  1. He's still young, and learning. He only has 25 major league starts under his belt. He improved alot from last fall to this past spring. Give him some time to figure it out. But the only way he can do that is in the starting rotation.
  2. If I'm Molitor I'm putting Hughes in the bullpen and Milone is my long-man and demanding to TR to dump Nolasco for whatever he can. Because my job, as the team's manager, is to put the players in the best position to win games. And that means Santana, May, Duffey, Gibson, and Berrios are my starting 5.
  3. False. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2015&month=0&season1=2015&ind=0&team=8&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=17,a
  4. But sadly, we are all fans of one of the worst run teams in the American League.
  5. Everybody is giving Hughes a pass because of 2014. But his 2014 looks an awful lot like a statistical outlier. he just doesn't have that track record. 2015 is closer to his career average. He just doesn't have enough pitches to be anything more than a back-end starter, but his fastball/curveball combo would play up in the pen. May should be in the rotation. Putting him in the bullpen is a fireable offense to me.
  6. May needs to be in the rotation.
  7. But why do they like Dean so much? Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of confidence in the Twins ability to properly evaluate their own players.
  8. Glad somebody else pointed this out too.
  9. Holy Hyperbole Batman! Well, maybe a starter that doesn't strike anybody out as a minor leaguer nor get same side hitters out really well is why I'm doubtful he'll be successful. Let's run a quick comparison between Perkins and Dean. Both are lefties, college draftees that started in the minors and Perkins has been successfully converted to a reliever. Perkins: A+ K/9- 10.1 AA K/9- 9.1 AAA K/9- 7.0 Dean: A+ K/9- 5.0 AA K/9- 4.8 AAA K/9- 4.9 What indication do YOU have that Dean would be a successful reliever? You're using 100% conjecture, at least I have hard numbers to back up my point.
  10. Not trading Perkins was a HUGE missed opportunity (or mistake) to maximize talent for a future playoff run. He was literally the lowest of low hanging fruit when it came to tradeable assets. The value he provided to a losing team was rather meaningless and given his age, he didn't fit into the Twins' timeline- he's in his decline phase now- when the team is finally opening it's window for contention. Having a large and deep pipeline of young talent is the #1 factor in determining both the height and duration of contention for low-mid level payroll teams like the Twins.
  11. I agree that in a vacuum this is not going to matter one bit, neither is probably going to get more than a cup of coffee. Why it does matter is because it has become a recurring theme every year when roster decisions are made and we are left scratching our heads wondering why we are protecting player X, when player Y is lost through waivers or Rule 5. Player X tends to be some non-prospect approaching 30, whose upside is AAA depth and player Y is a mid-to-low level prospect with some upside left. Jones gets K's and throws hard, but has control problems. Dean is older and does nothing well.
  12. I'd say Dean's upside is "cup-of-coffee," below replacement level LOOGY.
  13. Then why protect him? A lot would have to go wrong before Dean sees any meaningful time in the majors.
  14. I don't really follow teams outside the AL Central in the offseason so I have no idea, but I'd assume they very well may have a legit reason for leaving them unprotected. Maybe free agent acquisitions or trades? There was ZERO chance Dean, Landa, Randy Rosario, and a very slim chance Melotakis (didn't he just have TJ surgery?) would have been taken. Jones seemed to be an obvious add to me.
  15. Yet another reason for the "Why does it matter what hand a starting pitcher throws with?" argument.
  16. No. No reason makes sense. Once again this organization proves they have no idea how to manage a 40 man roster. There were several players that should never have been protected.
  17. Definitely surprised by how inexpensive his contract is. Not much downside to this deal. I think the Twins got a steal.
  18. Who's Melvin Upton?
  19. The only comparison to be made: I hope to God the scouts that thought it was a good idea to go after Nishioka weren't the same ones that have been scouting Park. In fact, I hope they are no longer with the team.
  20. I think we are looking at two different pages. All I see are Frame Chances/Predicted Strikes/Actual Strikes/Extra Strikes/Framing Runs Added By Count... etc But I agree, Suzuki was awful last year.
  21. I don't see a pergame column. And yes, Suzuki saw 2.49 times (not 3 times) as many pitches. But if Murphy caught 2.49 times as many pitches, then he would jump to 31st in extra strikes, making the difference between the two greater.
  22. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1819124 Actually Murphy was 38th, not 39th (out of 109) last year in extra strikes and Suzuki was 90th. I don't know where you're getting your data.
  23. League average catcher is still a huge improvement over a below replacement level Suzuki.
  24. Small sample size but Murphy was 35th in 2014 and 39th in 2015 (out of 100+ catchers to record an inning) and Suzuki was 90th in 2015. He's a HUGE upgrade in that department. Suzuki was an absolute black hole last year with all things considered.
  25. Yeah, I'm definitely a TR hater but even I can't call this a horrible trade.
