  1. It's a good thought, but I don't see any of those options usurping the starting spot from Suzuki... And IMO that should be the top priority to find someone who can take the majority of starts so Suzuki's vesting option for 2017 doesn't happen.
  2. I wouldn't be concerned with giving up the #17 pick if Wieters is offered a QO. If the contract is within the 4/60 projection I'd bite the bullet and bring him on board.
  3. At this point it shouldn't matter about getting to the Little Caesar's Music City Papa John's Bowl Game broadcast live on ESPN 8 The Ocho. The number 1 goal now is to find a way to win the Floyd of Rosedale and the Axe...
  4. Very exciting names to end the list. With Nick Gordon I see he's listed as 6 foot, 160 lbs. I realize he's 20 and has some growing to do, but do the Twins want him to put some meat on those bones? Or does it not matter for a speedy SS like him?
  5. I'm with John and the majority of posters on this subject. He could be a fine addition as a bench bat, but I'd like to find someone else who can fit that role, along with having more position flexibility than just DH/1B. I'm not Justin Morneau nor his doctor, but personally I hope he hangs it up for good. With multiple concussions and 2 young children needing him at home, I would think the risk is greater than the reward these days when it comes to trying to play again.
  6. A couple of Kill quotes I'm reading on Twitter.... "My doctor told me, if I didn't move on with my life I may be a guy that don't think too good down the road. I want to be able to think." "When I walked off the practice field last night a part of me died." Sounds like he's been experiencing seizures again. Sad to read. He seems like a very like-able person. Hope he gets his health under control.
  7. Wow stunning news this morning. Jerry Kill retires effective immediately for health reasons. Tracy Claes will take over as interim head coach. Huge blow to the program.
  8. Torii received all of these standing ovations because he was a good baseball player. Nothing more than that. I doubt he has any cult following purely from his opinions off the field. It will be interesting to see how Torii will be viewed in a public light now that his playing days are behind him. The circumstances are different, but we've seen Curt Schilling go from a WS hero to a zero now that his opinions are the main focus...
  9. I was just about to link the Deadspin article that outlines this. I'll link this one too in regards to Mike's response.... http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2010/03/10/torii-hunter-black-dominican-players-are-imposters/
  10. I am too young to remember and appreciate the Kirby days, so Torii was the first impact player I have followed as a Twins fan. I remember watching Baseball Tonight, and most every night, Torii made a Web Gem play in CF. Whether it was robbing a HR, making a diving catch, or throwing someone out at home plate, he was a lot of fun to watch growing up. Not a lot of players can say they played at the highest level of their sport for 19 years and leave on their own terms. Congrats on a great career.
  11. If Curt Schilling can be employable as a baseball analyst, Torii has that gig in the bag....
  12. Agreed on your last point that the Price, Cueto, Zimmerman, pick your poison FA Ace option will never happen. Since the organization has a limited history of making their own ace as well, trading for one may be the best method. Before I talk about my point, since you feel the Twins are in rebuild mode, do you think they're going to be a playoff team next season? Or win fewer than 83 games? I may be skeptical but I'm not sure how the Twins can take the next step to being a 90+ win playoff team without taking a risk and acquiring someone better than the other 8 options on hand. It's going to be difficult to replicate the luck and timely hitting we saw last season...
  13. I also look at Rick Vaughn as a comparison. Dude is only 5'10" and threw 97 consistently...... Is that not the same??
  14. Make your own ace is the ideal option since their cost is minimal and years are controlled. There's very little evidence of that happening during the TR era other than Johan. Berrios is the next best chance, who has zero MLB experience. I don't think he's going to come up to the MLB and have a 2006 Liriano campaign next season, or even in 2017. So how are the Twins supposed to take this next step to being a 90+ win baseball club next season? Or are we back to building for 2 years from now?
  15. It's nice to look at it from a positive angle on keeping him down. I won't dive deep into the negative of Buxton being down in AAA that long. Let's just say if it's for negative reasons instead of positive, we have a much bigger issue to deal with.
  16. Let's hope TR ignores the service time dilemma and calls him up whenever he's deemed ready. IMO keeping Buxton down until mid July in order to push back his first FA year is not worth the cost.
  17. Barring a miracle win over the next 3 games against ranked opponents, I don't see the gophers winning more than 1 game the rest of the way.
  18. It's probably not the end all be all to be a high velocity guy in the rotation, because no pitcher can continually blow hitters away with nothing but gas for 7 innings. That's certainly where pitch location, pitch selection, and overall "stuff" comes into play. However, I'd like to see this study done with bullpens. I would think that's where velocity becomes a huge factor in their success. And that's still a huge problem that the Twins need to address.
  19. The Gophers found their identity again in the 2nd half, which was very nice to see. They had a true freshman starting his 1st game at C in Tyler Moore who seemed to set the tone for the rest of the O-line. Leidner fortunately didn't have to do much this game, but he did make 2 nice TD passes near the goal line. This is exactly what the team needed when you're going up against a team that's lost 17 of their last 18 Big 10 games.. I'm excited to see what they can do at home vs. Nebraska before the real test begins.... vs. #12 Michigan @ #1 Ohio State @ #17 Iowa
  20. Do you have any insight on why opponents were able get an .831 OPS on Gibson's pitches in the zone? Were they waiting for the sinker in a hitter's count? Just didn't have the "stuff" to fool opposing hitters?
  21. Agreed that is a big difference from past regimes is that the Gophers finally have a great defense. In all years prior, the defense was always a liability. I will say I hope that Kill can find the solution to the offensive woes before the defensive talent starts committing elsewhere..... As far as Leidner, the horse has been beaten enough already, and no new hot Gophers takes can be made about him. There hasn't been a lot of consistency with offensive starters either. One week it's Smith at RB, the next it's Brooks. The o-line is shaky at best. The West division title may be out of reach, but it could be worse... Come on down to Austin and you'll see what a real train wreck looks like.
  22. I would be on board with a Heyward signing as well. Only 26 years old with elite defense and very balanced approach at the plate. Not sure if the Twins can outbid the Yankees and Dodgers of the world to get him, but certainly would be a nice addition to this team.
  23. I remember hearing John talk about TD numerous times on KFAN, and the first day I joined, it was the over/under wins contest in March. Which, by the way, will that be opened up to see how far I was off?? I recall my initial thoughts about what to expect on the site, in a convenient picture below: http://chicago.barstoolsports.com/files/2014/10/nerds-3.jpg But boy was I wrong. I'm glad to have finally given the site a chance, and it's helped me immensely with keeping up with my favorite ball club since I moved out of the state. Thanks for all of the fun discussions, and giving me a platform for hosting a fake radio show
  24. Meanwhile, the number of HBP per game in the MLB was very consistent from about 1915 until 1995, ranging from 0.15-0.25. After 1995, the number skyrocketed to 0.3 and hasn't decreased below that level since. Are we maybe taking these silly unwritten rules too seriously? Source: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/bat.shtml EDIT:Ugh, I don't know why the link isn't working. If you're curious to know, go to baseball reference and you can see it in the MLB Batting Encyclopedia
