  1. Goes to show that the most important part of a baseball player's body isn't his hands, or his legs, or his arms. It's his brain.
  2. Every home game.
  3. To me the Hall of Fame, whether Twins or MLB, isn't about peak value. It's about total value. And in the case of the Twins that means total value as a Twin. For example, we may not have been World Champions in '87 without Don Baylor. But Twins HOF? Of course not.
  4. I don't know enough about any players to talk about specific deals, but to me this seems like a rare opportunity for the Twins. A player at his peak with a favorable contract who is not going to be part of the Twins' long-term plan with several teams appearing to express interest. This could be a career-defining trade for Falvey and Levine and I'm sure they want to get this one right.
  5. About a year ago I posted a barely-readable report on how a less-unbalanced schedule would have made essentially no difference in who made the playoffs in 2015. I'm too lazy to find the link to it but it's in the archives somewhere.
  6. Reminds me of the Steven Wright joke: "If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would it be?" "Someone living."
  7. Just FYI: the AL went 165-135 vs. the NL in 2016. The AL has finished better than the NL for 13 straight years.
  8. Barring a canceled game it would not be possible for the season record to be tied going into the last series, but I get the point. Do you think a team would purposely lose to spite another team from its division? When there are 19 games against each team the following season in which revenge could be exacted?
  9. This is exactly why I think home field should be given to the league, not the team.
  10. This is a link to the AP piece published on the Strib web site. http://www.startribune.com/apnewsbreak-all-star-game-no-longer-determines-series-start/403941126/ IM not-so-HO they got it half right. Dumping the current format was right, but I think home field advantage should go to the league with the better record in interleague play.
  11. As I said in my first post I understand the concept and significance of WAR. The WARs that are out there can give us a general idea of who the best players are but we can usually get that from objective statistics. I just think that it's not possible to determine accurately or precisely how much of an effect individual players have on the outcome of games.
  12. I've always had a bit of trouble accepting WAR. I understand the concept and significance of trying to rate a player in terms of how he impacts the outcome of games but the problem is that it is not an objective statistic. Formulas vary based on the opinions of those who determine them. IMHO baseball is too complicated to definitively measure the value of the contribution of any individual player.
  13. I disagree. A 29 year old catcher with a serious knee injury? Pass.
  14. There's not much above Castro in free agency, and trading for a top-flight catcher at this stage of rebuilding would hurt more than help. I think they aimed about right.
  15. I generally agree but I think 4 will precede 3.
  16. I think (or, probably more accurately, hope) that the 2017 season will see this team's future core emerge. It's not time to spend big money in the FA market. Yet.
  17. Technically PR is not international.
  18. MLB did that already, in 1969. But really, I know what you mean and I suppose it is a possibility but there are big roadblocks. Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic would probably have enough interest in a major league franchise but not enough money or stability. Japan would probably have enough interest and money, but road trips to the west coast are bad enough. A 162-game MLB schedule involving a Japanese team would, I think, be either unfair, unworkable or both. Europe would not be any better. My guess is that Mexico City is about the only place outside the US and Canada that would have any chance.
  19. I'll always remember how Hawkins truly emerged as a big-time reliever in 2002. I think he was Rick Anderson's biggest success as a pitching coach.
  20. And maybe the site administrator should create a separate forum for threads about threads.
  21. I side with Chief because I'm pretty sure Kate Upton is the one who decided this relationship would exist. That said, Justin Verlander should be beyond grateful.
  22. Everyone knew the Twins weren't going to sign him. No team would make a trade for someone who was going to be a free agent.
