  1. Memorial Day Weekend I had to put that heading in there in case I forgot what it was I was writing about. They (the ubiquitous "they") say the first thing that goes is your hearing. I think. But it isn't true. The first thing that goes is... wait a minute... has something to do with... Oh, memory! That's why I mentioned Memorial Day.! Got it. Forgetfulness sneaks up on you. First you can't find your car keys, then you wonder aimlessly room to room wondering why you're wondering room to room, next thing you know you're standing out in your front yard, the car keys you just found in your hand, wondering which vehicle on the street is yours. But it ain't all bad. The good part of memory loss is you can't recall if the Twins won yesterday or not. In effect, the Twins season starts over every day. No baggage. So, let's not forget why we have a Memorial Day. Take a moment or two to remember those whose sacrifice made it possible for us to enjoy Apple Pie and Baseball. Hurling (not that kind) Today Twins: Ober 4-2 4.40 Rangers: Urena 1-3 ERA 3.29
  2. I think your experience verifies the point(s) I was trying to make. You, as the "head" coach went back to the drawing board (being more direct), the players then established they believed in you as their coach, then spent time together learning to believe in each other. But that wasn't the result of a player called team meeting that started the "rebirth". You did. So yes, your team did indeed have an outstanding coach. The best athlete I ever coached, a young lady, All-State in two sports, State Champion in a third, went on to play Div 1 and currently coaches at the college level, recently told me her coaching motto “kids, don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care". That, I believe is "head" coaching, getting on the same wave length. How that applies to dealing with professional athletes I have no idea. But you'd think there must be some sort of mutual trust factor involved, a "belief in each other" at some level. But what do I know. I'm just an old fart still living in the past. Interesting topic though.
  3. I spent 25 years of my life coaching; basketball, football, volleyball, track, boys and girls, from junior high to junior college and learned a few things. Coaching isn't all about teaching skills, it's mostly "head" coaching. You have to get your players to believe in themselves, their teammates and you. If you can accomplish that you'll not only have a successful team, you'll also have a "fun" team; everyone (players and coaches) will enjoy coming to practice and learning new skills, game plans and strategies. They'll laugh and joke going through drills, they'll tease each other in a good-natured manner, they'll congratulate each other when they win and console each other when they loose. Fun teams don't call team meetings. Disgruntled teams do. And that means they either don't believe in themselves, or their teammates, or their coach(es). Which indicates a "head" coaching failure of some sort and a necessary trip Back to the Drawing Board.
  4. The smart money says Margot goes, Miranda stays. What the Twins actually do will be inconceivable.
  5. Sorry, but I've been pretty much away from baseball all weekend. Just saw your post now and will accept the challenge as soon as I get back from another dreaded out-of-town family reunion this coming weekend.
  6. That's the second biggest Coleman cooler I've ever seen.
  7. I stayed overnight in Seattle once. Accidentally checked into a dive. Door jamb was broken, faucet wouldn't shut off, sheets looked like the entire neighborhood slept there, guys kept tapping at the door asking for Delilah... didn't get any sleep. I mentioned it to Bill Gates over breakfast... next thing you know they made a movie out of it. Changed the plot a little bit though so I couldn't claim any of the royalties. Any truth to the rumors Bill Gates has taken the state of Washington private?
  8. Shrimp dip and chips as an appetizer. German sausage and kraut washed down with Irish whiskey for the main course, reflective of my heritage, and the Twin's lucky sausage, followed by my wife's chocolate cake for dessert. It's her birthday so I'll reward her later... you know, do the dishes.
  9. Riverbrian- One of your intros was the very first game thread I read on TD and I laughed so hard I just had to follow the game via the thread. The experience was more than enough to convince me to become a TD member, which I've enjoyed for the past dozen years or so. I owe you, buddy.
  10. The old style Game Threads is what drew me to TD in the first place; the intros that at least drew your attention and became the side stories that might or might not be about baseball but were a like a conversation you might have with friends between innings if you were sitting at the ballpark; bad jokes, sick puns, odd ball humor... more time laughing and less time grumbling. I know I've spent less time overall on TD in general and game threads in particular since the old style thread intros disappeared. A lineup card just doesn't do it for me. I know, it was a lot of work to schedule writers and I'm sure it was frustrating as hell for Stringer Bell and anyone else who took on the task of getting all the games covered, but judging by other's comments regarding game threads something has been lost with the new "intros" that are little more than a lineup card. I don't know if there's a viable solution, but maybe TD should consider adding some incentives to game thread authors and certainly for whoever takes on the responsibility of coordinating intros; a trinket of some sort for the writers, a beer mug, a T-shirt, a bobblehead, whatever, and maybe a couple of game tickets or maybe even a buck or two for the coordinator. Whatever it takes to bring 'em back. Disclaimer: I've written an intro or two in the past.
  11. And Sano comes up to bat as a pinch hitter, bottom of the ninth, game tied, two outs, Rocco had already emptied the bull pen. He looks down the bench... nothing but position players. But there, at the very end of the bench, trying to hide his bulk behind an exhausted Ober is... a smiling La Tortuga! "Get Buxton's uniform and glove!!" Rocco shouts "and get out there!" And so the clash of giants begins... The excited fans launch to their feet as La Tortuga springs from the dugout, "Nice angle" the visiting Bert Blylevin remarks from the press box. "We'd have paid a lot of money to see this," Dick Bremer adds. "And now we're going to witness history in the making. Reminds me of a game we did back in 1995, it was a Tuesday, wind was out of the west, Bert was eating a hot dog, mustard running down his shirt... Tortuga makes sure he passes by Sano, the two giants grin at each other, share a few words neither one can understand, then pat each other on the fanny and get in position... Wait a minute, I ran out of whiskey... be right back.
  12. The man drove me nuts as a Twin but I wish him all the best. Most everyone deserves a second chance.
  13. I also dated Ms. De'Meaner in college. She was so gullible it was almost a crime.
  14. I dated Carte Blanche in college. Woman always got her way.
  15. Yeah. No way Rocco would allow any pitcher to throw that many. And it looks like Louie just avoided the possibility. I see St. Paul in his future.
  16. Louie is gonna need 100 pitches to get through the 5th at the rate he's going. That's arm-falling-off territory.
  17. You mean you never thought the Twins would get two batters above the Mendoza Line, or that we'd be starting a lineup with 7 of 9 below Mendoza?
