  1. I served on the local school board for four years. The reality was that good ideas get squashed when a majority of a legislative body is more concerned about re-election than doing what is best for their constituents.
  2. It sounds like the Twins are progressing nicely. I am also glad that there seem to be no significant injuries.
  3. My sense is that many voters across the spectrum feel that Washington is corrupt. For example, it is well known that we waste hundreds of billions of dollars on weapons systems that are clearly not worthwhile, because Congress doles out pork in exchange for campaign contributions. Maybe we will be better off in the long run if all of the poisons that lurk in the mud hatch out. It took the Great Depression to pave the way for Social Security. Perhaps we need some extreme, widespread suffering to get more people to appreciate the folly of having a government controlled by elite coalitions of special interests. There are obvious solutions, such as attacking gerrymandering and overturning Citizens United, but until there is more widespread suffering it seems unlikely that enough people will push for change. I suspect that Trump could be the best change agent. If he crashes the economy with trade wars and guts the Affordable Care Act, lots of people will suffer, especially the average Trump voter. And he might even get us expelled from the United Nations, which would be embarrassing. Sometimes countries need to hit bottom before resolving to make major changes, and Trump seems like a good bet to take us there.
  4. I would advise caution in the near term. I have been told by a credible source that the S&P is likely to dip below 1,600 this year.
  5. I wonder why they cannot find a better deal with some local broadcast stations.
  6. Welcome new members. It's normal to feel shy at first. Don't worry. There are some sites where people might be disrespectful, especially towards newbies. At TD, we don't allow that, and we are especially protective of new members. Have fun here!
  7. I like your list as well -- all of it. Probably, Watchmen is my all time favorite.
  8. I am with Brock on this. I would like to see the rest of his list and am wondering why Guardians of the Galaxy did not make the first cut. As for Aflek playing Batman, this is a superhero movie not Hamlet.
  9. This was a fun read for me. http://mlb-teams.pointafter.com/stories/10710/all-time-rosters-each-mlb-franchise?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social.paid&utm_campaign=ao.sp.fb.dt.10324#24-Minnesota-Twins The Twins came in 7th out of all MLB, but that rank depends heavily on Walter Johnson, who had an awesome 152.3 WAR for the Senators. Obviously, this is mostly for fun. For example, it has Killebrew at 3B and Joe Judge at 1B. But there's nothing wrong with fun, so please keep this thread fun.
  10. Moderator note -- Dave is correct. If you find a thread to be repetitive or don't like an entire thread, then please do not post there. Please also keep in mind that the most effective response to trolling is to not dignify it with a response.
  11. Moderator note -- I just read this thread and am troubled by the level of trolling. If you want to take a position then you must support the position and be civil to those who disagree. If you cannot do that then your posting privileges will be suspended.
  12. Moderator note -- let's tone down the invective a little bit. What allows us to debate these contentious issues without screaming at each other is the TD policy of mutual respect.
  13. Moderator note -- the personal attacks in this thread are unacceptable. Please cut it out.
  14. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, many newspapers included large exclamation points in their headlines. This was because the news was shocking and had huge consequences. It did not mean that anyone was celebrating the event. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/pearl-harbor-on-the-nations-front-pages/2013/12/30/a20eef44-2059-11e1-b180-0df42576a2af_gallery.html
  15. This is an interesting link. I like the idea of someone who the Republicans previously approved for a Circuit Court position. It would look bad for a Senator to vote against someone who he/she previously approved.
  16. I don't see why a candidate would need to resign his or her current position. I like your metaphor, but think that the Republicans will look worse if they have to sacrifice multiple lambs. And maybe there is precedent for offering a list -- I am sure that people will be looking for precedents on both sides.
  17. The idea involving Ginsberg would not do much, except reduce the risk to Democrats that Ginsberg (who is frail) will die and get a conservative who is more moderate than Scalia.
  18. The Republicans could stall the first nomination so long that he might not even get to a second nomination. We would hear a lot of bull about this is important and they need to take their time. My way they have to reject 5 or 10 moderate candidates, which I think would make them look a lot worse.
  19. The Republicans did this with Taft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Howard_Taft I also think that it should not make a difference whether he was a judge before. He got a quality law education and is respected by many as a constitutional scholar.
  20. Obama could nominate only one at a time. But before he nominates he can offer whatever list he wants and ask for a response from the Senate.
  21. The reason for 5 is that it would show a greater willingness to compromise. I would rather have the Republicans have to argue that 5 people are bad than 1 person is bad. On reflection, I might even go with 10, with a focus on candidates who are not registered with either party. A more creative solution would be to persuade Ginsberg to retire, with a deal in place to replace Scalia with a moderate right wing justice who is at least 70 years old to continue Scalia's legacy and Ginsberg with a moderate liberal who is 50 years old and in perfect health. This would be a compromise that would hedge the risk for both sides as to what will happen after November.
  22. Sadly, I believe that this is almost certainly correct. Nonetheless, I think that Obama should offer a list of 5 moderates, and make the radicals on both sides pay a price if they urinate on the process.
  23. I would note that for all we know, Sano has converted some of his fat into muscle. Maybe he lost 5 pounds of fat and converted another 5 pounds into muscle.
  24. Our posting policy is pretty clear on all of this - http://twinsdaily.com/topic/8228-twins-daily-comment-policy-latest-revision-september-2013/ If you cannot be civil then please stop posting on TD.
  25. #1 At Angels Stadium in Morneau's final year. Next to the Twins dugout the first row is gated. I scalped some tickets on that row. Kids who wanted autographs had to hand their items to me and then I set them up on the rail for Morneau to sign. We got to chat a bit and I told him that I hoped that he would be re-signed by the Twins and he said that he hoped so too. It turned out that he was let go at the end of that year. This was my first and only interaction with a MLB player. Morneau seemed like a really nice person. #2 I wish that I had been able to attend the game where Tovar played all 9 positions.
