  1. I think it was a great article. For those that defend Ryan and Gardenhire and disagree with the premise of the article, just one question. How many truly awful years in a row must the Twins have before you agree that change is necessary? Whether Ryan and Gardenhire are good at what they do or not, the results aren't there, and haven't been for the last 4 years. To me it's just insane to keep failing at something and not change how you are doing things. The only changes the Twins have made over these last few years are purely window dressing, without any substance.
  2. Not sure I follow. Are you implying that the Twins would not have gotten more than Pryor if they had agreed to cover Morales' remaining salary? Don't forget that Peavy has been a below average starting pitcher this year. The Twins would not have been able to match what the Giants gave up, but I do think they could have gotten more by agreeing to cover the salary. I guess how much more is up for debate, but as far as I'm concerned with the Twins this year, the cost is irrelevant. They need to figure out how to get better.
  3. I admire the optimism, but the don't think there is any chance they get a Bundy or Harvey in a deal centered on Suzuki - unless they add top 10 prospect back. From the Twins perspective, it's good to see the Yankees continue to deal, and force the issue though. Hopefully that will make the Orioles sweat a little and do something stupid.
  4. I agree (and hope) that it was their plan to deal him if they weren't contending all along. However, the question we don't know is what kind of prospect could they have gotten if they agreed to eat some or all of the salary? The Sox just got the Giants #2 & #7 (preseason) prospects for an under performing Jake Peavy, but picked up some of his remaining salary. Now Morales' value is nowhere near Peavy's but I'm sure the Sox got a lot more by agreeing to cover the $. It seems that this year, money is one asset the Twins have, it would have been nice to see them try to leverage that into a more promising player, if they could. Think of it as "buying" a prospect, if you will, but when you are $15 million under budget for season, why not?
  5. Agree, and it's refreshing to hear someone in the mainstream media finally say so. Sad to ever wish for someone to lose their job, and I don't think Gardy has always been a bad manager. However, he is not and has not been a good manager for the current Twins. Truth is he hasn't had much to work with. However, we don't have anyway of knowing if that's all lack of talent, or if it's lack of proper development and instruction from the organization and their steadfast commitment to the "Twins Way", that Gardy is so fond of. Just seems like guys such as Dozier that actually improve after the reach the major league level or the exception instead of the rule and you have to hold the coaching staff somewhat responsible for that.
  6. Since this is "should be", not what will be -- Agree with moving all the veterans with expiring contracts that you can get a live body for, Willingham, Correia, etc. Either get Suzuki to agree to a reasonable extension or deal him, too. No sense in wasting the asset at this point. Quit messing around with Darnell, Pino, Johnson, etc. and bring up the guys who might actually be good players on better teams like May and Meyer. Install Pinto or Vargas as the full time DH and see how they do at the Major League level. We've seen the Twins completely fade in August in September the last couple of years, no sense to make Gardenhire go through it again. Ask him to resign, and if he isn't willing to, replace him anyway. Make sure he brings his bowling buddy, Anderson with him when he leaves. Start looking for a decent replacement GM from outside the organization. Ryan does not seem willing to work with the current financial realities of the league, and his over reliance on scouting vs. results needs to change. --the best GM is able to combine what the stats and scouts both say to find the best players. Time to change the organizational philosophy of beating guys over the head because they walk someone or try to pull the ball on a regular basis. Some guys are going to walk players, and some guys are going to be pull hitters. Work with their strengths and smooth the rough edges, don't force them to be who they aren't.
  7. Actually, to me sell high simply means trading a player when his value is greatest. That value may be a B prospect or a D prospect or a package of major league players. It's like selling your house before the market crash not after. Suzuki's value, whatever that is will certainly be higher now, than it was last year.
  8. Depends on what your notion of "sell high" is, doesn't it? Isn't his value higher now, than it was this past off season? If he turns back into 2012-13 Suzuki next year, you won't be able to get anywhere near his current value, whatever that is in a trade. The idea of selling high doesn't always mean you'll get a King's ransom, just that you can get more for him now than you could have previously or will likely get in the future. You could argue that Suzuki's value to the Twins is greater than what they will get in a trade, so it doesn't make sense. However, with him being a FA at the end of the year, I would disagree, unless they can agree to a contract extension, which so far it sounds like they can't. So in those terms his trade value may never be higher.
  9. Agree regarding a pitcher, but it seems to me that Pinto's future isn't at C anyway. He has hit pretty well at the major league level, why not promote him and install him as the full time DH. I've seen enough of both Parmelee and Callabello to know they aren't going to be a key part of future teams that I hope are better.
  10. Nothing really wrong with this deal. Morales has been pretty disappointing and since they aren't going anywhere this year, and he's a FA at the end of the season, might as well take what you can for him. The Pohlad's just made another $4+ million too. Would really have liked to see them bring up Vargas or Pinto to try and lay claim to the DH spot though. Not sure what they are planning to do with Polanco at this point, but seems curious to bring him up and have him sit on the bench when they don't have a need for another MI at this point. The continuation of curious roster moves continue.
  11. Have to agree with the sentiment of the article. However, the Twins organization has shown to be incredibly loyal to not only players, but coaches, and front office staff--to me to the point of overkill. Not sure Terry Ryan sees things the same way, though he really should. I do think that Suzuki is probably better than he has been the last couple of years, but not as good as he is this year. He had a couple of decent years to start his career, so there is some talent there. Bottom line, the Twins have not been good at selling high over the last few years, I'd like to see them start with Suzuki this year. If their hearts are set on bringing him back next year, he'll be a FA in the off-season and they can take another run at him. If he isn't willing to sign now for what they want to offer, it makes no sense to keep him, if they can get any sort of decent prospect in return.
  12. Changed my mind and headed to the game, with a cheap seat from Stubhub. Glad I did. Nice performance from the Twins loved how Swarzak finished things in the fifth and was great to see Arcia beat the shift with a 2B to left. That will endear him to the manager for awhile I think. Admit to biting my nails when they brought Duensing in with 2 out in the ninth instead of Perkins. Seemed like a perfect spot for a 4 out save to me. But worked put ok. Best alcohol deal at the park is the $5.50 shot of Knob Creek from he Rib stand. Every other drink is at least $7 isn't it. Admit to enjoying some of the Bourbon today!
  13. Just having a flashback to a similar situation a couple of years ago. Marquis vs. Lowe. It was awful, Marquis was slow, wild and terrible and Lowe was mowing thru the Twins lineup like they were little league players. I figure I can enjoy the weather without blowing $50 plus on tickets, parking etc. Just too bad the product isn't just a bit better.
  14. Got a day off today and was thinking of enjoying some sunshine at the ballpark. Then I heard Swarzak was starting. Not sure I want to invest the $ in watching this one in person. It may not go in favor of the home team. Does that make me a bad fan, or just cheap?
  15. And if all you have is a bunch of average players, the best you can ever hope for is to be an average team. Not railing on Plouffe, just believe in higher expectations. At this point, it's probably as good as its going to get with him. Winning teams have better than average players at most positions.
  16. Yes, generally not a stat that is a reflection of the guys true contribution since you are so dependent on others in the lineup, and where you are hitting. However, for Dozier to dot his in an otherwise crappy lineup is a pretty impressive feat. Reusee is so anti-sabermetric that I don't even listen to his thoughts on baseball anymore. He's so closed minded on "new statistics" that it discredits his obvious baseball acumen.
  17. Well, I think we've seen enough of Plouffe to know that he may be adequate on a bad team. He is not a starting 3B on a championship level team. The Twins seem to be happy with accepting mediocrity, and embedding guys like Plouffe in the lineup, but winning teams look to improve when they have a guy like him starting at a key position. I think it's safe to say that he is what he is at this point.
  18. I don't know for sure, but I had heard that most MLB teams had moved away from advanced scouts. I think teams are relying more on video and other reports in place of the advance scouts these days.
  19. Couldn't agree more. This is especially true in baseball where the "hit rate" for prospects, even HIGHLY rated ones is pretty low. At least the Wild appear to be intent on trying to win.
  20. Iginla just replaces Statsny for the Avs, probably a downgrade at this point (unless they are playing the Wild). The Avs also traded for Daniel Briere, which is an upgrade. Sabres re-signed Moulson and McCormick - was a very expensive rental for the Wild, I guess. Don't know why more teams don't try the same thing with FA to-be veterans when they are out of it. Great deal for them.
  21. Agreed, the Vanek deal sure looks good right now. Hopefully, whatever he did that ticked the Canadiens off enough to demote him to the 4th line isn't a sign of things to come. I think it's exactly the type of deal the Wild need to make right now, though. Would love to see them find another top Defenseman now to take the pressure off Suter. Someone that is strong in front of the goal, but can also move the puck. If they can add that, the young players improve and they manage to get a couple of healthy goalies, they would certainly be in position to compete with the Blackhawks and Kings for a shot at the Cup. Keep it going Fletcher!!
  22. 7,500,000 sounds like a lot, but based upon a net worth around 2 Billion, it's quite modest. Less than a grand for someone with a net worth of 250k. It's all relative.
  23. To me, it seems like they think they are smarter than everyone else and can bring in guys with questionable track records and turn them into good players. They've been doing this for some time now, and their track record is not good. I would much rather have them spend 15 Million for a guy everyone knows will be good than 5 million each on three question marks like Corriea, Pelfry, etc.
  24. I wouldn't mind dealing for either of those guys, but don't really think either team is going to deal their starting CF while still in contention. I also still don't think it makes sense to just deal for someone with an expiring contract...for the same reason that it didn't make sense to count on Sano coming into this year. The Twins do not currently have a CF playing above A ball that looks like a future major league player. We can't go into 2015 with the same kind of mess and hopes that we have the last couple of years at a key position like that.
