Won't Rasmus require at least a 3-year deal at pretty good $? And I don't see anyone who considers themselves a CF willing to come here knowing they will be forced out by Buxton sooner than later.
I was just looking at the FA CF options to bridge to Buxton for 2015. There are...none. The only desirable one is Span and the Nats have an option they'll almost certainly exercise. It seems the best solution, absent Buxton being the Opening Day CF is to leave Santana there until he's ready. I know it's not optimal, but Eduardo Escobar in the lineup is quite preferable to the CF options IMO. The solution seems to be to bring in a moderately priced vet to play LF. The obvious option is Torii Hunter. He can still play a decent corner OF and is a decent bat. Being 39, he won't be outrageous salary-wise and 1 or 2 years will do it. If he struggles/gets hurt and Vargas/Pinto are swinging well, a Mauer move to the OF can be considered.
I think Molitor deserves a shot. But if you want to go 'outside' Mike Redmond would probably welcome a chance to join Girardi and Gonzalez in the 'escape Jeffrey Lauria' club.
I don't really care about the money. But Suzuki is playing way over his head offensively and isn't all he's made out to be defensively. And Pinto's not nearly as far away as he's portrayed, IMO. So yes, trade him. Pinto supported by Fyer/Hermann can make it through the rest of 2014. Then sign a veteran to back-up Pinto just like was done last year.
If he can truly bring a Max Kepler level prospect, you trade him regardless. If he can't, offer him 2/$10 million. If that's not enough, trade him regardless.
Except, who is starting on Saturday? Tues: Pino, Wed: Gibson, Thurs: Hughes, Friday: Corriea, Saturday??? I'm going to the game on Saturday. I would be nice if it were May or Meyer. Then again, that TBD fellow always kills the Twins.
Nobody should be untouchable, but you don't dig out of this hole by trading the best young, cheap, established players you have. If someone wants to offer something foolish, sure. Otherwise, you keep him.
So, we fired Bill Smith and hired his old boss. That's not working out, so we're going to fire him and hire his old boss? McPhail will always have '87 and '91, but he had a lot of issues since he left 20 years ago, and he's no spring chicken anymore. If we're actually going to clean house after 28 years, it can't be to bring back more of the old gang.
You're facing a pitcher who's owned you. If you win, it's going to be 1-0 or 2-1. You know that going in. You have to play for a run any time you have a chance. Failing to score runs off a pitcher you never score runs off is not shocking and does not excuse terrible management.
