  1. It's a Ryan Standard Operating Procedure. The best example off the top of my head was picking up Dusty Hughes because he confounded Mauer and Morneau. Hughes had like an ERA over 5.
  2. You must have high standards for 4th outfielders then.
  3. He's a fine 4th OF but no way should he be the starting CF'er.
  4. But this presents another problem... I don't think Buxton is quite ready for a full time gig in CF out of spring training. Do we sign somebody like Denard Span to a 1 yr deal to keep the spot warm?
  5. Definitely a big trade. We got a young catcher that we really need. Anybody know how he rates at pitch framing? Seems like he is at least average offensively for a catcher.
  6. I could see Span on a one year deal to keep CF warm for Buxton, I don't think he is ready for a full time role in the majors yet. But I hope the Twins plan at catcher isn't to sign AJ. I want them to look to trade Plouffe for a long term solution at catcher.
  7. I would prefer they deal Plouffe for a quality catcher this offseason. If they need to throw in a prospect like Polanco to get it done, so be it. But I will not be happy if Plouffe is traded for bullpen parts or another #3 starter.
  8. The thing people scouting pitchers and building pitching staffs should be asking is not whether or not the pitcher has velocity, but whether the pitcher can miss bats.
  9. I think the difference between '14 Hughes and '14-'15 Arrieta is talent. Arrieta simply has better stuff. Not luck, but let's agree to disagree.
  10. 2014 looks a lot like an outlier. Not saying he can't come back, but teams aren't exactly going to be lining up to trade for a pitcher with a 116 FIP- last year on a long term contract.
  11. Strawman argument. The concussion is irrelevant because it happened this past spring training. The Twins signed Suzuki before the '14 season to be their starter. He played out of his mind for half a season. The Twins, clearly in rebuild mode never attempted to sell high and trade him at the deadline and then roll with their bat-ready catcher that needed polish defensively. Instead they resigned their no-hit, poor glove (by any sort of modern defensive evaluation for catchers) and kept Pinto in the minors. Low and behold! Their no-hit catcher turns back into a pumpkin. Maybe if they gave Pinto a half a season of being the starting catcher at the major league level they would be a little closer to having this problem solved. Finally, if had been the starter going into the season he may not have been behind the plate in that ST game when he got hit in the head by the Adam Jones back-swing.
  12. I'm sure they could. If they trade him for some gently used batting practice balls.
  13. It's not like he's any worse than Suzuki. Suzuki is routinely rated as one of the worst pitch framers in the game. And he can't throw out runners.
  14. Great! Not my point though.
  15. Yup. Luck, that he's been healthy, sure. But there was no luck to the Cubs identifying that Arrieta having that talent in him and there was no luck on Arrieta's part to achieve that level of success, just lots of hard work. I've always thought Arrieta had a ton of talent. I remember back in 2012 and 13 wishing that we would trade for him.
  16. And TR's process never inspired a whole bunch of teams to change their processes and hire like minded people. Beane did that.
  17. LOL you should totally throw the flag for excessive use of strawman on him. http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/995/415/b30.jpg
  18. +1,000
  19. Go ahead, challenge Theo Epstein's record. I dare you. And no, Epstein is not the only GM with sound processes- that's a straw man. Look at Tampa Bay, look at the Cardinals, The Pirates, the Astros, look at what Beane did with the Athletics! A book was written about their process.
  20. An OPS over .850 in AA and AAA seems to disagree with you.
  21. You are clearly not aware of who Theo Epstein is.
  22. Hughes is not a high strikeout pitcher. Have you ever look at the K rate leaders in the past five years at Fangraphs?
  23. False, Pinto was never given a shot. The Twins have never viewed Pinto as a legit starting option. Suzuki, despite what we think was always option 1 for the Twins to be the starting catcher. That is difference number two. Good organizations that are rebuilding let their young kids play to see if they can develop into: part of the future, a piece that can be sold for a part of the future, or a liability that needs to be addressed via trade or free agency.
  24. I wish I could like this post more than once. This encapsulates the main difference between good front offices and the not so good, including the Twins. Buy low, sell high. Good teams do that and they do that consistently. In this specific case the Twins bought at market value, maybe even a slight discount, but when their asset appreciated they held instead of selling. Now they can't sell because they are 20 feet under water.
