Will a Catcher Ever Win a Batting Title Again?
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Considering how rare it is for a catcher to win a batting title in the first place, I'd bet that we have seen the last of it. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see it. I just don't expect it. And I'm in the group that thinks that fewer and fewer catchers will even qualify for batting titles as time passes. This conversation definitely makes me miss the likes of Mauer and Posey a lot more though. Those guys were fun to watch around the plate. -
This squad isn't built for the stolen base, so that they came in last in MLB is not surprising. And I would expect that trend to continue unless they reshape active roster construction considerably. Buxton and Gordon are only going to steal so many bases. I don't see larger bases making a dramatic change to this team's game to game strategy. All that said, I'd absolutely love to see it. I miss that aspect of the game a lot! And a baserunning threat complicates the shift. Less so now with the restrictions, but it can still be a problem for defenses.

The 3 Most Probable Twins Trade Targets at Shortstop
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I can get good defensive play, "not a liability at the plate" is enough for me. I don't see that as settling either. Too much ineptitude at the plate on this team that "not a liability at the plate" is still an upgrade. -
Twins Trade Candidate: Emilio Pagan
wsnydes replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No idea if he's worth anything on the trade market, but he can't remain on this roster for next year. It's time to move on whether they can deal him or not. -
I'm not necessarily opposed to a stopgap, but they have to be something more than serviceable. The problem is that I don't know who that would be. A long term solution would be nice since this team hasn't had a legit, long term solution for too long. I'm still hoping that Martin can figure things out and help out at CF. That's obviously also not without risk. Ideally, right now anyway, I think I'd move Urshela over to SS. Miranda to 3B. Kirilloff to 1B. At least there are more options for 1B than the left side of the infield. Leave Polanco at 2B.
-
This is how I'd approach it as well. After those four, I have little interest in any of the other options. Not signing someone has it's risks though. We have no idea where Lewis is on his recovery and we don't know what he'll have when he does come back. I know Urshela can play some SS, so I can live with that in the short term more than I can tolerate Polanco there.

Week in Review: The Walking Dead

This seems like a pretty good summation for not just the past week, but the bulk of the second half.- 17 replies

We're talking two different things. I'm referring to expectations relative to the start of the season not generally speaking over the long term.

I've maintained all season long that I don't believe that the FO planned to be as competitive as they were. I think they were trying to avoid bottoming out and build for 2023 by getting the prospects big league time and allow the next batch of minor league players to be on the cusp. That's one area where the putridity of the division actually hurt them. It allowed an average team (at best) to lead a division for most of the season and it raised expectations.

What Happens to the Twins Front Office for 2023?
wsnydes replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think anything happens to the FO. They were charged with rebuilding the entire organization and the Polhad's have always been patient owners, so I don't see the FO going anywhere. I hope that there are adjustments to the medical staff and procedures, but not much beyond that. Their first draft classes are just now making their way to the big leagues, so I do think that a full evaluation can start to be made now. Now that they are able to implement their full plan from the ground up, results will be expected.- 56 replies

In the End, the 2022 Twins Never Stood a Chance
wsnydes replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Before the season, my biggest concern was the depth of the pitching and production of the younger players. And I believed that the season would go as the younger players did. The pitching blew through the depth that they did have, and then some as the injuries kept piling up. The younger players actually played pretty well, but then they fell to the same injury bug. I didn't expect this team to be all that competitive. I saw it as more of a bridge to next season while getting the next group of prospects MLB experience. I figured they'd end up with a win total in the upper 70s. That's probably about where they will end up, but in a much different manner of getting there. And they were more "competitive" much longer than I expected. With the lineups that they've had to trot out there, it's pretty obvious why they have faded away. The FO and coaching staff deserve some blame, but I don't know how anyone can reasonably expect them to be able to keep the ship upright with so much of the top end talent of the team on the IL. The medical staff and procedures do really need to get an full evaluation. Two years in a row with a squad decimated by injuries isn't a fluke anymore.- 94 replies

The 2022 Twins Are Now Built For October
wsnydes replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They may stack up fairly well in the rotation, but beyond that, I'm not as certain. Sure, shortening the bullpen down with an off day between each game helps considerably, but I'm not sold. And the bats, even if Polcano is healthy, Larnach and Buxton come back, can't produce runs consistently without the benefit of a home run. I'd absolutely love to be proven wrong, in fact I'd encourage it, but I'm not seeing any sort of October force to be worried about if I'm an opponent.- 41 replies

3 Disappointing Seasons from Twins' Top Prospects
wsnydes replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The frustrating part about this is how much the FO really needed guys like these to play a role in the big league clubs season. Perhaps not a large role, but at least be there for depth. Particularly in the pitching department. Having a healthy Canterino and/or Balazovic added to the rotation or bullpen could have been huge given all of the injuries to the staff. Hopefully they'll all rebound for next season. Martin might not be as important as the other two, but you can never have too much talent.- 43 replies

Twins 10, Red Sox 5: The Nick Gordon Show

A sweep is always a good way to get "healthy", especially at this point in the season. Now they need to continue that though. They need a good series against Boston so they don't waste what they just accomplished.

It's Time to Shut Down Byron Buxton
wsnydes replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure, but shutting him down just to shut him down for 2023 and shutting him down because he's truly going to do further injury are two different things.- 68 replies

It's Time to Shut Down Byron Buxton
wsnydes replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's not a strawman. It's not even an argument, it's a question. You stated in your own post that a hip strain or an aggregation of a sore hip kept him out 8 days in July. I simply asked how you, or anyone else at this point, know that this isn't the same thing. And the OPs point was to shut him down regardless. If he has a true hip strain, you stated that he'd be out longer than the 10 days anyway so everyone looking to have him shut down would likely get their wish. But, if he's not able to play due to injury, I simply stated that that isn't the same thing as just shutting him down regardless. It's shutting him down because he's unable to play. Two different things.- 68 replies

How do you know this isn't the same thing that kept him out for those 8 days in July? Shutting him down because he's unable to play is quite different than just shutting him down to save him for 2023.- 68 replies

It's Time to Shut Down Byron Buxton
wsnydes replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That does matter, and this appears to be a separate issue from the lingering knee. The Guardians and Twins still play 8 games against each other the rest of the way. So, in order for them to be out of it in my mind, they'd have to be more than 8 games out. I don't see that happening. Not in this division.- 68 replies
