  1. I think there is a little too much emphasis on him not hitting a HR yet. He's not a power hitter and was never going to be. Everyone knows this. Other teams know this which is why pitchers throw strikes to him. You're not going to get burnt that bad by him (as in give up a HR). It makes sense that he wouldn't walk as much if he's not seeing balls. I think the walk rate will go up this year. I think teams are going to start to realize that they have to pitch him a little more carefully because he makes some solid contact (or in theory can run out many hits). Just my theory for now.
  2. That's why it's in "The Sports Bar" section of the forum, because it has nothing to do with baseball. This is pretty much exactly what the section is meant for.
  3. Sure did. I almost hate to admit that. Although, I won't hate it if I win tonight.
  4. It was a good read. I did not cut back on my season tickets this year. I actually got more games. That has more to do with other people in the group that I buy tickets with dropping out and taking less games than me being really excited to go games though. Yes, the Twins were bad last year, and 2013 might not be much better, but even watching a bad baseball game in person is better than most things I could be doing. I completely agree with and understand the frustration though.
  5. If the Marlins win 50 games he should be Manager of the Year. If they win 60 games does he get a statue in front of the stadium?
  6. That Buehrle contract is backloaded in a very unappealing way. Other than that though... this sounds like a deal that the commish probably should have blocked as to not have the city of Miami hate baseball forever. This is just one of those deals that makes you think "What!?! Really!?! No.... this is some sort of joke, right?" At least that was my reaction when I first read about it.
  7. Not to change the subject, but I think you're mistaken about Florimon being passed on by 31 other teams. He played for the Orioles previously, and he was placed on waivers last off season. I'm pretty sure that the Twins had the first shot at a waiver claim to him last year because of their horrible record in 2011 and he was placed on waivers by another AL team. So the reality is, he was passed up by zero teams before the Twins claimed him. As for Drew, if he were willing to sign for cheap, it might be an interesting pickup. If he's still around in February, then I'd start asking him what it would take. Right now, I'd be putting on the blinders and only looking at pitching. As bad as the middle infield has been for the Twins recently, the pitching has been far worse (I know, it has been said before and we all already know it). I think you just have to stay focused on the pitching right now. Drew is one of those "nice to have if he's healthy" kind of guys that we should be looking at a little later in the off season.
  8. The Dodgers have won the bidding for him with a bid of $25,737,737.33. I didn't think an $8-10 million would do it. Let's hope the Twins actually did make a bid at least.
  9. I've seen the Forbes data too. Here's a link to the article: http://www.forbes.com/mlb-valuations/#p_2_s_a0_ They list the working capital, which isn't the same as net income. I found a link that talks about the linked financial statements for those that are interested: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/about-those-leaked-financial-statements/ I think the part that is the most pertinent to this conversation is the section that shows operating income for the Pirates and the Ray in 2007 and 2008. In both 2007 and 2008 the Rays net income was roughly $10M less than the operating income. Hence, profit is not equal to operating income. There's no way for the common fan to find out exactly what the net income (a.k.a net profit) for the Twins really is without their financial statement getting leaked. I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, I just want to make sure people are clear that the Twins aren't profiting that $16.6M reported in Forbes. There's a little more to it than that. Or maybe I've just been too entrenched in my MBA classes and need to get a life.
  10. There absolutely isn't any reason that it couldn't all go to payroll. It won't though. I have read many quotes from the Twins saying that they put about 50% of revenue into payroll. (I don't have a link to verify this right now, but with a little google, you could find it. I think this is pretty widely known though). So, it's not unreasonable to think that if revenue increased by $25M, that payroll would only go up by about $12.5M. Obviously, that's just an average as well. Some clubs will probably use more or less of that money, depending on the club. I would suspect that the Rays probably wouldn't use as much as a larger market team, but we won't really know until it happens.
  11. but there payroll went down 18.4 from 2011 to 2012 already, and twins llc claimed to have earned 26 million in profit while some have speculated they actually earned closer to 60 million... just jipppy squeezing more from the team ,same old ,same old...thanks for the new stadium folks now watch the worst team in the a.l. while i count my profits Where did you find that Twins LLC earned $26M in profit? I have seen some financial estimates on baseball teams, but I've only seen two real financial statements, and those were leaked during the early 2000's, I believe, and neither were from the Twins. Baseball teams are private companies that hold their financial information very close to the chest. I've never heard of a team intentionally disclosing profits to the public. Are you sure you saw profit and not working capital or something like that? I would like to see a link if you find that.
  12. I think this was a very good assessment. I think you're probably right about all of this. I'm hoping that the Twins will go against their old ways and sign some decent starting pitching, but it is really hard to believe that they will actually do this. Good post.
  13. Both the Twins claims and the Cassila things are on MLBTraderumors.com. They usually post pretty reliable information that they get from beat writers and agents, etc.
  14. I don't know if it'll have the same effect as it did when he was a player. I was hoping that the Twins would find a place for him somewhere, but they were too slow. I wish him luck.
  15. I think you nailed it with Houston. It sounds like Detroit doesn't want him back since they will have Victor Martinez back at the DH spot. I'm going to just assume that that the original post asking if the Twins should be interested was a joke.
  16. Well, it took Oakland $19.1 Million to win the bid on Iwakuma after 2010. I'm not sure they had to bid that high, but that's what one. I'm not suggesting the Twins bid that high, but with how badly the Twins need pitching, I think they should really consider putting in a decent bid. At least the Iwakuma bid could be used as a reference. If I remember reading it correctly, the Twins were second in the bidding for him when he was posted. All bids are secret, so we don't know how much they put in for him. I like the idea of going after a 25 year old better than when they made the push for Iwakuma (who was 30 at the time).
  17. Seeing as how he would go through the posting system is what really interested me about this guy. I'm not sure that they should compare him to Nishi either. Hyun-jin Ryu made South Korea's Olympic team and the WBC team (2010). He did pretty well in both events and there is some pretty decent competition there at least. He's been averaging a good amount of innings in the KBO. It's hard to tell exactly how well he'll translate to the MLB, but I could see him becoming a decent starter. Here are his lines from the Olympic and WBC: Olympics: 2-0; 1.04 ERA (2 G, 17.1 IP, 2 ER, 13 K) WBC: 1-0; 2.57 ERA (5 G, 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 K) The wikipedia link has his lines from the past 6 years in the KBO as well. I thought I would pose the question to everyone here. The Twins obviously need pitching, and it would be great to get a young pitcher that already has a lot of scouting done on him. I think the Twins should really make a push for this guy. I don't think he'll be an ace or anything like that, but if the secondary pitches are as good as the scouting reports say, he could still be an asset.
  18. According to MLB trade rumors, the South Korean starting pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu will be posted this offseaso http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/hanwha-eagles-to-post-hyun-jin-ryu.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29 Do you think the Twins should be interested? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryu_Hyun-Jin
  19. You mean his 6th season at the age of 23, right? It's not like he's old.
  20. He was the hitting coach for the Mariners in 2006 and that didn't work out all that well. I don't think a lack of MLB managing experience should rule him out completely. As the article says, he was a bench coach for TK. And other managers have done well without any experience. Look at what Robin Ventura did with the White Sox this year...
  21. No. Double no. He may have one or two decent years left, but I the PEDs are wearing off and it's going to start to show. I think Miami is the only place he wouldn't veto a trade anyway. Maybe Chicago.
  22. You weren't the only one, I drew a big 0-fer as well. Me too. Many of my friends that don't post on TD were cheering for the same teams as well.
  23. Thanks for the update. Can you post where you got the numbers from? Just for clarification, I do know how to use google, I just figured if you're going to update everyone, you might as well throw in links, right?
  24. Not for the $5 mil suggested, but $2-3, maybe. It's such a tough call because of how inconsistent he is. Overall, we have an idea of what he's going to give you and I think it's time where the Twins just part ways with him. No, I haven't forgotten about how he was lights out before the trade. I also haven't forgotten about how he pitched in 2011 either.
  25. All of those were awesome.
