  1. We'll see, I bet he catches whenever Pavano starts though. The Twins aren't so deep that they can afford the luxury of carrying 3 catchers, especially while they are carrying 13 pitchers, it makes no sense to have a guy on your bench that you can't count on to pinch hit or pinch run, just "in case" one of your other catchers gets hurt. It's stupid, and no amount of trying to say it's not a big deal changes that fact. If he's not going to play much, then why bother having him on the bench? It's a waste of resources, especially when your bench is already too thin.
  2. Yes, starting to look a lot like last years bench, unfortunately. If Morneau is headed to DL, seems like a perfect time to call up Revere. He can platoon in right with Plouffe, put Doumit at DH and Parmalee at 1B. Much better than dealing with Clete and/or Butera in the lineup most days and YOU know that is going to happen. Gardy's fascination with backup catchers wins out again. Sorry guys, you can try and spin this in a positive light all you want. There is no reason for Drew Butera to be on a major league roster at this point in his career, he is a net negative, you might as well have your pitcher hit.
  3. There's no doubt that Hughes has a higher possibility of performing better in the future. Inge is probably on his final MLB breaths. However, as far as value is concerned don't forget Oakland also has a pretty young pitching staff. There is some value in having good fielders behind young pitchers to help build their confidence. Hughes has never been and is never going to be a good defensive player, errors or not. I think they A's decided whatever potential future upside Hughes might offer was outweighed by Inge's current stability. I don't think they were wrong.
  4. There is nothing stopping Ryan from clearing a 40 man spot, claiming Hughes and then trying the same move. Teams usually don't re-claim a guy, since they already decided to move on when they move the player off the 40 man to begin with.
  5. Have to agree with Mr. Ed. Twins management has never shown an inclination to use Slama at the major league level and Manship has never impressed me. As bad as the Twins pitching has been this year, if they thought he could help, wouldn't he be here already? I see Manship and Swarzak as basically the same pitcher, and you should hopefully only need one long guy in the pen. If Guerra shows anything at AAA the Twins need to get him to the majors to see if he's going to be part of the solution next year and beyond. The other two guys are just possible filler at this point. I hope the Twins have gotten beyond the "he's been here longer, so he's he's next in line" stage.
  6. Yes, we know the bullpen is pretty suspect, and the offense has been very hot & cold so far, but if the starting pitching doesn't get better, we also know we are in for another 90+ loss season. Sad part is we just have to hope it gets better as it's not like we have a lot of choices we can run out their in place of the guys currently struggling. Don't worry though, "Starting Pitching is a strength of the Team" according the GM prior to the season.
  7. Please explain, "wreck everything". Twins pitching is absolutely horrible right now, how could you wreck it more than it already is wrecked?
  8. Uggh, talk about rearranging deck charges on the Titanic! I see no benefit to moving Swarzak to the rotation, he's the same kind of guy we already have there. Blackburn has shown the ability to get hot for a month at a time in the past, we are going to have to keep running him out there and hope for the best. I'd like to see Diamond and Devries continue to perform at AAA for another month or 2 before bringing either of them up, but I don't have confidence that either of them will be much of an upgrade. I'm not against the idea of trying Liriano as closer, I think that he'd be successful there. It's just hard to swallow, since if he's effective he is so much more valuable as a starter. I'd give him another couple starts to see if his time off helped, and if not, flip him to the pen. So, not to be too negative, but the lack of activity in the offseason has really tied the Twins hands. I have serious doubts that there is anything they can do with current personnel that will make much of a difference. I'm hoping some of these guys start performing better and that will probably happen and in all likelihood that's probably the best that can happen.
  9. Definitely good to see Guerra move up. Hopefully he continues to perform well in AAA and we'll see him in a Twins uniform before too long.
  10. I gotta go with inside the park as well. He's bound to hit a can of corn over a pulled in outfield at some point in time, and then it's just up to his legs and Steve Liddle to make it happen.
  11. I'm hoping they figure out a way to turn some more of these picks into a 2nd rounder so they can get one of the WR's left on the board. If they add a potential impact receiver they will have addressed three huge areas of need in one draft. I think they figure that Winfield and Cook are going to start at CB and now Smith and one of the hold overs are their Safetys. It's time to get another weapon for Ponder --though they could really use a MLB too!
  12. As a sometimes complainer, let me add my thoughts... 1) Mauer's contract, don't think I have ever really complained about it. The Twins were in a no-win situation at the time they signed him. He was coming off an MVP season, was a hometown guy, and they were a year away from opening a publicly financed stadium. They could either bite the bullet and over pay, or risk losing him and dealing with tremendous public backlash. I also think he's more valuable than people give credit for. There just aren't that many Catchers in the league that provide offensive value. I do think the Twins ownership could have been wiser, and treated the contract as a special deal and excluded it from the team budget, since so much of it's value was based upon "goodwill". We've seen other teams do this from time to time for special players, and let's be honest, it's not like the Pohlad's can't afford a little goodwill, in more ways than one. 2) I do complain about the publicly financed stadium, but only in the realm that the owner's indicated that without it we couldn't compete financially, and now it seems that with it, we still can't compete financially. Even though Twins fans have been good customers and bought tickets, paid for concessions etc. I think it was a cold slap in the face for the team to cut payroll by almost 15% this year. 3) I really haven't seen much complaining about Mourneau's toughness. I've seen plenty about Mauer, but most just want Mourneau to get better and hopefully contribute again. I think you're stretching for a #3 on this one.
  13. I'll keep watching, because that's what we do when we're fans. I probably won't be as excited to go to a game, but will take advantage of some of those cheap tickets. Lets keep telling ourselves it is only April and things can change quickly.
  14. I don't disagree with the sentiment regarding the Twins decision making process, but if it's any consolation, Hughes was 0-3 with 2 errors in his debut for the A's. What is more concerning is Ryan's comments before the season that the starting pitching was a strength. This is the guy we think can fix things? I hope we've just had bad luck and it turns around, but I'm not very confident.
  15. Well, I think the Twins are foolish to leave him in low A if the Pitchers aren't going to throw him any strikes. If that continues for another month and he proves he can lay off those pitches, they certainly should promote him and let him face pitchers that will throw him strikes. He's not going to get better watching pitches every at bat.
  16. Considering the current 3B situation in Oakland, it wouldn't surprise me to see Hughes installed as their starting 3B. If so, we'll get to see if there was anything there, or if the Twins were right to move on.
  17. You make a great point. We all like the saves, and many of us are expecting an implosion any time now. We hope that it doesn't happen until we think about his option for next year, and then, well I can't speak for everyone else, but my brain just kind of locks up. With the Twins current spending habits, I'd just as soon not see them commit 6+million to a closer who has been up and down as much as Capps over the last 4 years. Of course I want to see him pile up saves, though.
  18. It sure is frustrating to watch when then hit into the DPs or when they fail to move a runner over with no outs and end up stranding him. But compared to last year, you at least feel they have a chance to do something.
  19. Too bad the Twins didn't have any broken down, old Center Fielders like Byrd to deal for him. If Bowden could have been had for Thomas, I would have done that deal in a second. Of course, we'll never know if the Twins made an effort to land Bowden or not, and if so, what they offered. It really doesn't sound like the Sox got much, though.
  20. I haven't seen enough of Parmalee to see if can play RF or not, but the Twins must agree with your assessment, based upon the limited appearances there. At the major league level he has hit well, though and it would be nice to get his bat in the lineup regularly. I would rather see Plouffe out there everyday than Thomas as well. I doubt he'll produce any less offensively, and he's athletic enough to be a decent fielder, if not experienced. Reality is that with our lineup, we should not be basing our starting RF on who has the best glove. You can get away with that to a large extent up the middle, but seriously, going with a corner OF because he's your best glove guy doesn't make sense to me. Whoever it is, I don't really like see Thomas take regular at bats from pretty much any of the possibilities on the Twins roster right now (Parmalee, Doumit, Plouffe, heck even Burroughs, who I still don't get why he's on the roster).
  21. I hate playing word games with someone who is obviously better at it than me, but when you say "there's the other issue that the teams that do hit into a lot are teams that put a lot of people on base (amazing, right!?!?)" I take that to mean putting guys on base, or OBP. My mistake, sorry for confusing your words once again. CDog, I have know idea who you are, what your background is, etc. someday you and I might meet and enjoy a beverage together, but to be honest your posts here are difficult for me to understand, much as my posts might be difficult for you to understand since I don't post clearly or even understand big words like correlation. Being as that's the case perhaps you can just ignore my posts from now on. I obviously am not schooled enough to post in a manner elegant enough for you to understand. As for shill, I do understand what that means, you can look it up as well.
  22. Well, I'm going to disagree, they replaced all of the field staff except the hitting coach and their GM/President, what else could they have done to clean house, hire Merry Maids? There are more subtle ways of cleaning house than flat out firing people. If you have someone like Epstein you want to move on, you simply take away his power, knowing he has options and won't stand for it. Epstein grew up a Red Sox fan, always dreamed of working for the team and made it to the pinnacle of the organization, do you really think he went to the owners on 10/1 and said I'd really like to look for a new, better, job?
  23. I agree with both you and John, which doesn't really make sense, but Parmalee was facing Robertson who is really nasty. I think if it had been a lesser pitcher, which is almost every other reliever in the league, I'd want him swinging to try and move the runner over and get on base if possible. But, in this case, I'd have asked for the bunt.
  24. I just couldn't let this go, simply because I got a great chuckle out of it (at least in my little mind). Francona quit, much the same way Richard Nixon quit. You can chose to believe whatever spin you want, but if the Sox wanted him to stay they'd have picked up his option and he'd still be there.
  25. Well, shoot, I suppose by the time we are ready to make a move Casilla will have some sort of injury requiring attention. Doesn't it seem every time he starts playing well, the injury bug hits? If that's the case, I think we'll see Dozier. If not, then it will probably be a 3rd catcher, it will probably be Butera, isn't he the only one on the 40 man? I personally would rather see one of the other 2, fairly ugly, choices just because I don't think calling one of those guys up and then exposing him to waivers if you want to send him back down is that big of a deal. But the Twins management is typically more attached to guys they signed than I am and tend to protect them, so...Butera. UGGH! And if so, you just know he'll be catching Pavano every 5th day, despite the #s saying Pavano pitches better with Joe catching him.
