1. Looking at the weather, isn't it possible that the next couple of games are postponed anyway? We might not even see Arcia before Ramirez returns. If they do play, I think he'll probably be a bench player and maybe start one game. This is one of those times the Twins just want to give him a taste of MLB and also give the Major League staff a chance to see how he reacts to the bigs.
2. I don't think the streaming rules apply to preseason. At least in years past I could find games to listen to prior to the start of the regular season.
3. Last night Ryan did say they still were trying to add a couple of guys to the mix. I'm not sure who else is out there at this point, so maybe? We can hope, though I think Saunders is at best a #4 or 5 guy. Still better than what we have though.
4. Well, on ESPN 1500 last night I heard Terry Ryan say you can never have too many good pitchers. He mentioned he wanted to have a large volume of guys, so they would have to compete for a job. I don't think they guys you mention, other than Hendricks have much of a future on the big league roster, so if someone better comes along then you move on from guys like Walters and Devries and either move them to the pen or drop them altogether. I don't think there is any reason to not acquire a pitcher than can help you if you are the Twins, there just aren't that many good pitchers to worry about blocking anyone right now.
5. Uggh, we paid more for Pelfry coming off of TJ surgery than the Mets guaranteed Marcum? Who knows on this one, maybe he really wanted to stay in the NL, maybe the Twins saw something in the medical records that led them to believe he couldn't throw anymore - though he did pass the Mets physical. In any event, it does appear that Marcum is another guy who looks to be superior to the guys the Twins signed, and took less that what we paid for guys like Correia and Pelfry. Again, are the Twins really not properly evaluating these guys, do they not want to play here? I have a difficult time with that premise, particularly for Pitchers. It's pretty disappointing as a fan.
6. This is a ridiculous question - if the Twins never attempt to sign a top tier free agent, how do we ever know if one would come here. Seeing as other major MN franchises, such as the Vikings, Wild, etc. haven't seem to have a problem attracting top players to MN I have serious doubts that the area is much a of limiting factor. Minneapolis ain't exactly Cleveland you know. Seriously??
7. These are my feelings as well. Marcum's arm troubles could be the end of his career for all we know. It's just that it seems as though Ryan is operating with some set of rules that no other teams are. And for the record, while signing Saunders will be an improvement, he was actually one of the guys I thought the Twins should avoid, his upside is very limited but he'll get paid more than other FAs because of his W/L record. It just seems to me that Ryan either is a poor judge of talent when it comes to pitching or he doesn't understand the pitching market anymore. With the Twins situation, resources and the mid to low-level talent in this years FA pool, he could have easily added 2-3 more guys that would have been a huge upgrade over what we had - guys that had upside and could have been flipped at the deadline for talent that could help us in 2014 or 15. Let's not forget Toronto was able to turn Marcum into Brett Lawrie just two years ago - and he had a history of arm trouble prior to that deal.
8. And where is the Twins track record of being able to identify these previously unseen skills in pitchers, was it Marquis? Ponson? R.Martinez, Hernandez, etc. The Twins don't have a track record of "fixing" pitchers with poor skill set, if anything, many of them get worse when the arrive here and then rebound slightly when moving on somewhere else.
9. It will be interesting to hear how much the contract is for, but if it's in the 7 - 8 Mil range like others have been getting then it is sure frustrating that the Twins weren't in. Seems Mr. Ryan has some sort of unannounced cap and won't spend more than $5 mil/season on FA pitcher, regardless of the skill/talent level. No wonder our Pitching has been so pathetic, if the guy making decisions refuses to pay market value for quality, preferring to overspend for guys with limited skills and poor track records. It makes no sense.
10. Uggh, this is why I have such little confidence in TR ability to build the Twins into a World Series contender. I hope I'm wrong about this, but any serious run at rebuilding has to be based upon a combination of scouting and stats. It seems over and over again when those two are in conflict, Ryan choses the scouts, and over the last few years, that has been disaster, yet he doesn't seem to learn from it.
11. They are both horrible. Very depressing that this is the best they are willing to do. At least Inge is a decent fielder, but really, why bother with these rejects?
12. Well last year Villanueva had a k/9 rate of 8.4 as a starter, but that appears to be an anomaly, as it's been in the 5s previously as a starter. I would much prefer to have Villanueva though, solely for the potential upside. If they've been similar results wise in the past, wouldn't you rather have the guy with at least the potential to move up into a # 3-4 role? Corriera has proven he's nothing but a back of the rotation guy, at best. I think you are underestimating the move from the NL to the AL as well. It's hard to find too many examples of soft tossing guys moving to the AL and not getting worse. Now I certainly would have rather seen us invest in guys like McCarthy, Marcum or Jackson than either of these two, but apparently that's not possible with the current brain trust running the team.
13. He's the kind of guy they should be targeting. If you're going to bring in a bunch of arms, they might as well be big risk, big reward types like Harden. They need to find another 3-4 guys like this and bring them all in knowing that only 1-2 of them will pan out, but if so, will be way better than guys like Corriera and Pelfry.
14. Putting aside the fact that even Fangraphs thinks that WAR for pitchers has problems, I don't for a minute think 2.6 wins is meaningful to a team that lost 95 games. Let's not forget that last year was Correia's best in the last 3, if he regresses further that 2.6wins might turn into 1 or zero wins. I don't see the point in spending the 5 million for a guy who is going to be negligibly better than any old guy in the system. If the Twins had 4good starters already and were just looking a #5, it might be a different story.
15. Olmedo fits right in with the rest of the Twins MI, though I don't know if he can field - in just over 480 Major League ABs he's managed to hit .230 with a .566 OPS. He spent some time with White Sox last year, but he's been playing in AAA most of the last 10 years. Probably just organizational filler at this point. Hopefully he doesn't show signs of hustle in spring training causing Gardenhire to name him the starting shortstop.
16. To see how other players are projected go to www.baseball-reference.com and then search for the pitcher in question. Click on the "more stats" tab above their pitching stats. Then after the page repaints, scroll down until you see the neutralized pitching stats. You can pick the year, league and team there, so if you want to see how Pavano would have played out in the Metrodome circa 1983, you can. There are links near the stats that explain the calculation, it basically applies adjustments based upon the league, era, park, etc.
17. Good question. Based upon the lack of movement it looks like the Twins plan to go forward with what they have. I think Kelly Johnson is still out there, perhaps a late signing like Hudson a few years ago is possible if no one else shows interest in him. He's not great, but an upgrade offensively over Florimon or Escobar. It was interesting how Ryan called for competition at 3B, but has been pretty silent about doing anything up the middle. Shouldn't be surprising based upon the guys we've had up the middle during most of Ryan/Gardenhire's time here though I guess.
18. Riverbrian - Jackson checks in at a 4.40 ERA and a 1.288 WHIP on the baseball-reference tool for 2012. The ERA is higher than you'd like to see, but the WHIP is pretty good for a starter.
19. I didn't, but not sure what difference it makes. This points to the divide among those that think it's an ok or good signing vs. those of us that don't like it. If the Twins lose 5-4 instead of 6-4 it's still a loss as far as I'm concerned. They should be trying to find guys that are going to help them win, not just help them lose by less. Correia is simply going to be a guy that might help them lose by less than what they have the last few years. Not satisfying to me. You can't build a quality rotation around guys that are 4-th 5th starters around the rest of the league and this points to trying to do that.
20. I just saw on another blog that Baseball Reference has a cool little tool that allows you to adjusts a players stats for a year to other teams/league. Here are the results when I put Correia's 2012 line, his BEST season in 3 years, into the 2012 Twins:

2012 31 7 11 .389 4.91 163 186 98 89 21 49 85 3 1.442 32

Looks pretty ugly and not worth investing 2 years in the guy. I know these just calculations/estimates, but they are based upon sound mathematics anyway.
21. Some great posts here. I tend think some of the disagreement is based upon different views of what the Twins should be trying to accomplish. I for one am disappointed in the signing because it shows the Twins don't seem to care about actually winning and that they really don't understand or care about acquiring the types of pitchers that can consistently help them win games. I think others are pretty satisfied that at least we got someone that has a major league resume and won't drool all over himself when on the mound. I will say that based upon Correia's track record, there is nothing to suggest he's going to be better than what he was last year, and many more possibilities that he will be worse, the most important being the move to the AL and having to face 9 real hitters many nights.
22. Of course, based upon Mr. Ryan's track record regarding FA pitchers we really shouldn't be surprised. I'm really starting to wonder if he really is as stubborn about pitching as some of us only thought. It's almost like he brings in guys like Correia, Marquis, Martinez, Ponson, etc. to prove the paying Free Agents doesn't work. It seems he finds joy in being contrary and purposely finding guys with low strike out rates. I may have missed one, but I am pretty sure that Diamond had the lowest K/9 rate among LH qualifiers and Correia had the lowest rate among RH Qualifiers last year. If only we could add a couple more soft tossers to the mix that would solve everything!
23. Well, we don't know if Correia bitches and moans, but we do know he's guaranteed 10 million over the next 2 years. As someone who sat through one of Marquis gawd-awful starts at Target field last year, I don't see anything in Correia's history to suggest the results are going to be much different, other than we are now on the hook for 2 years making it harder to cut bait if necessary. Seriously if you aren't even good enough to be the 5th starter on the Pirates, why are the Twins guaranteeing you 2 years salary? Who were they competing with?
24. The most disappointing thing about this isn't the signing/player itself. It's that it shows that Ryan still doesn't "get it" when it comes to acquiring pitchers. I was hoping that recent moves to acquire guys like Meyers, May, Worley, and the draft picks meant he understood that the traditional W-L and ERA stats were not the best to base decisions on. Yet, here he is out there paying a premium for a guy that only looks okay if you just look at his W-L record. There really isn't any reason to believe Correia is going to be any better than a handful of guys the Twins already have on their roster at or close to the league minimum. I just don't get investing 2 years at 5 million each in a guy like this. Goes back to what a lot have been saying over the last year, it's not that Twins don't spend enough, it's that they don't spend wisely.
25. Well it's pretty well implies if you think he's the guy to start the most of all the Twins young pitchers over the next 5 years. My comment was more to the general amount of praise Diamond is receiving. He has a decent season, but we've seen that from multiple other guys with the same sort of talent over the past few years and generally they don't repeat. Maybe I should put it this way...If Diamond is the one of these guys with the most starts over the next 5 years most of us are going to be very disappointed in the Twins performance over that period of time.
