  1. True. But he was looking at the money spent per win. He originally wan't going to follow a team, he was just going to write about the economics of baseball (the author is not a baseball guy, his other books tend to deal with wall street). The Twins actually are mentioned in the book as having the second lowest dollar amount per win (obviously not true any more). On an actual draft note, the Twins seem to be going very catcher heavy in rounds 21-24. 4 picks, 3 catchers.
  2. No! That sort of thing doesn't happen in the MLB draft!!!!!!!
  3. Uh oh. The Twins just drafted another Hicks. Dalton Hicks, 1B a junior from Central Florida. Let the confusion begin!
  4. I'd rather have him try hitting from the right side against right handed pitchers. Maybe something clicks and he starts tearing it up. Maybe not, but that would be my first step before trying him out on the mound.
  5. Well, if you're playing college ball, the college is likely free or cheaper if you have a scholarship, depending on the school you go to, and there is potential for you to get drafted higher in a few years.
  6. How many of these picks are likely to sign? I would have to think that some of the HS players drafted in some of the later rounds might not be offered contracts/choose to go to college instead. I would expect the top 8-10 picks will probably sign though.
  7. The metal bat part doesn't bother me at all. Highschools and colleges have started using BBCORE bats now that are metal bats that mimic wood bats. It's not quite perfect, but they are much closer to wood bats than they used to be. I'm excited to see what Buxton can do. I know it will probably take him a few years, but hopefully he signs soon and gets playing. From the scouting reports and articles I've read, he is supposed to be quite the humble kid that works hard and is a team player. I'm not worried that we picked him either. There was a rumor that Appel would turn down a $6MM signing bonus from Houston, which is why they picked Correa. So, if the Twins would have picked him instead of Buxton, he may not have signed anyway.
  8. Quick update: 22 games in AAA and the Florimonster has a slash line of .259/.315/.400. He has 22 hits in 89 AB, including one double, one triple, and 3 HRs. He is also up to 4 stolen bases. He has still been solid with the glove. He has a fielding percentage at .989 and has a range factor/game of 4.09. Pedro has yet to see any time at any other position other than SS this year.
  9. Maybe. He was having a bad spring. And they sent him back before they knew about Baker's TJ surgery. I don't know that Doyle could do better than DeVries or Walters. He wasn't worth trying to work out a trade for him to keep him at AAA and he wasn't good enough to keep him on the 25 man roster, so I don't think that the Twins are too concerned about him.
  10. That's not completely accurate either. If you're going to compare HRs at Target Field vs. every other park, you need to break out every park. Because now you're comparing one hitters park to the average of all other parks. But hitter friendly parks (as well as other pitcher's parks) will skew the data. The only way that the data won't get skewed is if the park factors equaled out, which they don't. So, say a team like the Yankees play in a division where they see a lot more hitter's parks (which I don't know off of the top of my head, but I believe this is true), their HRs are going to be greatly skewed to show they hit way more HRs in other parks besides TF. I know you're trying to average it out per game, but it doesn't really matter. Your data is getting confounded. Sorry for the rant. This is just a statistics issue for me. They are a wonderful thing, but if you look at them incorrectly, they can lead you to the wrong conclusion. I'm probably not conveying my message very clearly either. This might be a good blog post though...
  11. Interesting idea. I like it. This is the perfect time to try something new.
  12. That is pretty much the order that I would like to see too.
  13. Smart money says that if Buxton is available at #2, the Twins are picking him. If Houston picks him it will be Appel/Zimmer/Gausman. From what I've read, all three of those college pitcher are projected to be about the same. They all have different strengths/weaknesses, but you're going to get someone that projects to be a #2 starting pitcher. Which, that isn't bad considering the Twins don't have too many pitchers that even have that high of an upside. Correa would be an interestering pick for sure though. I just don't see it happening.
  14. While it might not have the impact that the MLB all-star game would, the volleyball event is supposed to pretty much take up every hotel room in Minneapolis and a good chunk of hotel rooms in the surrounding suburbs as well. So, I understand why he described it as a major event with a big economic impact. Overall, it's a good thing for the city and surrounding cities. Not a huge deal for us baseball fans though. Also, It is expected that the 2014 All Star Game will in fact be at Target Field. That hasn't been officially announced though. After all, they just announced where the 2013 all-star game will be a few days ago. But this might cheer you up: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/19084895/minnesota-twins-look-like-sure-pick-to-host-2014-all-star-game
  15. They were talking about the volleyball tournament on MPR last night, so the MLB All-Star game wouldn't have been the big announcement I thought of first. But that doesn't mean the All-Star game won't be here in 2014. I wouldn't expect the mayor to be the one to announce that one though. Maybe someone from the Twins, but more likely someone like Bud Selig will make that announcement.
  16. Great Tweet Clarence Swamptown. If anyone thinks this is just showboating, they have a real twisted sense of the world.
  17. Thanks for the write ups! I love hearing about what's going on down on the farm.
  18. Pedro is continuing to do his thing up at AAA. It would be nice to see him walk a little more than he has in AAA, but overall, he is still doing a good job. He is hitting .279/.313/.426. He has added 1 triple since the last update as well. His fielding statistics are good as well. 63 chances, with only 1 error in AAA. His fielding % is currently at .984 and has a range factor/game of 3.88. For a comparison, Brian Dozier's range factor/game was 2.88 AAA (It is up to 5.00 in the majors). Keep up the good work Pedro!
  19. I agree with you here. He is looking like a really good pick up.
  20. Why wait until the game is close if you can run all over the place on him? I say start it off right away if you can.
  21. But the real question is, how common are Knoblauch in chef pants sightings?
  22. Good move. With how he is pitching now, I can't see another team claiming him. There is the random chance that he could figure his stuff out in Rochester, and he'd still be in the system if he's needed. And, open up another spot on the 40 man. I like it.
  23. I'm with you on the public transportation. In fact, this article doesn't even make him sound like he's a scumbag. It just sounds like he was drunk on the subway. Honestly, this story would have been pretty funny to even if it was just some random guy. But that has more to do with the fact that he was incredibly dunk and hitting on girls while wearing chef's pants. The fact that it was supposedly Chuck Knoblauch just happens to be the only has read this story.
  24. Only if you do it on the subway while wearing chef pants... unless you're actually a chef. Then you're good to go.
