Front Page: Who is the Twins Team MVP?
ewen21 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, and I have done the sorts with his fielding stats. The most putouts he made in a game was nine and that was the game where he was injured and we lost anyway. It should also be noted he had 73 complete games this year and in 20 of them he made one putout or less. That's the thing with outfield defense. A player often doesn't get the opportunity to show their stuff, meanwhile he's taking four at bats in those games. Defense matters but it can't matter as much as the offensive aspect of the game given the number of chances a player has defensively compared to offensively. In the field you aren't assured the opportunity to make plays but you will get your at bats- 51 replies

Front Page: Who is the Twins Team MVP?
ewen21 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Take his last five appearances. The Twins won all five games, but he was only a late inning defensive replacement and had no impact whatsoever. Until we get anecdotal and actually point out instances where he saved runs in tight games and changed the outcome I find those numbers dubious- 51 replies

How can a guy who played in about half the games this year warrant any consideration?- 51 replies

I cannot rip Rocco or Falvey and Levine. I have some friends who are doing just that and I don't get it Although I have to say this..... Did Rocco pull this lineup out of a hat or something??- 83 replies

Falvey and Levine are basically in their first year as far as I am concerned. They finally were able to choose "their guy" to manage. The fact that Pohlad HAD TO have Molitor handcuffed them.- 83 replies

Front Page: We Want New York, Twins Postseason Edition
ewen21 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No metric measures the intimidation factor but watching this team play in NY (specifically in the playoffs over the years) there is no denying they play like they aren't expecting to win. Different teams with different players have gone in there and it is the same things each time. Until this team can actually prove this time is different I can't ignore the history -
Front Page: We Want New York, Twins Postseason Edition
ewen21 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I cannot get around the fact that we have lost the last 13 games we've played against them in the playoffs. For that reason color me a hardened skeptic -
Circumstances dictate actions. If we are playing Wrigley you want him playing the same way? He might die if he didn't learn to adapt. I don't like the idea that he doesn't need to change. What he is right now really isn't all that impactful. He's played in about 40% of the games over the last two seasons. Playing the way he has resulted in 115 games in two seasons isn't the ticket. Not for a guy who was 24 and 25 years old during those seasons.

The real numbers on Buxton for me are as follows: 46 92 140 28 87 Those would be the number of games he's played each season with the Twins. We can throw away the first one since he was called in June that season, but the last two are like big red flags. To call to question his style of play and inability to stay on the field because he keeps crashing into things (walls mostly) is no longer anything that can be called "negativity" I wholeheartedly disagree with anyone who feels "he has to play this way". No he does not have to play the field like he has and YES he needs to absolutely modify his game. Just as Eddie Rosario needs to learn how to take more professional at bats, Buxton needs to learn how to keep himself on the field. I think there was a tendency here to act as if he were more than human. He isn't. He is made of the same things we all are and this idea that he needs to change nothing because he is so awesome really makes no sense to me. None. He provides no value to us now and it is the by-product of him (once again) crashing into a wall.

This was the kind of thing discussed in the thread about Rosario posted last week. As much as I have liked Eddie (I would take him over Buxton any day), he has things to work on and he provided. This is the kind of at bat that should give him very low marks in plate discipline. If the coaches are worth their salt they must address this kind of thing.

Front Page: Twins Need Rosario to Rein it In
ewen21 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This right here is what I am talking about. I think almost every avid Twins fan I know feels this way. And I wouldn't call this "complaining" I don't get this "we must be positive" stuff. We are in first place and it's a beautiful thing. There are always things to improve. That's how I view things in my own life and I don't view it as being "negative" Quite the contrary -
Front Page: Twins Need Rosario to Rein it In
ewen21 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What? Are we only to discuss the shiny happy things and leave it at that? Rosario is a good player and the original poster would acknowledge that, but why shouldn't he learn to go up there with a plan sometimes? What exactly is did the original poster say that was out of hand? I don't see this kind of analysis as "complaining". It is a discussion about a good player who can be a little better if he sharpened up a few things. The assessment offered by the original poster was accurate and fair so I am not sure what the problem is -
It's often worse. Look. I think the guy is actually a good pitcher. I have to qualify these comments with that, but like you say the pitch count thing is hard to take. He pitches at such a slow pace sometimes, too. It is just so darn hard watching him sometimes. He could give up a run in five innings, but if he is on pitch 100 as he walks off the mound after five innings that isn't a successful outing to me.
-
I agree and furthermore... Why are we itching to extend Buxton? Is it because of his potential? How long do we talk about potential while this guy keeps landing on the disabled list? In five seasons he has thus far played over 100 games once. Like you say, he has 4 more years to go until free agency so we have plenty of time. Quite frankly, I would have dealt him and Lewis for Noah Syndergaard if the Mets would have done it. I am afraid we are going to see a lot of what we are seeing now with Buxton. Over time, if he doesn't tweak his defensive approach to be more discerning and responsible, this will only get worse. This is not me being negative. It is a realistic forecast. No less realistic than the "positive" forecasts people feel must be made. I wouldn't bet on him long term. It is tough to say that but I cannot ignore the red flags
-
Odorizzi has been frustrating. He's actually a good pitcher, but he is up to 100 pitches in the 5th inning most of the time and we can't live with that. It's the kind of thing that kills bullpens

Front Page: The Hazy Future of Fernando Romero
ewen21 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
THIS in nearly every single case. I think this organization has failed to view prospects properly. That narrative Terry Ryan used to spew about "mortgaging the future" was, is and always shall be a crock. If there is an area of weakness and a trade can be made for a pre-arbitration major league player then how in the world is that "mortgaging the future"? -
Front Page: Taking the Twins to the Gridiron

Gibson as a linebacker? He has the aggression of a stoned giraffe! LOL -
Willie Mays and Jpe DiMaggio had superior defensive skills. Rarely--if ever--did they crash into things. I heard an old timer call in a radio show years ago and he said DiMaggio rarely ever dove for a ball. That's the thing. With Buxton's world class speed and touted "athleticism" he should make things look easy. He has crashed into walls on balls he had literally no chance of catching. The line drive Nelson Cruz smashed over the wall in Seattle is an example of this. I agree with you. Nothing ridiculous about getting this message across. If he keeps going like this (with his migraines and concussions mounting) he might be significantly slowed down or out of the league sooner than expected

Front Page: Buxton’s Body and Cave’s Opportunity
ewen21 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great outfielders don't get constantly injured trying to make plays. They make the plays and keep on playing Collisions are not what makes him a great fielder. His speed makes him a great fielder.- 39 replies

See, now this kind of talk really amounts to sour grapes. We were up 8-2 after 4 at home so the umpire should have no bearing on the outcome if our bullpen could pitch to under a 12.00 ERA the rest of the way

This takes me back to May 2002 at Yankee Stadium for the vibe of the game. The season is beginning to feel like 2001. I hope I'm wrong but it developing that kind of trajectory Go glass half full if you want, but the reality is this bullpen is becoming more and more exposed. At no time did I feel we were safe--even after we went up 8-2. We just don't have the arms right now. Don't know if one or two good arms can make up for the lack of depth. Rocco can keep reshuffling the deck but it is still the same card game.
