  1. Jack, you are forgetting that although the Pohlad family is rich, they are also running the team like a business. They don't just own the team just to say they own a sports team. If you owned the team, would you put all of your own money into every year, or would you do what the Pohlads do to keep the business sustainable? They already stretched the payroll out last year and look what happened there. So they cut the payroll to ONLY $100MM. I'm not saying that I agree with every decision the ownership and FO have made this year, but I am at least willing to understand them before I start ranting. It is spring training. I know the numbers don't mean a whole lot yet. But let's see how they do for a while after the season starts before we start claiming the sky is falling, ok?
  2. If he starts getting 200+ hits again and play until he's 40, then maybe. I wouldn't say that 3,000 hits is a given though. He showed some signs of slowing down last year. I mean, he could only get 184 hits last year...
  3. They guy claimed he had a $1.2 million book deal. Who would pay that much money to a guy for a book about an alleged relationship with Carl Pavano? Who would pay to read about that as well?
  4. Ichiro is a lock for sure. I think the 10+ seasons with 200 or more hits and the fact that he holds the single season record for hits (264) should really help his case.
  5. After reading that article, it sounds like this dude trying to extort Pavano sounds like he might be a few fielders short of an entire team, if you know what I mean.
  6. Dinkleman! In for Span and has switched to RF. Dinkleman has got to be one of my favorite player names to yell during a game.
  7. I agree that it might bite them, but in the case of the Tigers, they're probably only going to go from first to second, or maybe third. Unless Verlander finds himself on the DL for the majority of the season, I just don't see the Tigers losing 99 games. Although, I wouldn't mind seeing the Tigers lose 99 games again. After the Cardinals and the Braves, it kind of turns from educated guesses to complete guesses. Maybe the Yankees as A-Rod and Jeter fail to put up any numbers at all? Maybe the Red Sox due to a new manager and limited starting pitching depth? Like I said, complete guess work.
  8. I don't know if I can limit it to one moment. I was sitting in dead center field. The general atmosphere in the place was really the thing I remember most. There was just so much energy. But Casilla's game winning hit was a pretty amazing way to end it.
  9. I never really had a problem with Punto being a bench guy/utility player for us. I just hated when he was a starter. I also hated his contract. That option was just ridiculous. Ugh... I shutter to think of what would happen if he came back though. Gardenhire would probably have him starting at SS, or take Valencia out to start Punto at 3b. Scary thoughts.
  10. Oh well. Better that then try to have him on the 25 roster and not doing anything good for the team.
  11. It doesn't sound like he will end up on the DL. Not according to him at least. I'm not too worried about his wrist... yet.
  12. Hendricks - Called up because someone (Baker) goes on the DL. That may be as soon as opening day. He may stay up if someone else is not performing. Dozier - Called up after Cassilla has a terrible April and part of May. Carroll plays second, Cassilla sticks around to play utility. Parlamee - Called up after tearing it up int AAA and Doumit goes on the DL. Mourneau moves to full time DH. Benson - Called up after the Twins trade... Revere. Benson to play CF, Span to LF. Willingham in RF. If all this happens, I'm going to start buying lottery tickets.
  13. I can see Doumit being a full time DH with his injury history. Hopefully, not playing in the field as much will really help him stay healthy. I don't know for a fact, but I have heard that even though Doumit can play RF, he's not that good at it. I don't have any numbers to back that up, nor have I actually watched him play RF, so my opinion on him playing RF is all hearsay at this point.
  14. Ouch. He won't stay at 3rd too much longer if that keeps happening. I do hope he ok though.
  15. I see can see it, but I kind of doubt it. Say for example, Jamie Caroll pulls his hamstring in mid April... 15 day DL. What do you do then? Dozier is still not ready for the show and now you are down a SS. Leaving him on the 40 man at least allows you the option of bringing Nishi back up to fill in (even though, he probably also still isn't ready). But at least he has experience. Caroll comes back in 15 days and now you'd have 26 players. If you have to option Nishi back to AAA, who cares? But if that's Dozier, you've just started his ML clock for two weeks of play that probably been better spent in AAA. I think he'll stay on the 40 man until they think Dozier is ready to take over SS full time. Side note- Zumaya will be put on the 60 day DL at the end of ST, or just released. So we can count on an open spot there for sure.
  16. Towels as backup catcher I could see. Doumit as a full time RF is a bad idea. If he and Willingham were in the outfield together, things would get ugly in a hurry. Willingham just won't be able to cover all of LF, at least not in Target Field. Parmalee is too young to be considered a full time DH anyway. I'm excited about Parmalee as well. It looks like your lineup is trying to get Doumit, Willingham, Parmalee, Morneau and Mauer all in the lineup at the same time. That would be exciting yes, but probably not practical. If anything, you'd have Parmalee play RF (which he has done in the minors), Willingham in LF, Doumit DH. That would still leave some big questions in the outfield for defense.
  17. It does look pretty ugly. It is interesting to see that Denard Span's isolated power stat is higher than Delmon Young's for last year. That might be a little different if you through his Detroit stats in there, but I'm not sure it would change that much. Also a fun fact: Tsuyoshi Nishioka (WAR 2011): -1.7 Adam Dunn (WAR 2011): -2.9
  18. That is scary. I would kind of like to see a breakdown for the team. Was the low overall WAR from a lack of players with a decent WAR (a lot of players with a WAR of 0.1 or so), or were there some players with very negative WARs that brought down the average? How does that compare to other teams around the league? I admit, I could do this research myself, but I don't know if I have the time. Sounds like it would be a fun article to read about though.
  19. This was the toughest position ranking for me so far. Had to go with Gordon. I don't know if he can repeat 2011 or not. So far, I'd say this is the position with the most potentially good players. I think we're just going to have to wait this one out and see.
  20. They even voted for Kotchman over Konerko? Well, at least someone has a sense of humor? Or they meant to click on Fielder? I don't get it either, unless they are in fact a Troll.
  21. Meh. I put $20 down on the Twins to win it all in 2010 and they had 10:1 odds. That was before the season started. I don't think Vegas gave 50:1 odds for any team. Then again, I didn't look at the odds for any other team. I say bet the college fund on the over under. It's the gambling version of drafting a college "pitch to contact" pitcher. Nothing flashy, but it will probably work for a while.
  22. You're right. It should not be an either or situation. Scouting has clearly predicted quality players, and so has the Sabermetrics. Realistically, they should show you the same things. I'm a science type guy, so I like seeing evidence behind decisions. That's easily done through stats. But stats aren't always going to show you things that might be important, like a pitcher with mechanics that will lead to injury or a batter with a relatively low bat speed. A team should really strive to be the best at both.
  23. I had to go with Baker. Hopefully he and Liriano get ridiculous this year and really tear up batters. Marquis and Pavano's seasons will really just depend on the infield and if they continue to create ground balls. They both have high GB rates (50.4% and 46.8% career rates respectively), so that should help create a lot of out if the infield is any good at all. Blackburn really kind of falls into the same category as Marquis and Pavano really. If he creates ground balls at the same rate as last year (53.5%) and the infield is actually able to help him out this year, he might have a really good year.
  24. Dare I say this, but how about a team in Madison, WI? It'd be close enough to the Twin Cities, and is big enough to support a team. They already have a team in the Northwoods league, so something would have to be worked out there as well. Just a random thought.
