  1. I think the Twins only have one open spot on the 40-man, unless they do something with Capps. Valezquez and Walters took two of the three. Originally thought the Twins might be grabbing someone cut before the end of August. But there also will be some 40-man cuts in the next few days as teams add non-rosters players as September callups. Still surprised that we aren't getting Slama. And when do they expect to get a looksee at Guerra. Really, man, really...that should be a given. Manship, you know. Dozier, needs a rest and you know. I would've awarded Arcia!
  2. I think if Arcia got just one at bat and travelled with the team, it would be an experience that he would never forget. The big questions is how much money will the Twins spend on bench players. They could, conceivably, bring up Oliveros (and Gutierrez) and place them both on the 60-day, But they would have to be paid, freeing up other spots. Again, anyone going to Arizona won't be called up to wear a Twins uniform for two weeks. You could almost make a case for Dozier not to be called up because of his dismal Rochester stint and you know what he can do...give more tryout time to Florimon or Escobar (not to mention Casilla and Carroll). Not a big market for Casilla as he is still with the Twins, have to assume he went thru waivers and no one wanted to trade for him (even the Dodgers looking for a backup). The questions remain...is Capps worthwhile to give innings to this month. He will still cost the Twins a buyout to not resign him, which they shouldn't. And Span...if he isn't going to play, then let's look at others, and go ahead and put him on the 60-day and make the decision if you want to see Hicks and play Hicks and Parmelee. Also, what to do with Benson, could promote him and put him on the 60-day DL too. Sad that the Twins have all these disabled players that they might wish to look at, that you really are on a bubble for just outright cutting, because they might have some minor "prospect" worth in the next year. PROMOTE SLAMA!
  3. Lots of questions. Is Parmelee a cheaper alternative. How much first does Mauer play. Is Willingham suited to be the DH more in 2013 and especially 2014. Will you get something nice in a package for Morneau? Remember, you pretty much have to offer Morneau arbitration or let him walk as a free agent. If you trade him, you can always sign him back for less if there are few takers.
  4. Caleb, or anyone playing Arizona ball won't be added or called up, they would have to leave early. Walters and Pavano and Baker are on the 60-day. Capps and Span are on the 15-day. Before moving anyone else to the 60-day, they would have to fill the last two spots. I want to see Slama and Vasquez get a shot and some work. I would also like to see Guerra get a few innings. Perdomo and Manship might as well make the trip up, too. I would not activate Walters. We will have an influx of infielders if Escobar and Dozier are called up, but both should. Arcia should also get the call...just to soak in the moment. Give him this!
  5. I think they would replace the St. Paul Saints and not share the space. But another team in the Midwest League would have to fold or be purchased. I vote for St. Paul Only Child.
  6. And sometimes you just want the pitcher to quit throwing over and let the guy steal if he wants...getting the batter out is more important. Yes, you like to keep a "possible" double-play in order. But, how many of those 90 stolen bases resulted in a run scored is the next question in play.
  7. I'm unsure the wording of those extra three...an assist with the pitcher...were those pitch-outs? Noticed that Mauer is the only catcher with a bonafide pick-off of a runner on base.
  8. Mauer pitchers have a 5.21 ERA, Butera 3.61 and Doumit 4.92
  9. Sounds like it was something fun to do while watching the Twins play this year!
  10. Over at baseball reference they show Mauer (63) at 49/6, Doumit (48) at 23/6 and Butera (33) at 18/6 for (games played) attempts/caught. The team as a whole has thrown out 17% of base stealers. Starters are: Blackburn 5/1, Deduno 5/1, DeVries 2/1, Diamond 13/3, Duensing 4/1, Hendriks 5/2, Liriano 13/2, Marquis 2/1, Pavano 7/1, Walters 4/0, Swarzak 0/1. Relievers have been awful: Burnett 7/0, Burton 5/0, Capps 3/0, Fein 2/0, Gray 5/1, Maloney 2/0, Manship 1/0, Perdumo 1/0, Perkins 2/2, Robertson 2/1.
  11. Can't figure out why he overthru the other Monday. That was so uncharacteristic Mauer. Part of it ahs to be lack of consistent playing time behind the plate. The other, working with nearly a dozen different starters who, on the whole, are pitching from behind and not setting the pace of a game.
  12. That teams haven't stolen more is a reflection on his history...especially with the various starting pitchers.
  13. This makes absolutely no sense. No sense. And you can't 60-day a guy until the roster is at its 40-max. Picture Walters coming off and the Twins adding one player. If they are smart, they 60-day Capps, then add another. The 60-day Span and add one more (or just activate Capps and release him).
  14. Do you have to keep a Tommy John pitcher on your 40-man roster, or can you DFA and just keep him in the organization.
  15. There is always players out there, the 26th/27th, or 42st/42nd...and the joy is that they ARE talented. Just got pushed out because there is someone younger in the wings. Plus, they are hungry. The other thing Ryan is usually good at is jettisoning the player for a prospect.....something he might've done earlier for, say, Gray.
  16. The next day I seriously started to think Deduno would hit every player in the Rangers line-up...by accident.
  17. Lots of Valencia and Liriano jerseys for sale at reduced prices at the Minnesota State Fair!
  18. Diamond...you can wait another couple of years. Same with Ben revere right now, see what 2015 will look like. You might try Burton for 2-3 years. Unless he is the closer, he won't be an expensive free agent, especially if he has health issues next year. Plouffe is still cheap...it's more his call...what he wants to make in the next 2-3 years, or is he afraid he will be out. Pretty bad when the crop of this year's BEST Twins aren't crying out for long-term committments.
  19. Capps needs to be added to the 60-day. Not sure why Parmelee came up, though...unless Morneau and Mauer are being traded tonight!
  20. This is not working for the Rays. ... Every market is different. There isn't a hard and fast rule you can apply to new stadiums and attendance. As far as stadiums being 'empty' there are only a handful of ballparks that don't sell at least 50% of their seats each season. Typically it is Oakland, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Cleveland, Baltimore. I don't know what to think about Tampa -- sometimes I wonder if they wouldn't have mediocre attendance even if they had a new field (after the 1st year or two). I just wonder if there isn't something else going on in that market -- too many other entertainment options; too much outdoor fun, etc. Which is really too bad because the Rays seem to have a great organization. Demographics, average age in the community is about 79. They need more ground level seats. No, it is surprising. This should be one of the hottest teams in the market, and the Miami market should also be big. Can't quite figure this out. Lots of people in the general area with disposable income who live there and would like a ncie day in the park rather than spend time at a theme park.
  21. The Twins season ticket base will beep the attendance right around 28,000 for the rest of the season. No groups and no walk-up sales will happen. Most SMART people will buy unused stub-hub or grounds tickets for as low as a buck in September than pay full-price at a ticket window to sit high in the third deck, on the ends, in the Family section, or the sunshine of the outfield...where the available tickets thrive.
  22. The biggest pitching risk for a salary strapped team would be signing Pavano who can't throw right now, and Scott Baker, who doesn't know when he will throw well again. $5-10-15 million better sp-end elsewhere. Ryan is givign himself and the manager and coaches another year...then heads will roll. Be interesting to see how the Mauer things turns out.
  23. A team like Boston has has the potential to be a pennant contender and go to the World Series, which getting a ring seems to be every player's dream. They unloaded a couple of mistakes and will also rid themselves of the Ortiz overpaying at season's end, so they do have a lot of money to play with, and because they are a storied franchise can attract free agents, which the Twins can't becaase what do they really offer a player. Boston is also in the enviable position of actually being a loser this year and can claim players like Mauer. Before any corresponding competitive can. Does Joe take one for the team and move on, we all thanking him for his wonderful time. Or does he stay and his salary becomes an albatross as attendance continues to shrink and the ownership family doesn't see that you pay Joe outside of the annual team 50% salary cap because...he is Joe. Joe signed with the Twins because he wants to win...but it probably ain't going to happen as long as he is playing for the Twins. For $23 million a year, the Twins could get a nice first baseman and catcher and designated hitter.
  24. Carroll was brought in for his work ethics and ability to play backup, if need be. I think the Twins were oping he would be a .280 hitter rather than .240. Sometimes it helps to have that veteran on the field or in the bullpen. Especially if they are personable. Yes, helps more if you are competitive team....but an extra coach that plays ball for real...valuable. The Twins biggest challenge in 2012 -- why would someone want to come here and play? That is the question we need to ask when choosing who the Twins should target. One-year deals, less money to play on a legit contender to prove yourself a viable property would be just as good as playing for the Twins. If I was an average pitcher, my record would look better if the team scored runs.
  25. Why trade for Morneau, just wait a year for him to be a free agent. And Mauer, possible C/1B...you don't need Morneau. Waiting to see how Mauer does play out. When he signed with the Twins, he was thinking the team would stay and be competitive for his career. After next year, if the team can't arise above .500 ball, he might be welcoming a change. 3 top prospects and some also rans and The Twins would do it. Imagine what the Twins payroll would be in 2014 without Morneau, Mauer and Span around? Willingham your highest paid guy...followed by Doumit, and a bunch of newly crowned millionaires. Then we can talk about the Twins being...cheap.
