  1. Is anyone gonna be surprised when Thorpe, Dobnak, and Smeltzer are competing with one or two veteran journeyman for the final 3 spots in the opening day rotation? I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this front office bringing in one better arm, much less two, to make it a 3-4 horse race for one spot. There are so many pitching-starved teams that anyone who *might* be available via trade is going to have an astronomical asking price, and probably isn't going to be that great. The chance was to sign a FA or two. That didn't happen, so all of these guys are going to have to step up if the Twins plan to make any noise in '20.
  2. Given his age and athletic ability, I'm not terribly worried about the leg kick. What I am worried about, however, is the pitch recognition that's mentioned and him being a "guess hitter." I'm not ready to jump ship on him, but if someone were to offer top of the rotation pitching and insisted on either Royce or Kirilloff as part of the package, I'd probably choose to keep the latter.
  3. I don't think you're taking into account how popular he is. That's gotta be worth, like, an extra 23% or so.
  4. They don't have enough starts around right to fill the rotation much less convert one to the 'pen.
  5. Gotta overpay to get guys to want to play in Minneapolis.
  6. What stage is accepting the Caleb Thielbar signing?
  7. Winning should be all the entertainment you need.
  8. I went to stage 3 about 2 hours into free agency. I'll probably remain there until mid-May.
  9. On a minor league contract with a spring training invite I'd be in on Bird. However, given the injury history, if it was anything more than that I'd pass.
  10. I'm glad someone else is taking the torch on this one. Tortuga is a fine player to have on a losing team - he's quirky, rubes love him, and his shenanigans could distract from a bad on-field product. But I'd hope a team that at least appears to be a contender can do better - even for their 26th roster spot. In addition to the offensive numbers mentioned in the post, he was actually a below average defender at every position he played last year. (Unless I'm reading the numbers wrong.) Versatility is great, if you're good or even average at the positions. But simply being able to occupy space while breathing isn't what I'd call versatility. He's got an option left. Use it. Let him play in Rochester to see if he can become more selective at the plate (his career would tell me it won't happen) and if he can actually become viable somewhere in the field. And if the worst case scenario happens - Garver, Avila, Jeffers all injured - you've got him there to hopefully not derail the team.
  11. I'd choose none. If that's the best they can do, might as well just roll with the internal options.
  12. Let's be real here ... it'll be Homer, Miley and a pallet of vomit bags for me.
  13. As much as I'd like to agree with you, I'm expecting barely a ripple. I don't see them cutting a big check for pitching and there seemingly aren't any needle-movers available via trade ... and if they were, would they give up any prospects for them? I'm withholding FO judgment because they seem to know how to find and develop talent, but I their ability to supplement the big league pitching staff hasn't impressed me so far.
  14. Won't be going out of my way to add any of them to my Twins collection, although I suspect they'll be easy to pick up via trades and eBay.
  15. Not wild about him, but since I doubt they're going to sign any starters they might as well try to load the bullpen up as much as possible.
  16. I don't know it will work. But you know what doesn't work? Doing nothing. If you want to sit through another season of guys like Martin Perez, Devin Smeltzer, Randy Dobnak, etc. that's on you. For once - JUST ONCE - I want to see them evaluate a guy the same as everyone else does, identify them as their top choice, and go after them hard. That might mean having to outbid the big boys. That might mean overpaying. That might mean making everyone in the front office nervous. I don't care. I want to see this team win at a high level and I want to see people stop giving them a free pass for "trying really hard" or for "coming in second." I'm not saying Wheeler is that guy. But someone has to be that guy for them and they need to go get him
  17. If I'm being honest, I'm ready for the Twins to pay someone stupid money - be it Wheeler or someone else. The reality is that they're going to have to overpay. Minnesota isn't a glamorous destination, so it's going to take something extra to do it. And I actually don't even care if it doesn't pan out, It would suck if it didn't, but I just want to see that they're willing to spend the money and take an actual risk to get someone to come here that isn't battling injuries or on the back 9 of their career. It's great that they're "in the running" on some of these guys, but as a fan it's tough to spend my money on them when they seemingly don't want to spend theirs on the product they're putting on the field.
  18. It's probably best to look for a guy with a better backstory anyway. They're warm and fuzzy and don't cost as much.
  19. I'm already planning on Berrios, Odo, and some combo of trash heap and rookies for the other 3 spots. Coincidentally, I'm also planning to bet the under on whatever number Vegas gives them in March.
  20. I'm starting to get the feeling that any "meaningful" rotation upgrades are going to come through trade(s). Or, more likely, not at all. At this point it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they didn't land any of the top 5, of which I'd have only been interested in 4 anyway.
  21. Is this a bit? If so, well done. If not, you terrify me.
