Louis.
  17. The only issue I have is how is Berrios going to learn how to pitch with better control when he will be facing mostly washed up or underperforming bums of AAA. For all we know Berrios really hasn't learned great controls because he might be getting away with getting AAA hitters easily swinging at pitches of his out of the strike zone.
  18. I guess the season is so poor that I might overreact to something like Berrios poor start because a prospect like him is SUPPOSED to be a bright spot, not another problem. I just want to state that I WANT Jose Berrios to succeed, not just because he has looked the part of a successful pitcher on the mound, but because he seems hungry and really seems to try so hard to succeed.
  19. Well, I have to admit even as a fan of Berrios I am feeling negative towards how good he can be. I mean okay he has only 4 MLB starts, but after 4 starts last year Tyler Duffey showed real promise and improvement, Berrios has shown some glimpses of improvement but has yet to have that one game where everything comes together. Why? Berrios supposedly is as competitive as Duffey with a better pitch selection as Duffey and has been praised for his work ethic. So why is Berrios pitching so scared? Damn, I wanted to see him pitch the rest of the season, but at best he probably won't be back until the end of July. Dang, because we need an ace and he was (or is) the closest we can have as an ace (if we look at his potential). What has gone so wrong? I expected struggles, not a 10.70 ERA.
  20. I see Gonsalves is slated to make another start for Fort Meyer's. Why? After his last start he should have been promoted to Chattanooga. I mean he only has a 1.21 ERA. Why do the Twins not want to promote Gonsalves? He has absolutely nothing left to prove in A+ ball. Since Gonsalves was drafted the Twins have been real weak in promoting him as it always seems Gonsalves spends far too long in every minor league affiliate thus far.
  21. Great game for Jay!! I think though he will spend more time in Fort Meyer's simply because this is his first year starting and I feel that the Twins want to see Jay become more consistent as a starter. Also if it wasn't for the fact Jay will likely see an innings limit this year (for obvious reason) Jay might be sent to Chattanooga. Oh well he'll be there at the start of next season.
  22. Plus for a 21 year old in his 1st time in the bigs he doesn't have the "deer in the headlights" look either in post game interviews or during the game. Once he adjusts better to MLB hitters he will be good. Plus it is well documented since his earliest days in the minors that he is a workaholic and works so hard to perfect his craft, even his big league teammates see that work ethic. Talent gets you so far, hard work seals the deal.
  23. I think Berrios will pan out just fine for the Twins. He has done well in spots, but has yet to get it all together. Berrios is only 21, and only has 3 starts in the bigs. He doesn't seem to have the timidness of other past prospects (Kyle Gibson, Liam Hendricks, ect), and has the pitch selection of a high end prospect. Next in line after Berrios it will be interesting to see how Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Tyler Jay, and Lewis Thorpe fare as they get closer to their MLB call-up.
  24. Oh I agree and believe Duffey and Berrios will pitch well. I definitely don't want to see either pitcher being demoted, especially if they give the team the best chance to win.
  25. I'm guessing Duffey and Berrios will battle for Milone's spot until Gibson comes off the DL and the winner stays in Minnesota and the loser goes back to Rochester. If both Duffey and Berrios pitch well when Gibson comes back, then I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins move Nolasco to free up that rotation spot for the other youngster.
