  1. The Twins were thinking about Thielbar. Duensing will shine if they keep him in the bullpen.
  2. I would think Swarzak would have some value for a team looking for that middle reliever who can eat innings. The Twins can't cut him without losing him. I would be exploring ANY trade options for the guy right now. The other issue: Who on the current 40-man roister is expendable. If the Twins needed to add someone, anyone, who would go. Roeinke, Wood? Butera or Herrmann? Do the Twins really need to keep Pressly (we will find out). There isn't a lot of chaf to cut and you either have to find a place for a Benson, Hicks, Arcia in the majors, perhaps, because you aren't waivering them off the roster. Even with names like Boggs, Ramierz, Caba in the background and worthy callups if someone goes down, they would still need a roster spot. That is where things get difficult. Hendriks, DeVries, Gibson are the abckup starters. You don't add Perdumo, Walters, Vasquez because there is no way to add them right now. Even Harden, if you choose to carry him, will need to find a 40-man spot. So that does put folks Like Swarzak, Butera, Florimon on the bubble (out of options) and will have the Twins taking hard looks at people like Burnet, Robertson and Escobar.
  3. Both teams are kinda in the same boat. No one standouts in the rotation. Still some offense issues. The Twins could still use a more top-of-the-line starter...someone who WILL pitch 200 innings...Carl Pavano two years ago. They could use someone with some punch in the outfield. Also, the infield has questions. Do they trade Morneau and start with Parmelee at first. Right now, the Twins big questions is defense with a lot of contact pitchers. And lineup construction...who leads off and gets on base. Who protects Maruer/Morneau/Willingham.
  4. Correia probably had a minutely higher first year base and an option/buyout for a second year. Or maybe two years at $4 and $5 million. We will never know. Quite simply, an agent has to say "we are mulling offers competitive to yours" and "willing to listen again if you modify your offer." Happened with Sanchez...who pushed up the Cubs to as high as they would go until the Cubs realized they were just increasing the cost the Tigers would play and they would never get him. Of course, if the Tigers passed, the Cubs would be stuck. But, my overall impression is that Ryan is looking at an ancient world when dealing with the free agent market this year, combined with his couple of lowend victories last year (Doumit, Willingham, and, in a sense, Zumaya and Marquis) and not wiling to blow anyone out of this world. I think he might've overpaid for Pelfrey for one year, who is going to pitch his heart out to get a multi-year deal in his next round. And then we have Francisco Liriano. Ho, in their right mind, would give a guy who might end up being a reliever a two-year deal. He's a headcase. He doesn't have to pitch next year. He doesn't have to pitch for two years (shades of Cristian Guzman). Sad that the Twins didn't offer up on Goz or Lannan, they could use another lefty. Saunders is still out there. Would like to see then at least add Myers at this point. We can only dream that Marcum would come here...but would the Twins offer 3-4 years...to carry over into the rebuilding era?
  5. C'mon, if the Twins could've signed Ortiz for $700,000 or so, hey would've. But he was arbitration to high for them with how he had played. Remember, most other teams passed on him, too. Dickey is a fluke. The Twins signed him twice. If they had talked with Hardy and struck a deal, he would still be here....but the Twins thought he'd be too expensive, too. And they had blinders over the Japanese superstar. Marquis was cut loose too soon. But basically he was a wash. He allowed us yo experience Cole DeVries and Perdumo. Garrett Jones had no palce, blocked by Morneau and all the Twins outfielders of the most recent era. The Pirates gave him a chance and he shined, but don't see him drawing demand and $$$ elsewhere. I'm totally surprised Liriano signed for $7 and two years. Too much to pay if you have to switch him to relief. Thought he would be lucky to get the $4 million with incentives for a year. I guess Pittsurgh is better than Miami or Houston, but the $-tight Pirates overpaid for him...and considering they though Correia was overpriced for them.
  6. Now he gets to bat!
  7. How come we don't know how much money the staff makes, even coaches. What is Terry Ryan paid, or Dave. St. Peter. What do the minor leagues cost to operate: personnel vs. real estate/equipment. hat is the true operational costs for tickets/sales, advertising, media. How much do the Twins generate in advertising revenue. What percentage comes from corporate sponsorships.
  8. You will lose just as many games with a $100 million payroll as a $30 million payroll. Will the Twins actually do better this year with a $75 million payroll?
  9. Tom Goz also signed for 2 years and 6 million. All that is left is Myers/Padilla, Saunders, Marcum maybe, Liriano/Pavano and Slowey. Could see a starting rotation of Liriano/Pavano/Slowey/Correia/Worley/Diamond with Blackburn in the wings. Should begood for 40 or so wins.,
  10. His value is as a catcher. He HAS to catcher a greater percentage of games. He can be another Yogi if he keeps his average up, wins another title or two...but he has to be recognized as one of the greater catchers. Right now, any play at DH at this stage (and the next 4-5 years) diminishes his chances. He can go in as a Twins icon if he plays beyond his current contract and gets those 20-years of same team service under his belt. Sorta the Ripken factor. But he could also fall into the Mattingly category. But it is always hard to ignore a lifetime .325 hitter with 15+ years of play.
  11. Right now, today, Willingham is at least as valuable as he will ever be. Will he be equally productive in 2013...where the Twins will be scrambling for a 1-2 hitter, Mauer won't be seeing any good pitches, and Willingham will have to at 4th to see a runner on base or probably lead off if he bats 5th or 6th consistently? Like Delmon Young, the Twins do need to consider offers when a guy is hotter than just hot, and not wait for them to be luke warm. Then you get the more distant prospect. Same with Morneau.
  12. We need a backup that can play centerfield. But, yes, Hermann would be the perfect third catcher to be the backup if you, say, played Benson in right and Parmelee took Justin's place at first (a position he would share, also, with Doumit and Mauer at times). This would free us up to, say, give Thome a ride as part-time DH and bench bat, if the Twins so desire, to add a bit of spark at target field. A bench of Herrmann, Benson, Carroll/Dozier/Florimon/or Escobar, Thome would be right fine by me.
  13. Neither is on the 40-man, so doubt that either will get a callup next year. See how they deal with pitch selection and fielding. Buxton got a little of the hard minor league life and Eliz and will do more of the same at Cedar Rapids. Unless he tears up A ball and moves to High-A and tears that up, he'll be putting in his time...hopefully returning to Ft. Myers and it's everyday play and state of the art conditioning facilities for the latter part of the year. Sano still has issues...maturity, weight, language, fielding skills. He should get all that at Ft. Myers and if an injury happens in AA ball, he'll move up if he can play everyday and face harder pitching. Picture both starting 2014 in the minors if they don't need to be added to the 40-man, but getting a preview look. I picture Buxton actually getting to the majors first, depending on the play of Benson and where the Twins end up putting Arcia. The Twins HAVE to address the who's on first and who will DH issue sooner rather than later.
  14. Yeah, he did clear waivers. How did that happen? Could've been grabbed in the Rule 5. Was free to find a job with any other team (Florida, Houston).
  15. You hope your rotation (top four pitchers) can get you 50 wins at least. Ideal would be 65-70 from all five! That means they pitch into at least the 6th holding a lead.
  16. And remember, he had the horrid thumb injury. He should be better in the field. He was, after all, the "shortstop" of our future at one time.
  17. I agree with what now seems to be smoke and mirrors. Correia and Pelfrey are just filler. At this point, say rebuild and move out Morneau and think about Mauer and send Willingham packing in mid-season. I would almost rather see a field of prospects than just place holders. Sure, I'll be mad at all the payroll savings going who knows where. I'll be upset that we have to sit thru two seasons at least before we get a glimmer of competitive hope. Yeah, I did a quick run thru of free agent and thought the wins could sign Sizemore or Ginzalez and still find a hole for a Rauch/Hawkins, maybe Gonz or Myers or Padilla. ut then, why. Will we actually increase the chances by 5-10 wins over previous seasons? Better to let Hendriks take his licks, see if Hermsen can do anything, let Gibson get his experience. Let's run out Hicks and Benson. Hell, other teams do it. Start Buxton in left and let him swing and learn. I am really curious to see what kind of excitement can be created by TwinsFest. Pay money to get an advance look at what? The down-on-the-farm guys will probably be more poluar than the other players (something that happened last year -- overpriced autographs). Maybe 10,000 fans dropping season ticket plans will wake these guys up. They still get the coveted $25 million change next year from TV. But you don't sell hot dogs and beer and souvenirs to empty seats. I want to find hope, but I can see an 0-10 start out of the central chute!
  18. 2013 Minnesota Twins Roster - Majors View And can also follow this minor league section which will be updated more as we approach spring training, and I scan in cards for most of these guys. You can also click back to see rosters and minor leagues for the Twins all the way back to the beginning -- A ball and up. Sometimes fun to see who did play in the Twins system.
  19. Need someone who can talk to Dickey.....
  20. 2013 Minnesota Twins Roster - Majors View - also keeping major league AND minor league roster updated here. I transfer the lower minor league guys over as I hear about their status. Joel
  21. It is a great way to get out into the greater midwest area. Most are well attended, hosted by broadcasting partners of the team or civic groups. hey make school and hospital stops. Sometimes a business stop. You usually have to wrangle an invite, not just walk in (which isn't that hard ocne you find a sponsor). Then tend to travel in a mini-bus. And it can be cold in the Dakotas.
  22. Buehrle is not worth it at the moment. Sign Saunders, but he is only needed for two years, so probably not worth the expense. I would still look at Myers or Padilla with a 2-3 year deal and an option for a 4th. I imagine Happ will be long relief. Right now, today, it doesn't pay for the Twins to trade prospects...that is their future. The bigger question is that at some point the Twins need to play prospects, which will be hard to watch and endure, but until they play, you don't know. Seriously, the Twins are rebuilding. I hate the fact of them not spending money, yet I wonder why spend money if it isn't going to make much of a difference...you can't necessarily buy victories. Too bad the Twins spent all that time and energy selling us on going to Target Field to watch baseball (not the team at that time). Now is when you have t promote the outdoors Target Field experience. TwinsFest is on the horizon. The Twins are all screwed up. Will be interesting to see how they spin 2013 and beyond.
  23. And some folks wanted us to bring back Andres Torres. Hey, is Mike Restovich still out there?
  24. I still like the Twins looking at Myers or Padilla....both could bullpen if/when Gibson becomes available. Saunders would be nothing but short term. Jiurgens would be a nice acquisition. And I would still grab Webb and start him at AA and see if he can work his way back. Yes, would like one more starter, a better infielder (even thrid base....move Plouffe to right field) and bring back Thome!
  25. I like it. Never too many guys. And waaaay too much fodder, though, at AAAA that needs to be shaken out.
