  1. No on the automatic IBB proposal. You have to throw the pitches.
  2. About a year and a half ago I posted a nearly-unreadable analysis of the unbalanced schedule. Turns out that balancing the schedule would make very little difference in the standings. We also recently had a discussion about the disadvantages of cross-time-zone travel, which would be worse in a balanced schedule. Two years ago I was in favor of balancing it out. Now I'm against it.
  3. There is absolutely no point in this. It would increase the likelihood of scoring in extra innings but it would increase it by the same amount for both teams so it would not shorten games. Just play real baseball.
  4. I don't want to give this a like because I don't like it, but I think this is highly likely.
  5. In theory, theory and reality are the same. In reality, theory and reality are not the same.
  6. One thing that hasn't been mentioned on this thread is that Kepler is also an option at 1B. One more reason that it made sense for Park to be the one to go at this juncture.
  7. My beverage of choice would be a keg of Surly Overrated. Actually, I'm not going to bet because I hope it turns out you are right even though I know it will turn out you are wrong.
  8. I just reviewed the 40-man to see if there was a non-pitcher I would have DFA'd instead of Park. And there was nobody. As almost everyone else here seems to think, the next on my list would be Grossman and Dantana. I think Falvine will DFA them before opening day too, it's just that Park's name came up first. I'm sure that there will be pitchers cut loose in the next couple months as well, but that's a separate matter.
  9. Reminds me of one of the best things Jim Souhan ever wrote. He said Matthew LeCroy was a baseball player trapped in the body of a softball player.
  10. And give him a break from playing in the field from time to time. Large people fatigue more easily, leading to an increased likelihood of injury and such.
  11. Because having switch hitters in the lineup can screw up the opposition's bullpen rotation.
  12. I generally agree, but when I think about it the only thing I really like about Park is the dinger he hit over the batter's eye last year. That's only one swing out of a whole season.
  13. Agree with the first sentence. Disagree with the second sentence. Agree with the third sentence.
  14. Except Punto had more value.
  15. As of now this post has 39 likes. That must be some sort of record.
  16. This reminds me of something I read once. I can't remember who wrote it so I can't make a citation. The point the writer made was that there are three types of players who wind up as major league catchers. The two more common types are hitters who can catch and catchers who can't hit. The third type, the rarity, is catchers who can hit.
  17. And also because they are not defensive liabilities at any particular position.
  18. Since he was still claimed, that makes him 1200th. Don't shortchange the guy.
  19. There would be much less travel across time zones overall. There would more in the West division than the East, obviously, since all East teams except Milwaukee would be in the Eastern Time Zone. The only 3-zone trips would be during the small amount of interleague play.
  20. The assumption I would make is for it to be similar to the current arrangement. Each division in the east would play one division in the west and vice versa, probably 20 games. The matchups would rotate on a 3-year cycle.
  21. Just to waste a bit more time, brain energy and space: East 1: Bos NYY NYM Phi Pit East 2: Bal Was Atl TB Mia East 3: Tor Cle Cin Det Mil West 1: CWS ChC Min Col Sea West 2: StL KC Hou Tex Ari West 3: SF Oak LAD LAA SD Keep in mind this is all waaaay hypothetical. But the only real geographic disconnect would be Milwaukee in the East, which would be necessary to keep the two Chicago teams in the same division. And West 1 would be a bit spread out, but it's a consequence of the other two West divisions being more logical. My unscientific prediction is that the rivalries in this alignment would evolve to be stronger than the ones in the current alignment. And we'd still get to hate the Whities 19 times a year.
  22. Yep. Almost all rivalries could be maintained and new ones could emerge. Just look at the annual interleague rivalry series and make those interdivisional.
  23. I was just going to say that there's only 3 hours of difference between California and New Zealand at this time of year. (It's actually 21 hours but let's not quibble.)
  24. This is one of the reasons that an unbalanced schedule is not as unfair as it might seem. If all teams were in the same time zone more interdivisional play a balanced schedule would probably be more fair. But since a balanced schedule would require a lot more E-W travel the east coast and especially the west coast teams would be even more disadvantaged. Plus more potential for travel disruption due to weather, etc. An interesting (to me, at least) thought: what about league realignment once the DH becomes an MLB-wide rule? The 15 easternmost teams would be in one league and the 15 westernmost teams in the other. I can already picture steam coming out of the ears of the traditionalists, but it would improve the travel situation for almost everyone and it might make for an overall improvement in the level of play.
