    Per your comment on building a rotation around mid-to-low strikeout contact arms, the only Twins SP to have a higher K/9 rate than Zimmerman is Duffey on a SSS. So our staff is more "threatening" than the Tigers with Zimmerman, Sanchez, Norris, Verlander?

    I'm a little surprised that Claeys broke up the staff immediately when Kill left, after spending more than 15 years together. I hope he can find an offensive coach that can develop Croft and he can take over full-time at QB next year. He also really played the injury card this season, which is one of the oldest cliches in the book. Every single college team goes through injuries, and ends up playing kids that weren't expected to contribute. Just call it like it was, a failed season. Going into next year, I'm very intrigued with Brooks and Smith as the backfield tandem. The team will only go as far as the QB takes them, and I'm tired of Liedner.

    The way the bullpen is currently set up has potential, but it's still a little too risky for my taste. It's fine to have a role open for one of the young guys to step into. It's another thing to count on multiple young guys to come up and produce right away. I agree with Leviathan that the Twins need to make a significant investment in another arm. Then I can see this bullpen making big strides for next season.

    I wish Pinto and Achter well in their future. From the Twins perspective, both are not going to be huge losses.

    I'm with you on both Sipp and Lowe. Offer them both 2 year contracts and fill the rest with minor league contracts to see which RP rises to the occasion.

    I agree with Seth that signing relievers to 3 year contracts is not something I'd like to do. However, there needs to be some help brought in outside of the organization. Tony Sipp would be a guy I'd like the Twins to target as the LH out of the pen. I'd also like to find a way to acquire Storen like diehard mentioned before. That would give the Twins 3 great options for the 7-8-9 innings, and all 3 have closing experience in case if Perkins falters again. If some of the young guys get hot, then great, they can be rotated into the pen when they're ready. If we're coming into the season relying on Tonkin, Achter, or Darnell to step up, it's going to be another long season of a shaky at best bullpen.

    All of those players could be had for a 1 year deal to rebuild their value. Once Buxton and Kepler are ready, they'll be on the team. I don't see the harm in targeting one of those guys to play until our crop is ready, and they take a back seat as the 4th OF

    I'd much rather see the Angels get shut out in order to prevent having to trade Plouffe to an AL Central team.

    I have no issue with the trade. On the surface it looks like a pretty even up deal to swap for positions of need. I mentioned this in the elongated Hicks trade thread... IMO it's too early to tell if Hicks truly turned a corner at the plate. Would I have liked another year to find out? Yes. If he didn't turn the corner, would the Twins receive this sort of return in a trade next year? Probably not. The Twins gave him ample opportunities to earn his keep in the majors, and really they got one hot month from him. Now I'm over him, and moved on to JR Murphy.

    I guess crazier things have happened in college football but that's a bold prediction to pick Minnesota to win on Saturday... The spread on this game is lower than I thought (Iowa -11.5) It's not crazy to think Minnesota with the points could win you some money.

    Is it better to acquire a more proven bullpen arm through trade? Or is it a necessary evil to gamble on the FA arms and hope for the best?

    Won't know for sure, but I would assume there were discussions between AJ's agent and the Twins. It would be interesting to know who said "Thanks, but we're going to pass" first.

    Tracy Claeys was named FT Head Coach today, signing a 3 year contract through the end of the 2018 season. I'm happy they're continuing the course with this coaching staff, and look forward to seeing if he can recruit just as well as Jerry.

    For the Twins, gotta hope that Hick's recent turnaround was a mirage and not a trend. At least Murphy is young with some room to develop. I was dreaming of a Rosario-Buxton-Hicks OF, but now I'll have to start dreaming of a Rosario-Buxton-Kepler OF instead!

    Awesome. Let's find Plouffe a new home so the Sano show at 3B can begin!

    I'm with you 100% Dinger. Plouffe's numbers have been broken down on other threads, and he is the definition of middle of the road 3B. The writing has been on the wall since July when Sano came up and dominated that Plouffe is expendable. Now we're seeing some resistance with trading him.. I don't get it.

    Now that the Twins won the bid to negotiate with Park, I think the Plouffe for Lind idea is dead. I would be excited for the Atlanta Braves or San Diego Dad's proposals. The White Sox for all I know could be the best proposal, but I'd prefer not to deal Plouffe to a division rival.

    There's 2 people that come to mind... Denny Hocking is 45 years old these days, but I'm willing to give him a shot on a 1 year deal. The Twins also need someone who can bunt, so Nick Punto may be a dark horse.

    And there's hundreds if not thousands of other players drafted in the teens or later who never pan out to be MLB players.. People would complain about that too if we remembered that the person was drafted in the 1st round. If anything your argument shows that it doesn't matter where these players are drafted. The whole process is a gamble. Giving up the #17 pick IMO shouldn't hold us back from making this deal. If the money and number of years holds them back from Wieters, I'm more understanding of that. I don't agree with it, but can respect the decision.

    I think Gardy will be hired as a manager again. The league seems to be cyclical when it comes to their hiring process. The latest and greatest now is to hire that former player/young gun with no managerial experience. It first worked in St. Louis with Mike Matheny, and now everyone wants to jump on that bandwagon. Once there's enough failures out there, or if another team goes back to the recycling bin of former managers and sees success, teams will go back to the old way.
