Youre not really painting an accurate picture here. Buxton is a 9.5 WAR player in 381 games. Hicks 11.7 in 646. Buxton is nearly doubling up Hicks in that regard. Hicks is also going to be 30, Buxton 26, on their next birthday. The Yankees fleeced the Twins in one of the worst trades I’ve ever seen since I’ve been alive. But, the Twins aren’t losing the CF battle. I’d bet there isn’t a single person in Major League Baseball that would consider taking Hicks over Buxton if given the choice. The question really is, would you rather have Hicks in a corner OF spot or Rosario/Kepler?

Article: Building a Perfect Twins Trade Deadline
Darius replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Already said this in another thread, but pulling the trigger on a trade today after beating the Yankees in game 1 of the series would really energize the fan base. Whatever you’re paying would be worth it in terms of the PR alone, let alone what you’d get on the field.- 39 replies

Hey, Falvine. You want the the fans/media to forget the last two months? Make a trade for a reliever today after beating the Yankees last night. Tha fan base would be totally re-energized (I know I would be).

Some awesome numbers by Sano lately (before last nights game, I think): Over the last 16 games he’s got more XBH (10) and walks (11) than strikeouts (17). He’s slashing something like .350/.450/.750. (Credit to Do Houng Park). He’s an incredible talent.

Rogers is a fine reliever. But, his stuff isn’t overpowering by any means. Did everyone see what Liam Hendriks did in game 2 I’d ther series? That’s what a late inning reliever ona World Series contender looks like. Being overworked is a contributor, sure. But, things were going to catch up to Rogers eventually. I’m still not totally convinced he’s the caliber of relieve to be used in a scenario like Game 7 of the ALCS against a RHer like Judge, Springer, etc. At this point, not only is it hurting the team that they have refused to address the bullpen for so long, but it’s becoming a PR nightmare as well. Fans are pissed. They’ll stop coming (and they should). It makes it even worse when you see guys like Presley, Hendriks, etc, dominating in late inning roles for teams that make us look like the bad news bears. We’re not even going to make playoffs. I think everyone is starting to see the writing on the wall. And, honestly, after the start we’ve had and the amount of time they’ve spent idly watching this spiral around the drain, someone should be accountable. What I want to know is, have they presented trades to ownership and have been turned down? Or, are they just chalking the first couple of months up to statistical fluke and are banking in the future. The latter I could stomach, the former would make me a Brewers fan. The 00s would be tough to live through again.

That was a huge win (they all seem that way now). Really fun game to watch. Incredible home run from Rosario. That truly felt like a breakout moment. The change in energy was electric. Garver is pretty incredible as well. He’s emerging as a premier player. The guy can hit. Hopefully this a springboard to 3 of 4.

Article: Series Preview: For Whom The Schedule Tolls
Darius replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a must-have series. Give this one away with awful defense and pitch selection and we could be out of a playoff spot all together in short order. It’s insane that this is where we are. What an epic collapse (yes playing .500 ball for two months is collapsing for a team once in the hunt for the best record in baseball).- 19 replies

The Yankees, Cubs, and most notably Dodgers all have more errors per game this year than the Twins. Errors happen. Sometimes pitchers have to pull a little extra weight and get a hitter out with runners on base. Not excusing it, but the numbers show that other teams commit just as many/more errors and are pulling away from the Twins record-wise like they’re tied to a post. It’s more complicated than an outfielder dropping a fly ball.

Disagree. He just got scorched by an 0-2 curveball a few days ago, when my 5 year-old kid could see that Santana wasn’t catching up to his fastball. It cost the Twins two games in the standings that day. One more yesterday. He can’t locate the pitch. Don’t call it when other things are clearly working. A one run game in the 7th inning in the middle of a playoff race isn’t the time hope something to close your eyes and hope something works. A good catcher takes control of things there. You tell the pitcher what he’s throwing. Especially when it’s a guy like May who has no track record to support any credibility.

Complaining about pulling Perez is just silly. The guy is not a good pitcher, and an implosion is a matter of time. Everyone would be chastising Baldelli today for leaving him in if he would’ve done so, because Perez would’ve given it away eventually. It seems like the new-age act from Baldelli is wearing thin. Everything looks great when you’re winning two out of every three. It’s time to cope with reality. This team isn’t a great team. Certainly not the best team in the AL like we all started to believe. We’re not even the best team in the division. We won’t even be the best team getting a wildcard spot (if we even get one - a performance like this against Oakland and you can probably stick a fork in the season and start selling guys). The FO should’ve struck while the iron was hot. They have massive culpability here for this thing going off the rails. What an incredible waste of a historic start. Mark my words today, this team will be on the outside looking in come playoff time. What an embarrassment (the defense, the awful pitch selection). Might be time to start thinking about halting production on that bronze statue of Wes Johnson. This pitching staff is as bad as we all thought it was when we were pulling our hair out about the lack of offseason activity. Frankly, I’m getting kind of pissed off with Falvine and Baldelli at this point.

Just when you thought the Indians were out of it, the Twins let them back in. Bad Luck? They gave up the lead right away in the first by playing awful defense. Then, when handed the chance to take the lead back on a silver platter (via walks and HBP), They couldn’t get the ball out of the infield. This team has been playing this way, and giving games away to bad teams, for a while now. It’s coming up in two months of nearly .500 baseball (since the beginning of June, I believe). I have a really hard time buying this as a legitimate World Series contender at this point, especially if Buxton is out for an extended period of time. The respite from being concerned about giving away the division was nice for a few days, though.

I think he’s the most valuable. Is he the best? No. But, given the Twins circumstances there probably isn’t a reliever that would be missed more if he were to get injured (wood has been knocked).

Article: Twins Minor League Report (7/13): Bats Bats Bats
Darius replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Larnach is really raking. 100 hits and 140+ total bases in just over 80 games. His OPS (.845) is actually lower than I would expect. But, he’s got a done of doubles and only 6 HRs. There’s an age old adage about doubles turning into home runs with experience/added strength. The way things have been going with Lewis/Kirilloff, it looks like he may beat them both to the majors. He’s got to get a shot at AA this year, right? It’s not out of the realm of possibilities to see him in September next year.- 13 replies

It’s truly amazing what Cleveland has been able to do with pitching. I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it. Clevinger is getting incredibly good. It would not surprise me at all to see him win a Cy Young in the next couple of years. They just keep churning these aces out of their system at an unbelievable rate.

I think it’s pretty clear he wasn’t doing push-ups to say “I crushed that double.” But, saying “I need to get stronger to muscle that out,” is still easily seen as a slight. I’d also interpret that as “I’m so good and you’re so mediocre that I need to flagellate myself on second base for only banging a double off the wall,” and be pretty annoyed. Clearly the buzzing of Lewis’ tower was intentional.

Can’t wait to watch this series. It’s really a no-lose scenario for all of us. Obviously, the more games the Twins take in this series, the better our chances of winning the division. This would make many of us happy. If the Twins were to get swept, there is going to be a nuclear meltdown. Even though I’ll be upset about the losses, and believe the Indians will win the division if they sweep this series, we’re going to get some priceless hot takes that will become lore. Bards will still be writing songs of these hot takes long after we’re all gone. I’m talking drop Buxton for Granite level hot takes (the undisputed champion to date). Twins Daily will be accused of juicing the threads in order to create more hot takes. What a time to be alive.

Article: Juiced Baseballs: Are 2019 MLB Stats a Joke?
Darius replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the lack of consistency is a joke. But, I’m not overly offended by the way the game is this year, it’s actually fun to watch. What I mean about lack of consistency is, think about a player like Joe Mauer for instance. Let him play with that ball for a couple of years in the Dome and eventually TF. Remember how many opposite field fly balls were caught on the warning track in his career? Literally hundreds. It’s not out of bounds to assume he would’ve had dozens of home runs, at least, added to his career stat line, thus making him a first ballot hall of famer and one of the greatest catchers of all-time (he’s an afterthought nationwide). As a fan, sure it’s fine. But you can’t tell me this doesn’t upset players who didn’t get the benefit. Certain players it may have even cost millions of dollars and who knows how many accolades (some players benefit from this more than others). It offers no reasonable comparison between a player now and a player in the past, which is part of the fun of being a lifelong fan of the game. Basically, it’s fun to watch. But, in a way, it throws the history and nostalgia of baseball out the window. It’s even on a greater scale than Bonds/Big Mac. By appearances, a few players were out of whack back then. But, when dozens of guys hit 40+ home runs (which may happen this year), it dilutes it even more. All context in terms of baseball for us middle-aged and older fans know is all but gone. Frankly, it’s kind of joke that the Twins and Yankees this year may be considered the best offenses of all time based on stats. Deep down, any reasonable baseball man knows that’s false (some of the Indians and Mariners teams of the 90s alone blow them away, IMO). -
Article: Blueprinting the Twins Deadline Plan
Darius replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I had to make a choice, I’d like to see a starter. I know that Odorizzi and Perez have been good, and Gibson can be good at times. But, I’d rather not lean on any of those too heavily in a playoff series. I don’t feel great about navigating the gauntlet of New York/Houston when running a guy like that out there twice per series. Starting pitching is huge in the playoffs. We may have enough guys to get by in the pen if the starters can get some relatively deep starts. Add a serviceable late-inning guy to a starter and we’re really in business. But, I think a high/quality starter does more for World Series aspirations than a 7th-8th inning guy.- 41 replies

Great article. My summary: Martin Perez being a regular starter and allowing the fewest HRs on the team is much more surprising than Eggs’ number, IMO. I had no faith in Perez. I don’t think Buxton is a surprise for anyone other than a handful of hot take fans that were ready write him off at age 23-24. It would be more surprising if a player of his caliber never materialized into some sort of player. Cron would probably be my biggest surprise. When they picked him off of the heap, who saw a borderline All-Star coming?

Great win. These injuries just keep piling up. All you hear about is how amazing the Yankees’ story is with injuries. Well, the Twins have come out of nowhere to enter the conversation for the most prolific offense of all time. That has been done without a full lineup contingent healthy for nigh a single game this year (honestly, I think none). ...And just think, that includes giving the Yanks Aaron Hicks for absolutely nothing.

This series is massive, actually, after dropping one of Oakland. With Cleveland now within ear shot (with a ton of games left with them), Texas could quickly become one of the team we’re competing with for a wildcard. Yes, it’s gotten to the point where we need to start being concerned about what the other possible wildcard teams are up to as well. Scalding hot take for some right now, maybe, but I’m concerned.
