  1. Kepler has just increased his level of experience.
  2. Take our third baseman. Please.
  3. Reminds me of something Souhan once wrote about Matthew LeCroy that probably applies to Coomer. Souhan said LeCroy was a baseball player trapped in the body of a softball player.
  4. Interesting sidebar. Love quirky tidbits like that.
  5. Al Shaver always used to say Tronno.
  6. So, I was thinking about blue jays (the bird). It's a good-looking bird but it has an obnoxious call and it's an obnoxious bird. Pushes other birds around like it owns nature and a messy eater. Does that carry over to the team that is its namesake and the fans thereof? An opinion on this matter from any qualified observer (for example a resident of a large city in southern Manitoba) would be interesting to read.
  7. My son told me just now that Vin Scully's first year as a broadcaster, 1950, was Connie Mack's last year as manager. That one year of overlap means that two men have had a presence in Major League Baseball in every year of the modern era. Connie Mack's first game as a player was in 1886 but he had 5 years out of baseball before 1901.
  8. Give in to the dark side of the force, you knob!
  9. That was very very cool. Going back a generation earlier, legend has it that the song "Runaway" by Del Shannon had a similar origin. The band stumbled across a chord sequence and melody while on stage and eventually worked it up into a hit song.
  10. I don't know if I can keep the TV on.
  11. He can't handle the Plouffe.
  12. Just now got caught up on the thread. I am astounded that nobody mentioned the first Canada's band. Here's the title track from my favourite of their albums.
  13. Weren't we in this game a couple minutes ago?
  14. When Lofton left the University of Arizona he held the school record for career steals. In basketball.
  15. Same reason that pitchers cover their mouths with their gloves when talking signs and strategy with their catchers. Cellular or cordless phone calls can be monitored, which means eavesdropping could occur. Old fashioned closed-circuit phone systems are much more secure.
  16. Just checked in and saw that I was mentioned. I'll tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. First of all, I've never been a good golfer. I'd usually hit 2 or 3 good shots in an 18-hole round. I think I've played once in the last 15 years. So. City Park-Rec tournament at the local 9-hole course, probably 1971, which made me 15 years old. Par 3, 170 yards or so, slightly uphill. I believe I used a 3-iron because I didn't know any better. I swung hard, hard enough that I lifted my head a little and bladed the shot. I'm surprised I didn't cut the ball. So it's basically a line drive that bounced once or twice and then bounced again right where the hole happened to be. The ball probably would have wound up 30 yards past the hole otherwise. I challenge anyone to describe a luckier, less-deserved ace.
  17. I did play this game a few times many years ago. Thought it was a fairly realistic game simulation because even though it started with basic stats there were several levels of randomization which made the outcome unpredictable.
  18. My condolences as well. Hope everyone is bearing up as well as possible.
  19. I think this idea is worth exploring. I think a goal for his workload would be in the neighborhood of 100 pitches plus warmups.
  20. One of the biggest underachievers of the last 10 years, at least in terms of physical talent. I guess he's an example of the saying I've heard that the most important part of your body for playing baseball is your brain.
  21. So this might be a bad time to bring up the Hrbek/Gant play again?
  22. It's not just strikeouts. How many times was the count 1-2 when it should have been 3-0? The answer is at least in triple digits.
