  1. Except for the fact that he's out of options. So barring injuries he won't spend time in Rochester as there's no way he'd pass through waivers to get sent down.
  2. Let's not kid ourselves about Robbie ... he strikes out plenty on his own - about 1 out of every 4 PA last season and about the same this spring. His lone value is his ability to take a walk, although was way down in the second half last year, too. Without that, he's little more than a platoon DH and PH because of his awful fielding. He's essentially Danny Santana without the speed or defensive flexibility (as in the ability to fail all over the field).
  3. Terrible defensive outfielders everywhere hate you right now for comparing their skills to Robert's.
  4. Better hashtag for this team: #MoveOver62Mets or #TheDriveFor105
  5. So, Robbie Grossman is the everyday DH, Danny Santana is still employed and they're using an 8-man bullpen? If I had three nightmare scenarios for this roster, two of them are listed above. Absolute garbage.
  6. Very little about this bullpen surprises me, and even less impresses me. I can't wrap my head around continued for success for Kintzler due to his inability to miss bats. Breslow hasn't been good for a while, Belisle has been OK the last few years, but late-30s pitchers scare me as they can drop off quickly. Rogers = cool. Pressly = cool. Tonkin, I'm lukewarm on. If he can do something about giving up long balls at a Radkeian pace, and it'd be nice to see the inherited runs % drop some more. I do, however, like his arm and am hopeful that not being a de facto long man will help. Haley? I don't think they would've really missed out on much by letting him go back to Boston, but is there anyone better and ready for that role right now? I think this is going to be rough season on the mound.
  7. Honestly, while I don't think they're impossible numbers for him to reach, I think the only one he even comes close to is doubles. Given his age, injury history and recent track record due to both, I think .281 is unlikely, as are the HRs and the OPS. I think .265, with 6 and .715 are more likely. Not saying he won't reach Seth's predictions, but I just don't see it.
  8. How so many pieces from a 103-loss team are back just befuddles me - and supplemented only by a Saber darling catcher and a bunch of "character" guys. Me thinks it's gonna be a REALLY long season.
  9. Time has passed Patrick and Jim by. Personally, I trust the little birdies on the east side of the river and the close personal friends on the west side more than either of those two ... or the beat writer on the west side for that matter? And how much do I trust the birdies and CPFs? Not much at all.
  10. Exactly! We're talking about very young men with very high ceilings. If we're talking DanSan and JB Shuck, then by all means let's make the rope as short as possible. Potential and talent will get you continued opportunities and latitudes not afforded others (that's true in most professions). It's not until those things are proven to be non-existent or diminished that things change. Let's let him/them sink or swim and not rehash Patrick's Strib column from this time last year.
  11. Totally agree with you - and I'm at the end of the Gen Xers. Think back to the '80s and '90s - if someone was up and contributing before their 21st birthday it was downright outrageous. I'm sure there are others, but only Gooden and Griffey are coming to mind. Now, freaks of nature like Trout, Harper, Machado, Kershaw, JoFer, etc. coming up and not only contributing, but contributing at a HIGH level, irrational fans are chalking everyone that isn't an All Star or in MVP contention by their 23rd birthday, as a bust. We're seeing a lot of young, generational talent come through right now, but just because others aren't doing their thing at that age it doesn't mean they won't.
  12. OK, in all seriousness. Yes, the constant Ks are a concern, but if ends up with 30 HRs, 100 RBI, and plays passable/improving defense, I can deal with them. He's not likely to be a Triple Crown winner. He's also not likely to be a Gold Glove winner, but all of those 3B that everyone seems to love so much for their defense - Koskie, Plouffe, etc. - were awful defensive players when they came up. But they worked - like professionals - to improve their craft to the point that they're now remembered as "good." From what I've seen, Sano's biggest problem is the throws, which I'm confident can be corrected. As for his "diet," so long as they tie some rope to his back and float him down the street on Thanksgiving morning, I could care less. He moves around in the field well enough, he's not a huge liability on the basepaths and he's just always going to be a big guy ... we need to accept that. Also, he appears to be quite a bit lighter than last season, so that would seemingly poke holes in your dedication theory. As I mentioned before - the KID is 23 for another month. Let's give him a full year and a position he knows before we start booking him a slow-moving flatbed to Rochester.
  13. I mean, really, what business does a 23-year-old KID having fun playing a game for a living? How dare he speak to and interact with fans. Forget Rochester, for that heinous crime he should be sold to the Sugarland Skeeters. Hopefully he gets his head screwed on straight before starting day or before I figure out what starting day is ... whichever comes first.
  14. Did Perkins just say the only things standing between him and pitching are arm strength and velocity? Phew, thankfully those are two things pitchers don't really need.
  15. I really wish the Wonder Twins were making the call on this instead of Molly and Allen. I really have zero faith in either of them.
  16. Does the 4th option year work the same as regular options or are there special rules for it? This year will count as an option regardless of how many times he's up and down, right? So, at least in theory, we could start in Rochester, come up for injuries and go back when that time is up without being exposed to waivers. Although I'm not sure if this 4th year has special rules connected to it.
  17. There has to be some mail-order Swiss Army knock-off that could be had for UPCs and shipping costs or picked up in an old Ben Franklin store. Whatever that brand is called, shall be my new nickname for DanSan.
  18. I don't think you're accounting for his new arm slot? Did you happen to hear that he's got a new arm slot? I think once his new arm slot is no longer "new," it'll just be a slot and those numbers will go down
  19. I was hoping for a teary-eyed, but with sideburns created by God him/herself, Mauer to walk to a podium and announce that for the good of his hamstrings and the future of the organization that he has loved since childhood, that he'd be retiring immediately. Sure, we'd all miss his defense, and opposing pitchers would miss the opportunity to groove a belt-high fastball down the middle for strike one, but the Target Field infield worms would be so much safer. Alas, I'll have to settle for the veteran-y arm o' Vogelsong being cast aside in favor of a youthful pitcher on the Opening Day roster.
  20. This is the second best gift the Twins could give me for my birthday. Thanks, Derek and Thad!
  21. I don't think the question is if it will be under 0, rather how much under.
  22. Not completely, but there's certainly an element of that at play. Taking a borderline or pitch that's slightly outside of the zone and getting it called a strike is most certainly fooling the umpires. But you are correct in the fact that the big part of it is presenting pitches that should be called strikes in a way that makes it more likely to get the correct call.
  23. Looks like Big Pelf and Garza will also be on the market next offseason. http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/2018/starting-pitcher/ I'd kick the tires on Pineda and Darvish, and probably Cobb, too, depending on health. Like several mentioned, I wouldn't necessarily spend just to spend, however. Can we just save up all of the Twins' pennies to make a run at Shohei Otani? Sure, Asia hasn't been kind yet to the Twins, but one will have to stick at some point, right?
  24. My ideal scenario for catcher was Castro (I mean, since they signed him and all) backed up by one of the young guys. My gut tells me that now that people are starting to make a big deal out of pitch framing, that the umpires are going to be wise to it. If that's the case, what does it do to Castro's overall value? Pretty average with the stick and doesn't seem to throw out runners at a high rate, so I'm not sure. I hope it doesn't play out that way, but it would scream "Twins Way" to get a pitch-framing specialist right about the time the umpires get hip to it. Belisle is an upgrade and I have no problem there. Breslow, I fear, is done and could stunt the development of guys like Rogers and Melotakis. I've assumed since the day he signed that the #5 spot was Vogelsong's to lose and Mike's thinly-veiled PR piece pretty much makes me think it's been an unspoken fact since that time. Stubbs would be a slight upgrade over Grossman defensively, but a huge step back on offense. Probably a wash, but definitely not room for both of them.
