  1. Pitchers should be rested now with a day off and some good starts. Even tonight Molitor didn't empty the bullpen. I would go back down to 12. DFA Jepsen.
  2. Without actually seeing the pitchers or having pitch level data, it is not possible to compare. Any argument using the data would have little meaning. The best we have is the scouting reports from groups that see players from all organizations. I am not sure that Gonsalves is highly regarded either. There was question about how his stuff would play beyond A ball. If the Twins were contending for the playoffs and needing to trade for late inning relief this year, Gonsalves would be a reasonable and expected cost.
  3. I doubt there is much meaning in those minor league numbers. What is the velocity? Does it maintain through 100 pitches? Which pitches are getting the swings and misses? Will those same pitches generate swings and misses at the major league level? Does the pitcher have command as well as control? Liam Hendriks had great stat lines.
  4. Pitchers are going to decline ages 32-35. They are going to be injured more frequently. A player needs to be very good entering those ages to return in a good performance in that span. If you are league average ages 26-31, there is a good chance you won't be very useful by age 35. The performance and health that the Twins are getting from Santana, Nolasco and Hughes is well within what should have been expected. Terry Ryan is 100% responsible for those decisions. http://twinsdaily.com/blog/36/entry-6349-what-can-the-twins-expect-from-santana-and-nolasco/
  5. The next time Berrios and Chargois come up needs to be the last time. Once up, they need to let the work out any struggles at the major league level. Once they are confident there is nothing else to learn at AAA, bring them up. I don't think we can assess that readiness with a stat line though.
  6. When comparing stats at positions it is really hard to see how Dozier gets the All Star spot. He is the best the Twins have to offer but there are so many middle infielders more deserving. Mauer compares better at first than Dozier or Nunez do as middle infielders. Looking at offensive numbers. At catcher, Perez is the only stand out. Wieters is next. After that Castro and Vogt are having slightly better seasons that Suzuki. It would probably be easier for the AL to justify Suzuki's spot on the team. Mix in defense which is hard to measure and Suzuki doesn't look as good. There is no deserving Twin. It might be easiest for the league to stash Abad on the team.
  7. We have to go back to June 5 for Park to find 6 hits (6 for last 56).
  8. It also might help to have played three days in a row. He did that twice with the Twins this year. The last being May 6-8.
  9. If no one in the league equates playing SS and 3B poorly with defensive versatility and the best offer is a C/C+ prospect with a rule 5 decision coming up, do you take the best offer? The Mets gave up a C+ prospect and a prospect outside the top 20 for Juan Uribe (and Kelly Johnson) last year. John Gant was up for rule 5. He was recently called up to the majors. At the time Sickels wrote that he was a innings eating 5th starter type. The other player, Whalen, had a better ceiling but also a likelihood of a back end starter or bullpen arm. Uribe is an excellent defensive 3B and was hitting well. I would think his overall game has more value in helping a team reach the playoffs. Kelly Johnson had an OPS of .772 at the time of the trade. Both guys were key players for the Mets in the second half. Their return was good but not the level many on this site are hoping for Nunez. The Twins might expect one of those two for Nunez. Do you trade Nunez for a guy who projects to be a back end starter with the need to be put on the 40 in the winter?
  10. Rosario hurt the team in the field this year with several balls he misjudged into extra base hits and poor decisions on throws and cut offs. It is partly the aggressive nature he brings to every aspect of his game. It is also something that can get better with time and commitment.
  11. Keep playing Buxton. They should have kept him in AAA, but once they brought hi they need to stick with him. Rosario in the same sample as Buxton is doing well in AAA. The can't make decisions based in that sample. If they want to add Rosario into the LF mix with Grossman that's OK. It could be an odd platoon based on plate discipline and opposing pitcher. He is up instead of a 13th pitcher and not Buxton.
  12. ZIPS projection of 106 wRC+ for Dozier is a match for his performance at the moment. That performance is slightly above the typical performance at 2B. The Twins need more of these guys. Not less. Any trade needs to bring a valuable piece to the 2017 team.
  13. Gourriel and Valencia might need to go first before teams look to Plouffe or Nunez. Escobar and Solarte are probably also available and might be better fits. The Royals value defense do it is hard to see them taking Nunez. I don't think they would equate versatility with having played several positions poorly. They probably have a better solution in Cuthbert than Plouffe or Nunez. The Indians have some flexibility. They can put Jose Ramirez at 3B. The supply might be greater than the demand. The best option could be to keep Nunez for 2017.
  14. The availability of Gourriel, Reyes and Infante into the 2B/3B market will decrease demand. Teams looking to move players at those positions might need to wait until those three find a team.
  15. No one seriously believes players ride a roller coaster of value. Do they? Suzuki's skill level hasn't changed in the last month. Teams know that slash stats need a full season of sample if you are looking for a skill change. Suzuki might fit as a back up catcher on a few teams assuming they don't buy into framing and don't care about throwing out runners.
  16. I think a reasonable expectation of return for Suzuki is a player that is using his last option. Maybe a guy like Kennys Vargas this year or Michael Tonkin last year. A guy like Alex Pressley when the Twins acquired him a few years ago for Morneau. If the Twins demand a young player (particularly one that isn't even on the 40 yet), I go find a different back up catcher.
  17. Where is the market for Kurt? Look at the bottom 10 in wOBA at catcher. Dodgers? Is Suzuki an upgrade over Grandal and Barnes? Red Sox? They have shown their preference for defense from catcher by moving Swihart. They have very good defenders in Sanchez and Hannigan. Indians? Gomes. Mets? D'Arnaud is back Blue Jays? Martin. Martin and Gomes are not hitting as well as Suzuki. I can't imagine that either team would see Suzuki as a second half upgrade with the bat and he certainly isn't with the glove. If a team is looking for a catcher don't they go after Lucroy or maybe even Vogt or Norris? Chris Herrmann might be viewed as a better alternative. There might be a team that sees Suzuki as veteran back up insurance. He might be claimed on August waivers. He isn't going to return anything of significance. It isn't going to shift the Twins outlook for the future whether Ryan does his job or not. Ryan might be better off waiting to see if someone loses their catcher for the season in August and is desperate. Getting guys like Lucroy is no longer an option. Waiting for something that might not happen has the side effect of a trade not taking place.
  18. I would go him one more start and extend May in rehab. If start doesn't go well, call back Dean.
  19. I would give up a lot in prospects to get an established 26 year old starting pitcher. There is nothing in free agency. There isn't enough in the organization. I don't see any other way of getting starting pitching. What if it takes Gonsalves and Polanco to get a guy like Odorizzi? Would you do it? Is it enough?
  20. Buxton struggles with plate discipline in the majors and then dominates AAA in 129 PAs. He returns to the majors and struggles with plate discipline. Maybe it wasn't enough time in AAA. Solution - call up Rosario and his 126 PAs dominating AAA.
  21. Oscar Hernandez might be a closer example then. Cabrera was 21 In low A. Young prospects at low levels need to be protected. Though they are years from being successful, teams can't risk losing the upside. Better to lose a Gilmartin.
  22. I assume success means that the player was lost to the organization. Rule 5 guys often spend their second year with the acquiring club in the minors. They still have options. For example Oscar Hernandez was taken by Arizona a year ago. He played as a 20 year old in A-Ball with Tampa Bay.. He spent last year at the end of the bench and is now in high A with Arizona doing well.
