  1. Dickroy talking about Vargas needing to cut that throw. I think it's Suzuki's call for the cut.
  2. Suzuki's only shot was to try to sweep tag the runner. Probably couldn't have gotten him anyway.
  3. Seems Nolasco's getting squeezed a bit here.
  4. Oh, I forgot. No need to troll Aggies because I think he said he's going to be at the game in person tonight.
  5. There's good reason to tank in the NBA, less in hockey and football and essentially no reason at all to do so in baseball. You can win it all in the NBA with 3 really good players, and the draft is much more of a sure thing providing immediate benefit compared with other sports. That's why the NBA has a draft lottery and the other sports don't. Tanking in baseball for the purpose of the draft and so forth is pretty much pointless.
  6. Because it would be unfair to enable the opposing manager to use a pinch hitter knowing a new pitcher couldn't be brought in.
  7. Yep. And regarding the pitch clock, "Time, ump, I've got some dust in my eye."
  8. 3 balls, 2 strikes? No. Limit catcher trips to the mound? No. Limit pitching changes? No. (No limiting pinch hitters either.) Require a pitcher to face more than one batter? No. (A pitcher is already required to face one batter.) Limit defensive shifts? No. Eliminate relief pitcher's 8 warm-ups? No. Pitch clock? Maybe, but only with bases empty. Speed up replay challenges? Yes. Reduce time between innings? Get rid of GBA in the mid-7th? Yes. Enlarge the strike zone and lower the pitcher's mound? Yes.
  9. Disagree. Even though mounds are pretty uniform at the start of a game the contour changes little by little during the course of a game, especially if there's been any rain. A pitcher should be entitled to get a feel for the mound.
  10. I agree and disagree. Pitchers throwing more strikes moves the game along and that's a good thing. But there is an obvious rule that will change that, namely enlarging the strike zone. And that's the only rule change that I would find acceptable. The problem with making that change is that it would increase the rate of strikeouts, which I think we don't want. So in conjunction with that I'd also advocate lowering the pitcher's mound. These two changes made together would make it easier for pitchers to throw strikes but also make it easier for batters to hit pitches. More base hits, fewer walks, comparable number of K's, faster-paced game, more action. To me it's a win all the way around.
  11. Winnah! Nice clean save for Kintzler.
  12. Tuned in when Dozier got his walk. The last 5 outs worth of baseball has been some really good stuff.
  13. The coolest thing would be to end this game on a 5-4-3 triple play. We've got the batter and the infield alignment, we just need a sharp grounder to third.
  14. Well, there's a chance that your soulmate is doing the same thing right now.
  15. Back in the '60's Hamms was considered a decent beer. Now according to my son who graduated college a year ago it's about $14 a 30-pack. Which made it the beer of choice of his circle of compadres.
  16. Dick: "Tommy Milone with 8 innings of shutout ball allowing just one run." He can be forgiven for being confused. The unexpected has a way of flummoxing people.
  17. I'd love to say yes, but I know better than to jinx this game.
  18. Knowing that he'll never get another baseball job if he screws things up during the next three months.
  19. It will be quite a while before I can read what everyone has said, but I'll put this in here now. There are two linked actions here: One, firing Ryan and, two, hiring the next GM. Firing Ryan is by far the less important of the two.
  20. Tony the Tiger was voiced by the incomparable Thurl Ravenscroft. Mr. Ravenscroft was also well known to those of us of ChiTown's vintage (I said us, don't give me grief) because he sang the Grinch song.
  21. This isn't quite right either. It's a suspended game only if the visiting team has taken the lead in the top half of the inning that was underway when the game was called. So if the visiting team is leading after 5 and the game is called at some point during the 6th inning the visiting team wins.
  22. Looked like the solar plexus. Knocked the wind out of him but he'll be good to go if the next inning takes place tonight.
