  1. That was actually an awesome bunt.
  2. Just tuned in (a little late to the party). Watching Hawkins... I remember going to spring training in 1994 and seeing two young pitchers throwing on adjacent mounds-- Hawkins and Guardado. And they're both in the stadium tonight.
  3. Not too difficult. You just say, "Excuse me, Mayor Ford, would you be so kind to try to keep it down just a touch?"
  4. WAR doesn't measure talent level. It measures how well you have been playing.
  5. I still say Brock should have changed the title so people would have understood the spirit in which it was intended and continued in that vein. Oh well, I guess it's a mute point now.
  6. That's what I've been told by one of the mods. Only they have the power after the time expires.
  7. Twins record in months with names longer than 3 letters: 34-44. Based on this, projected record in months with names longer than 3 letters: 59-76. Based on this, projected 2015 record: 79-83. This very similar to the record predicted by many of us before the start of the season. Still wish I could have bet the over in Vegas in March.
  8. It's not just whom you play, it's also when you play them. It's not just who plays you it's when they play you. Since the break we have not played teams at advantageous times, both regarding them and regarding us. Angels were hot, Yankees were hot, Pirates were hot, Blue Jays are hot. During that time, we are not. I'm not going to say anything predictive about tonight but I do hope things turn around soon.
  9. That's a very optimistic projection.
  10. I'd still rather have the nickel. It doesn't happen often, but every now and then a low-level prospect acquired in such a trade can blossom. And I think that by the time the Aug 31 waiver deadline rolls around the Twins will find that they won't need him for September and he'll be traded.
  11. I didn't see the game but I was listening on the radio. When the count hit 3-0 to Cruz I was thinking, throw a slider and he will take it, even if it's in the middle of the zone. So I think it was pitch selection more than anything.
  12. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by The takeaway from this is as follows: Here's how the lineup spots rank in the importance of avoiding outs: #1, #4, #2, #5, #3, #6, #7, #8, #9 This would mean your #3 hitter should be the player most teams now probably put at #5 or #6. I have no idea if any manager or coach has ever put this to extended use but it would be an interesting experiment. I'm surprised the stat-heads here haven't investigated and reported on this. Or maybe they have somewhere in the archives. To address Chief's thought, of course any team would like a 2009 Joe Mauer or a 2006 Justin Morneau in an important spot in the batting order, whatever spot that happens to be. But pitching is now and ever shall be the most important aspect of the game. The best pitchers can shut down the best hitters. The 2006 Twins went 69-33 over their last 102 games. The main reasons: Santana won the Cy Young even though he was our #2 starter for much of that stretch and the bullpen was a brick wall.
  13. Doubt it. The outfield wasn't very deep on account of who was batting. Another faux pas by McClendon not having his infield and pitcher keep Rosario closer to 2nd.
  14. Dicknjack mentioned it several times, that it's considered a huge managerial no-no to intentionally walk the winning run. McClendon has some splainin to do!
  15. Didn't vote. Haven't read any other comments. It may be five years or more before we know whether it was a good trade or not. That said, I wouldn't have made this trade. I probably wouldn't have made any trade. I don't think this trade will have much effect on whether we qualify for the postseason or not and it doesn't matter much to me whether we qualifiy for the postseason or not. I'd rather have held on to the prospects.
  16. Toughie, but if the green spot at the center is a MLB ballpark I'd have to say it's Wrigley Field, which of course means the city is Chicago.
  17. You are confusing parity with mediocrity. The AL has a winning record in interleague play; based on that I'd infer that it is the superior league. (And of course there's also that highly significant ASG win. *sarcasm*)
  18. Dude is only 21 years old. You probably won't have to wait too much longer, but even if it's a couple years I have a feeling the young man will be in the majors for a long time.
  19. This is what I picture as well. Buxton plays center when he's in the lineup. Hicks plays right when he and Buxton are both in the lineup; he plays center when Buxton is not. Rosario plays right when Buxton or Hicks is not in the lineup; he plays left when the other two are both in the lineup. Arcia plays left when one of the other three is not in the lineup and DH otherwise. Sano covers DH on the days when Arcia is in left; he plays third base otherwise. (That's a loaded sentence, isn't it?)
  20. I'd rate Hicks way higher defensively as a right fielder than anybody else who would play that position. I think he's the everyday right fielder next year. Rosario and Arcia should cover left field. They would also play right on Hicks' and Buxton's days off and also DH.
  21. Regarding Hicks' poor showings in 2013 and 2014: While he happened to be very, very not ready for the majors any player will struggle when asked to try to do something he's not ready for. In his case you can blame the Phillies. When Ryan traded Span after the 2012 season I'm sure his plan was to have Revere be the placeholder in center field until Hicks and/or Buxton could take over. But then the Phillies offered not one but two starting pitchers for Revere. A GM almost never turns down another team's offer to overpay in a trade, so Hicks was prematurely promoted. My hunch is that Ryan and Gardenhire knew he wasn't ready and tried to make the best of it but, well, we all saw what happened. I'm just glad that there are so many indications that he's blossoming into a true major leaguer. Glad for him, glad for the Twins but especially glad for me as a Twins fan.
  22. Pat Tabler. And I remember that night.
