  1. No, it has nothing to do with luck. It's all about the process. Building and maintaining success in sports and in business require sound processes. The process is about identifying discounted assets that have the potential to pay off. Buy low, sell high. It's the baseball version of what made Warren Buffet one of the richest men on the planet. And sure, sometimes these bets don't work out, and that's rotten luck, but not an indictment of the process. It is indeed what the Twins did with Hughes. Not luck, they identified a discounted asset with the potential to flourish with a change or changes. However, in the Twins case there is no process. It's more of a "throw s**t at the wall and see what sticks" approach.
  2. There are just so many false narratives out there, Dave. "Whoa is us, Small Market Twinstm. We could never compete with the big dogs!" It's never going to go away. It's just a crutch for the pro-TR crowd and those afraid of change to keep the status quo.
  3. No he wouldn't. He would have signed Samardjiza to expensive long-term contract through his 30's, because veterans >>>>>>>>> young, cheap, rookies in TR's mind. No Russell, plus all the risk of Samardjiza's arm falling off and being stuck with a fat contract. There was no "luck" with Arrieta. He's always had the stuff to get K's and likely just needed a change of scenery. The Cubs saw something they could fix, and acquire a talented arm at a discounted price and made the deal. Arrieta has now been pitching at an elite level for two full seasons now. There is no luck there. That is how well run-ball clubs operate.
  4. Maybe Perkins is just on the wrong side of 30 and finally showing his age? That's the problem with being too tied to individual pitchers in the bullpen- they break often and need replacement. Locking them up to long-term contracts are never wise- especially at an advanced age. If it were up to me, I would have traded him in 2013 or 2014.

    10-3

    Nope. It ended this weekend.
  6. Santana's entire career he's been incredibly inconsistent. Look at his ERA and xFIP numbers from year to year. He's never been anything more than a good number 3 when one. I never understood what people expected when we signed him.
  7. No. Please, no more trades for bullpen arms.
  8. I was 1 and 1/2 in '91 so I've never understood this Twins/Braves thing. Must be nice to have been old enough to remember one of your favorite sports teams winning a championship.
  9. I can't wait to see the damage Anderson is going to do to the Tiger staff.
  10. Bingo. Seems sports fans forget that most Floridians are transplants from somewhere else. Thus, they are generally beholden to the sports teams where they grew up. It's not just the baseball teams, but it seems like all the pro teams down there struggle to draw.
  11. I think deja vous is the plural.
  12. I'm still not sold on Vargas. He's still going to strike out a lot and has never managed to translate his raw power into game power. Not to mention the uphill battle a power hitting switch hitter has to nail down the mechanics on two swings. I just don't think he'll hit enough to justify being a full time DH.
  13. Why? Escobar is younger, cheaper and likely a better SS going forward.
  14. Why? He's not a stop gap. He's proven over the past two seasons he's an above average major league shortstop. Just let him ****ing play. Trade for other areas of need.
  15. For clarification that BABIP of .336 was last years' not this years.
  16. Just like I did over on the Escobar thread, I'm going out on limb here: Jose is our future ace. While I support being cautious with his innings this year, we need to start him in the rotation out of spring training next year. We've got our ace. Escobar is our SS. Kepler will be our lefty bat in the line-up. Now we need to find a solid young catcher this offseason and assemble a legit bullpen. Now I'm not the most optimistic person in the world, but I am confidently optimistic about next year... as long as Terry Ryan doesn't F*** it up.
  17. So in 65 PA's in August Escobar has a triple slash of .292/.361/.554 He's cut his K rate to 16.7% and increased his walk rate to 9.7% so far this month. Meanwhile his BABIP for the month is only up to .320, which is lower than his BABIP of .336 and only a little higher than his career BABIP of .309. It seems to me that with regular playing time Eduardo has really made some legit improvements. We should be excited. Edit: And he is only 26. I am confidently going to say that we have found our starting SS. Now all we need is a catcher and a legit bullpen for next year.
  18. Not me. It was obvious to everyone but the Twins that Santana was a BABIP flash in the pan and Vargas never had much of track record in the minors. Not to mention I tend to be dubious about switch hitting prospects.
  19. Homeruns aren't included in BABIP. A home run is not a ball in play.
  20. The military does a good enough job selling war on it's own to the general public. It doesn't need any help... oh wait, you mean WAR.
  21. I thought the old people are too busy yelling at kids to get off their lawns, catching the early bird special at Old Country Buffet or driving dangerously slow in the left lane to care.
  22. Little of column A, little of column B. Molitor didn't put him on the roster, that was Ryan. However, Molitor could have benched him.
  23. At least when Punto was used properly he was valuable: Plus defender at 3 positions (and plus-plus at 3rd), had speed and was a good base stealer, and drew enough walks to maintain a solid OBP for someone with 0 power and marginal ability to hit for average. Santana is a complete liability.
