  1. This must mean you think he'll waive his no-trade clause.
  2. I concur with the Mauer/Park/Vargas platoon for 1B and DH. You've got one LH, one RH, and one SH. Sit the LH against the toughest LHP's and sit the RH against the toughest RHP's. Mix and match to get approximately 108 starts for each player. That also leaves one of the three to bring in late in close games and extra inning games. Any manager worth his salt should be able to make that work.
  3. I'm sure almost everyone expects Mauer to retire after his contract expires after the 2018 season. But even though it is a bit of a drag on the Twins for the next two seasons it could be worse. The Angels owe Albert Pujols $24M for the coming season. And for next season. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that.
  4. We had two very solid starters at the top of the rotation. Plus we lucked into being in a soft division; we had the fifth best record in the AL. Plus we only had to win 8 postseason games to become WS winners. That team was one of the flukiest World Champions in history.
  5. I agree with your point but I'll nitpick to say that I think 1B is more important defensively than LF because of the higher number of times the ball is handled at 1B. Kind of hard to compare because the skill sets required are different. Can you picture Vargas playing LF? Me neither. Can you picture Delmon Young playing 1B? Me neither.
  6. I know this post was regarding fielding in Oakland, but it reminded me that this Plouffe video may be even more ridiculous.
  7. I've only been to Oakland once, in 1986. The best Metrodome seats were far better than the best Oakland seats, which is damning by faint praise. I'll concede sunshine vs the roof and all that, but in terms of viewing the game itself I'd say Oakland was worse.
  8. No, I mean I have x-ray contact lenses. What did you think I meant?
  9. Not if I steal it first. Of course I don't know where it is but I have contacts...
  10. That was fun. I remember watching that game on TV against Cleveland in 2001. The RF was Juan Gonzalez. He was over-muscled for some reason (in 2001? What could be the reason for that?) and as a result he had little flexibility to run or throw. Plus he didn't have much talent for fielding. I read the game story on the Plain Dealer web site the next day. The writer's opening was that the game was small ball vs big ball and small won in a big way.
  11. I think the ground-out is actually more impressive. It was a decent speed grounder and Lindor was not particularly deep. The HR time probably could have been a few hundredths faster but it looks like he eased up a tad during the last 50 feet or so when he saw he had it made.
  12. Man, it's past my bedtime. G'night, all.
  13. If you were at that game you also saw the most awesome, perfect defensive play in the bottom of the 13th that I'll never forget. Giambi on first, Posada hits a rope over Hunter's head in center, Hunter gets to the ball at the wall, fires a strike to Hocking who fires a strike to AJ to nail Giambi.
  14. http://www.startribune.com/wipeout-watch-white-bear-mascot-continue-to-fall-in-gophers-hockey-commercial-outtakes/409702955/ Not baseball but it brought tears to my eyes.
  15. That's redundant.
  16. Oh, I don't know about that. There's a difference between unintelligent and silly.
  17. He could become the next Mark DeRosa, or Brian Duensing.
  18. I agree in thinking that these grades are pretty accurate. I think it's proper for grades to be based strictly on performance. It's too subjective to try to account for extenuating circumstances such as Hughes's health and Berrios' inexperience.
  19. I'm glad this question was asked and answered. I have family members connected with both colleges so for me there's no wrong answer. However, having family members connected with both colleges also means there's no right answer.
  20. Let me add my condolences to you, stringer. As someone of similar age I can say this was way too early to lose your wife and I hope all goes as well as possible for you as the future unfolds.
  21. Born in the '50's in Winona. Minnesota resident my whole life except for a 4-year exile in Ohio for college. Currently living in the Twin Cities metro, here since 1985. Fan since I suppose around 1962. In my case being a Twins fan is a genetic condition, inherited from both sides of the family. Lots of fun memories, too many to allow me to list them all. I was at Game 2 of the 1965 WS and all 4 home games in 1987 and in 1991. 1991 is more special because my wife and I were married in September of that year. Our first date was a Twins game, BTW. I became an active member here in April or May of 2015 after a couple years of gentle prodding by a certain moderator whom I've known since, well, a while back. I'm more of a lurker during the off season but I will be checking in almost every day once things start up in FL in February. I almost always enjoy the discussions here, and it's good to be somewhere where everyone shares an enjoyment of Twins baseball.
  22. I'll post my stuff later, but I just wanted to respond to a previous poster (you know who you are): Atheism, Communism, Free Love
  23. I'm still hoping Vargas can perform well enough to take over at DH. Having a SH there with power from both sides is a very nice weapon to have. Batting Sano 3rd and Vargas 4th could be like the Tigers have had with Cabrera and Martinez.
  24. In the second half of 1990 and the first half of 1991 he had that heavy sinking fastball that nobody could do anything with. I don't remember what he did to his arm in midseason 1991 but he still somehow eked out 20 wins and made it through the postseason. Unfortunately that dominant pitch never came back.
