  1. I missed a game? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evi0B_3mlek Nobody told me we had a meeting!
  2. I imagine that someone somewhere has tried to quantify how much it costs to scout, develop and pay a player over the course of his career. It would be interesting to see the breakdown for a borderline major leaguer (someone like Matt Tolbert) compared to a journeyman (someone like Luis Castillo) compared to a major star (someone like Joe Mauer).
  3. For a number of days I've been expecting the several threads discussing this topic to be merged into one. Of course, that might require TD to move to a new server...
  4. Wow, he writes really well considering English is not his native language. Being serious, I wonder how many members of the Yankees public relations and legal departments were involved in crafting that statement.
  5. The great philosopher Red Green put it this way (or very close to this way): If you're not having fun but your wife is, you're still having way more fun than if you're having fun and your wife isn't.
  6. This is certainly not an important matter but thought it may be of interest to some. This is an AP article I lifted from the STrib web site. SARASOTA, Fla. — Bye-bye, Oriole pie. Over the last several years, the Baltimore Orioles often celebrated victories with center fielder Adam Jones smashing a pie in the hero's face. Among the teammates he tagged, in fact, was Felix Pie. Now, the team has decided to end the practice for safety reasons. The ritual became so ingrained that Jones arranged with a local bakery to furnish the pies. Not all players were fond of Jones' antics, which generally came when an Orioles player was being interviewed on television. Jones tweeted the news on Saturday. "It's no one's fault. It's just about safety. At the end of the day it can be dangerous so we're being smart," Jones wrote. Baltimore players will try and come up with a less hazardous celebration.
  7. Ha. Interesting way to look at it. I'd bet on Garza to take the title. Actually I wouldn't bet on it. If one of them is put into involuntary retirement how would you factor that in?
  8. I agree that this is the almost certainly the case. My guess is that TR never put out feelers because he knew that the market would be unfavorable. Even though it was widely speculated that Plouffe could be traded there was no reason to tip his hand in any way unless he thought a good deal could be struck.
  9. I just now decided to catch up on this thread, so I apologize for being a bit out of sync. My comment on this is that at that juncture the Twins were desperate. Everyone knew they were not going to contend for the postseason. No elite FA would have signed with them. They needed someone/anyone who had a track record of eating innings. Even looking back, I think the Nolasco signing made sense based on what we knew at that time. Sometimes things work out well and sometimes they don't.
  10. If we see them in the pen I hope it's because the other starters are all performing well, allowing us the flexibility of putting them there.
  11. I think we're doing all this because we were unable to trade Plouffe for what we all (including TR) think he's worth. As has been said before it's an unfortunate situation of a buyer's market for third basemen.
  12. Geez, I feel bad interrupting a celebration like that.
  13. Speaking of which, I noticed that LaTroy Hawkins is in camp as an instructor. I just hope he's instructing based on the 2002-2003 LaTroy Hawkins and not the 1995-2001 LaTroy Hawkins.
  14. Sweeney, Mastroianni and Benson were signed to keep Rochester competitive and for short-term and/or emergency fill-in at the major league level.
  15. I like the game played that way too. But as I mentioned, according to the rule I posted above if the runner has been forced out it's not his right to interfere with the fielder in any way. I can see this inconsistency in the rules leading to disputations.
  16. It's easy to forget that you can't just make a favorable trade whenever you want. You have to get another GM to agree, and that simply doesn't happen all that often.
  17. Bunt 'em where they ain't!
  18. Hal McRae was not highly respected by many. I wish I could find the picture of him sliding into Glenn Borgmann in 1977. He came in fast and planted his right foot squarely on Borgmann's left knee. I thought it was obvious from the picture that he was intending to injure.

  20. How much easier does "easier" have to get before it becomes "far easier"?
  21. In addition to the decrease in innings pitched per start scoring has dropped significantly with the passing of the steroid era. Both of those trends make bullpens more important now than they've ever been. If those trends continue there may come a time when you are correct, but I don't think we're there yet.
  22. Maybe I'm just being a simpleton. Section 7.09 of the rules covers interference. Here's rule 7.09(d): "It is interference when any batter or runner who has just been put out hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate." From the moment the runner approaching second base on a potential double play is out he can not hinder or impede the defensive player. At all. This means no take-out slide. Can't this long-existing rule simply be enforced?
  23. Just like poker. You don't have to show your hand unless you need to prove yours is better than your opponent(s).
  24. The predictability thing may be true for players who are already at the major league level but it's way not true for prospects. The Twins are a team with a number of prospects who are nearing the point of being major league ready, but we don't know who'll turn out to be Joe Mauer and who'll turn out to be Chris Parmelee. If Park, Arcia and Kepler all play well the log jam gets worse, but if they all fail to click then we're suddenly short of players.
  25. Never have I agreed so much with a Dave W post. Did I wake up on the right planet this morning?
