  1. I believe they brought him up so they could have another bench bat during the interleague series. With the schedule the way it was, they only needed 4 starters for a while. Once Pavano is back, they will probably send him back down for more AAA time.
  2. Agreed. It may be a reference to second favorite major league movie, but the "Black Hammer, White Lightning" was well played.
  3. I was thinking about commenting about his two hits last night. But I've been doing updates on basically a weekly basis. I haven't heard the quote from TR before. That is good info to have. You are right though, he does have other skills and he does seem to be holding his own.
  4. Good stuff. And you signed draftee list is way more complete than BA. Keep up the good work.
  5. Let's hope this week's update signifies a low point for Pedro. Slash line of .248/.292/.357. Fielding % is back up to .969 with 4 errors. Let hope Pedro starts finding the gaps again and starts to tack on those doubles.
  6. Mayslacks has got some pretty good wings. I don't know about the best in town, but they're pretty tasty. I can't remember if their wing special is on Wednesdays or Thursdays though. In St. Paul, I've heard the Blue Door Pub has good wings, but I have never had them, because I think they have the best burgers around, so I never get anything else.
  7. I believe $6.2MM is pretty much the recommended slot bonus for a #2 pick. The recommended bonus for a #1 pick this year was $7MM. I think Houston knew that he would sign for a little less giving them some freedom to pay over slot on some later picks. I think they also realized that it would probably have taken that whole $7MM or more to get Appel (I think that had a lot to due with both agent and signability).
  8. I've been checking up on MLB Trade Rumors as well. I've only seen about 5 or so teams that have signed their #1 pick so far. So the Twins aren't alone on this one. I know how you feel though. I wish they'd all hurry up and sign. At least this year the deadline is pushed up so we don't have to wait as long to find out who signs and who doesn't.
  9. Agreed. I hate errors as a stat. UZR is much better. Dozier is doing fine. Keep him up. My favorite comment about errors: You have to do something right before you get charged with an error.
  10. You are correct. I was at that game at the dome. I have never heard so many people chanting "Let's go Royals" at a home Twins game before or since.
  11. I bet a friend of mine $100 that the Twins would win more than 69 games. The beginning of the season was looking like I would definitely lose that money, but now I'm pretty confident that they're going to win 70-75 games. A lot of that still depends on things like health and any trades we end up making, but I agree with most here that we'll see a team that plays somewhere between the two extremes we have been seeing.
  12. That is how read the statement as well. But your explanation is pretty concise. Now we just get to wait and see how the Twins spread that bonus money around.
  13. From the CBA:Each Club will be assigned an aggregate Signing Bonus Pool prior to each draft. For the purpose of calculating the Signing Bonus Pools, each pick in the first 10 rounds of the draft has been assigned a value. (These values will grow each year with the rate of growth of industry revenue.) A Club’s Signing Bonus Pool equals the sum of the values of that Club’s selections in the first 10 rounds of the draft. Players selected after the 10th round do not count against a Club’s Signing Bonus Pool if they receive bonuses up to $100,000. Any amounts paid in excess of $100,000 will count against the Pool. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/2011_CBA.pdf That link is just to a summary of the CBA. I didn't want to try looking through the full thing as it is close to 300 pages. But here's a link: http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf
  14. It's been a mixed bag for the Florimonster since the last update. The good news is his batting average is up to .270 and added two doubles. The bad news is he has committed 3 errors as well. Slash line: .270/.319/.396 Fielding: .966, 4E and 3.90 RF/G.
  15. After round 10, any bonus over $100k is added to the bonus pool. I can't imagine too many of the HS guys or JR guys will be lured away by that amount, but... you never know. If some of the other guys sign for much below slot level, you could maybe give a big enough bonus to one of the guys that you really like in the later rounds.
  16. I do understand all of these things. I know it takes a while for these skills to develop. I'm not saying that he gives it up yet. What I suggested is that Hicks sits in the batting box during a bullpen session from a right handed pitcher. He may be better at picking up the ball than he thinks he is. The only reason anyone is suggesting he gives up hitting from the left side is that the right side is his natural side, and he is hitting left handed hitting well. You are right that maybe he needs more time to develop the switch hitting skill. But he has been learning this since he started playing baseball at age 12. But he is still young as well. More than likely, he will remain a switch hitter. If he's good at, then keep it up, but there is no harm in letting him stand in the box during a bullpen session to see if he can track the ball from a right handed pitcher three or four times. Maybe that is a skill that would take him even longer to master than hitting from the left side. Maybe he picks it up right away.
  17. Already graduated from Harvard as a sophomore... smarty pants would indeed be the correct name for him then.
  18. You make a convincing argument. Sign with the Twins it is.
  19. Do you think Round #32 pick, Andrew Ferreira is going to sign with Twins or finish out the two years he has remaining at Harvard?
  20. Funny. NW State roster has Goldsmith listed as a catcher, but the draft board has him going as a pitcher. I wonder how he feels about that.
  21. I would rather have them scrap the LH side now instead of finding out that they have to do that in the bigs or even AAA. Give the guy some time to figure out what a curve or slider looks like from the right side. He might actually be surprisingly good at seeing them. He's had enough time to show that he is having a hard time from the left side of the plate. And all I'm advocating is for him to try it in a practice situation. If he can't see a slider to save his life from the right side, then keep him a switch hitter and hope he figures things out.
  22. And Washington drafted a guy name Skye Bolt. The past few rounds have been awesome for names.
  23. Is it immature of me to chuckle when I see that the Pirates have just drafted a guy whose name is Jimmy Rider?
  24. Agreed. Luckily, his signing bonus is probably under $100K at this point, which may have him decide to go back to school for another year.
  25. MLB Trade Rumors is saying that that the Dodgers have signed St. Paul Saint Wes Roemer to a minor league deal. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/06/minor-moves-roemer-kopp.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29 It seems like the Saints must have been full of talent or something. I swear I've seen a lot of posts about members getting minor league contracts.
